Since 1999 the Basel Institute HyperWerk lives in liberty, with fresh ideas and
great collaborators. Work takes place in a baroque villa in the heart of the
old town, and people feel in paradise…
.. but as life goes, in summer '14 all this freedom will move to a centralized
campus...
HyperWerk creates an activist design
movement!
Once upon a time...
we act now since efforts of
campus creation and centralization seem
to become the problem instead of the solution
for many universities confronted with postindustrial
challenges.

in mai 2013 motoco had its happy Opening days with a makershop.
in stark contrast to the rainy springtime these were three great days.
We talked and had a lot of projects and plans, and our gourmet group "gastronauts" was cooking.
and with this beautiful beginning we realized that our dream Motoco would become a great success!
and we ever so happy.

In thé background some of the fabulous sushi created by the gastronauts may be seen. This group is fascinated by gourmet culture.
by the way: one of the first
aims of motoco will be setting up its own
regular food supply.
For me and for many others makershop had a positive effect. to
come together and to make your statement, this
finds an echo.

in 2010 three students from HyperWerk decided to create a nomadic lab. They
were fascinated by the idea of creative collaboration between the many european design cultures. Here is this formidable team at the design show
Eunique in Karlsruhe, where they presented results from their expedition.
in autumn 2010 the students had announced their project at an american conference on creative swarms.
And in autumn 2011 they hosted this conference in BAsel and reported on their trip.
Here the tryplex nomadic lab for inflatables, visits

collaboration indeed!

e
the purpose of motoco?
The association with its not-
for-profit character wants to
provide an open lab on post-
industrial society, with a focus
on education, ecology,
economy, exchange and
expression. Typical for motoco
are the dialogue with all
actors, the vital need for
cooperation and flexible
reactions.
This is not just about the transformation of a site – this is an exemplary behaviour to cultivate.Because of a dense net of european safety regulations on buildings, creative workers run the risk to lose their workspaces together with their best expressive resources.
state of the project
since autumn 2012 motoco is installed in the former textile works of DMC. It all began in an industrial workshop of around 2000m2. This is
based on the ground floor of a factory building of around 10000m2, that motoco plans to lease and transform minimally
during the coming years. In the long run the association proposes to
extend its activities towards other buildings on the site.
WorksPartners from education and economy are involved in all motoco-projects.
Together we plan to create pilot workshops, cultural studies, festivals, large wood stoves from earth
and bricks, bamboo plantations and open
air theaters.
Approachin collaboration with the town of Mulhouse and its
urban development unit (SERM) such a transformation may be
realized within the rules and still become an aesthetic and economic
success.motoco wants to establish a place
and framework for collective experimentation. associations,
professional schools and institutes for architecture, economy, ecology and event
management shall be involved.
After this nomadic exhibition Motoco began to be fascinated by the world of real estate ! 9
on the DMC, The Serm owns a complex of three buildings
around a central pond. This set of rare beauty seems perfect
for the creation of ideas. During the next months motoco wants to
establish enough confidence for proposals for this set. workshops, studios, studies, start-ups and public areas
(fablab, cafeteria, shops, parks) are
great options.
The materials for the renovation and the
leasing of construction equipment will be funded by
the owner, while much of the work will be done on a
voluntary basis by the project partners as well as through the
participation of professional schools and projects for social inclusion. Through
such generous cooperation, the financial conditions
become affordable and predictable.
but the future needs more than space - there is also a need of
life, content, actions, and goals. Motoco also starts
with this question - how to live in the post-industrial society,
how to invent and design it?
After this nomadic exhibition Motoco became fascinated by the world of real estate !

Based on a large collaborative action
with the best universities in India (IIT Mumbai and NID
Bangalore) Motoco is looking into the high-
tech potential of bamboo for the construction of
robots.

HyperWerk
Motoco is experienced in the field of design. And so we decided to start looking around for innovative uses of bamboo as a sustainable material with rich associations.from bamboo we plan to make furniture, machinery, gardens, research projects, and intercultural exchange.
and already the adventurous saga of motoco has begun, with
great enthusiasm indeed!

So we thought, why not return to the sources of the bamboo
culture and make the trip to India, learn from the experts?

in the Dharavi slum in Mumbai live two million people. they produce and recycle an enormous amount of things under very very tough conditions.
A major goal of the next round of Motoco is to create propo-sals for alternative production pro-cesses. They should offer creative combi-nations between the great crafts and impressive techno-logies of India. Motoco calls this mix:

Creating a laboratory on the design of social
transformation, this is the aim of the project carried
by the Association motoco, which was initiated by
Mischa Schaub. This innovative Swiss of 61 years
who started as a sculptor, industrial designer and
then director and professor at the Basel Institute for
Post-industrial Design HyperWerk, has been able to
group around his ideas very many partners from
institutions, from associations and from industry.
Translated from L'Alsace, Mai 25th 2013
Let imagination reign!motoco is a bit the spirit of Mai 68: less the
revolution and more the capital (available); the
will to transform society through imagination,
search for solutions by opening up to the
thoughts of all, bringing together competences,
concepts and means...
Fortunately, Motoco gained the support of the mayor of Mulhouse, who gave a beautiful speech at the opening ceremony of makershop.
one of the greatest qualities of open culture is that it functions peer to peer between the students. This costs less and works
better ...
The motoco proposition for the creation
of the OpenMaster course of studies offers such
attractions:
european multilingual (HGK Basel & HEAR France)
a shameless mix of art and design
individual and clustered lab spaces in dmc
low level finances, high level of freedom (including
entrepreneurial action)
no classic teaching, but dedicated coaching
permanent documentation and external supervision of the process
strong on self-organization (the whole school as a huge
experimental setup)
access to the shared fablab of motoco
start in september 2014
Keyword of the project: "Open Culture". "Think of an
economically active enterprise without a financial
purpose – we act within capitalism, with this very
strong idea of open culture. This place belongs to
nobody, it belongs to everyone. The old system
disappears, we must find alternative approaches!"
explains Mischa Schaub. "We are at the beginning of
the adventure of motoco, this magic moment, this is
truly exiting!" he announces enthusiastically. "What
can you do if you have no money? We have begun with
3000 Swiss francs, and so we have been forced to find
our partners…".Translated from L"Alsace" 25.5.13
But such open attitude needs an open environment to succeed...
To take advantage of the open culture and also for its support, Motoco plans to offer an OpenMaster course of studies. These will use the enormous potential of the DMC situation, where a dense gathering of experts, artists and ideas will create an ultra creative climate.
peer to peer!

Here is the Building 75 of motoco.
But the future
will be better!
Life at motoco will be
beautiful: a restaurant, a fablab, many studios and
entreprises, a pond, a parc!
In the Best times of DMC 9000 people worked on this site of 65 Hectars.
motoco is half an hour
away from Basel, and five minutes
from the Highway.
An open campus must be accessible and be open enough to be able to enlarge into a future open space!
motoco says that
Mulhouse will be the core of the
creative industries of our three
regions
18
enthuses Mischa Schaub in front of the cold and deserted huge building 75. With the association motoco (= more to come) and a lot of institutional support (including the city of Mulhouse and Alsace CCI), Mischa Schaub wants to write the first pages of the creative economy. This economic development is based on cultural entrepreneur-ship. It will integrate activities related to the green economy, event services, catering and para-hotel activities.
"I live here through magical
moments, such times are truly exiting. The coming developments
will surprise us, we will see here social, technological,
creative innovation", .
From this lovely old industrial pond the future of DMC will RISE: Motoco!
translated from L'alsace 25.6.13Making businesses competitive
This creative economy should be born in Mulhouse,
on the former site of DMC, a treasure of the
industrial and textile age in Alsace. The idea has
immediately attracted the mayor, Jean Rottner, who
met Mischa Schaub in the context of IBA Basel
2020, a work of cross-border cooperation in which
the redevelopment area project of DMC as well as
the motoco project have been registered.
"Mischa Schaub proposed to us a project based
on design, as a kind of future for the city," said
the Mayor back from a study tour in Canada, a
country advanced in social innovation and
technology. Mulhouse must also find its place,
amplify this movement. Push the walls, invert our
thinking methods for Mulhouse, so that it
becomes a city that dares."
The city of Mulhouse liked the project, as does
also the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of
Alsace which has been very supportive. "Art and
product design aim to make businesses more
competitive", says Nathalie Rolling from the CCI.translated from l'Alsace 25.6.13

Mulhouse Area DMC,
Building 75: The location of the creative economyThis project does not
fit into any box. For its
main promoter and facilitator Mischa Schaub, artist, teacher,
designer and visionary,
the building 75 in the
DMC area should become the place for
many kinds of reinvention, innovation in
all its forms.
Action takes off in July
The motoco association will therefore sign a lease for the building
No. 75 until 2026. By July, it will settle on the premises. "Without
money, but in return we are given a whole lot of freedom",
explains Mischa Schaub. I want to address young people who
have ideas and can be attracted to join our nursery. "
To this creative happening will be invited associations, training
institutions, vocational colleges, schools of architecture,
economics, trade and cultural management. The idea of open
culture should appeal to young people. Mischa Schaub promised
them a home "classless, casteless" but in solidarity.
translated from L'alsace, 25.6.13
But such a great plan needs a neat
environment ...20
Motoco as a laboratory for sustainability seeks to understand the potential of alternative materials for design in the context of education.
A proper analysis of the ground is a precondition of success.
This bamboo lamp has an
ingenious mechanism to
accommodate with a hundred
scales many lighting needs.
The plan is to create a bamboo
plantation and garden of
1200m2 on the old parking,
between building 75 and the
pond.
this Variation of bamboo can
survive at minus 30 degrees,
and they can reach a height of
17 meters within five years.
… And motoco will create a garden for research, work and fun!
21
These students from India visited HyperWerk to develop a plan for an expedition through the crafts in many slums and villages. This trip of Motoco will be dedicated to finding sustainable and creative combinations of robotics with traditional village crafts.
We are members of a team that will make
a tour to research indian crafts in
November 2013. Our route will take us
from Bangalore to Mumbai to New Delhi!
What an educational adventure!
we go to India to gain knowledge about sustainable living under extreme conditions. Also we plan to discuss alternative uses of hightech.
on the next page follows the manifest behind our movement!

Motoco is looking for
creative exchange systems that are
based on the conviction that only our
differences motivate us for exchange.
Motoco offers its participating Schools the chance to think about the decentralized campus - this is As logical as it seems ironic, after so much effort went into centralizing academies …
and already media productions are filmed in the motoco space!
26
Media students from Hochschule Offenburg
regularly create superb documentations of most
events of Motoco. And thanks to their great
Prof. Sabine Hirtes this school is also strongly
involved throughout the whole project.
In February 2013 the media
students from offenburg

they created an expressive

In a park in Barcelona are benches
created by the architect antonio gaudi. They were
covered with mosaics made from broken tiles...
… and Motoco will create in Mulhouse a

Idea: a stove with heated seats for 20
people. The goal is to become able to
receive groups in our spaces that are too
large to be fully heated. And to have a
regional exchange between the young
people who actually build this stove
together.
Questions: Will our concept of
sustainable heating within large industrial

for pleasant exchange? And how could we
use this project to create a vision for

the context of post-industrial

The opening of "Architecture Days" takes place
at DMC. Especially Motoco and the DMC project
will be shown in the context of the traveling
exhibition IBA Basel 2020.On that occasion the Creative Village project
will be presented to the general public for the
first time - if possible in the form of
prototypes and mockups in full scale.
how could the creative fire of Motoco vitalize DMC?
And how could it become reality in 10 months?
And how could a vivid DMC help Motoco?
Let's dare and solve all of this together!
30
In Bangalore motoco has
found the association Jaaga as
a partner. Jaaga has created a
very attractive temporary
building for his cultural
center from pallet storage
racks.
for the architecture days in
september 2013 motoco will develop a prototype adapted to the conditions of
the situation at DMC
Planned is a workshop with
Freeman Murray, the expert from
Jaaga. In July 2013 he will
help us to build prototypes for
work and rest based on the
concept of flexible
structures within a large
house.
So let the action begin!
As Mulhouse is a bit colder than bangalore We will have to
find out what materials to use for isolating walls.
31
Motoco develops and delivers systems and locations for the construction of flexible entities inside a building - you could also call them living furniture.
They are based on pallet racks. They are extremely flexible and stable, inexpensive and they offer a functional medium for entrepreneurs and designers.
Their furniture declaration allows the use of the ground floor surfaces of the DMC plants without major transformation work.
Prototypes and plans for a first village of 50 users will be presented during the architecture days in September '13.
hopefully they will be as convincing as to give us enough push to construct the village till may 2014.
These photos were found stuck to
one of the many pillars in this space. They remain the only reminder how the space looked like during its industrial
use.
look here: Behind
this room there lies another one, and another one,
and another one...
In this rather limitless Hall of the building 63 motoco will install the creative village.
At present we wonder when the ground floor with its 8000 m2 of building 63 will be fully
occupied by the village .
32
HOUSE RULESTO SAFEGUARD THE unique and experimental character OF Motoco all spaces are rented by the association and they are sub-leased to tenants.
MOTOCO IS INTERESTED in ATTRACTing PEOPLE, NOT THINGS – USING OUR RADICALLY INEXPENSIVE SPACES AS CHEAP STORAGE SPACE IS NOT THE IDEA OF OUR COMMON EFFORT.
Financial transparency is important to us - the rent is calculated at their cost and minimum investment. The members CONTRIBUTE THEIR EFFORTS FOR free.
Tenants floors MAINTAIN AND TEMPORARILY USE the semi-public COMMON space on the ground floor. ITS 1400m2 ARE DEDICATED TO THE MOTOCO fablab, TO EXHIBITIONS AND CONFERENCES, AND TO LARGE-SCALE EXPERIMENTS.
CAN I ALSO LIVE THERE? ACCORDING TO THE LEASE WITH THE OWNER SERM TENANTS HAVE NO RIGHT TO LIVE PERMANENTLY IN BUILDING 75. THE ASSOCIATION IS HAPPY ABOUT THIS RESTRICTION, AS A PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE IS IN OUR COMMON INTEREST.
MOTOCO SEEKS TO FIND A SOLUTION FOR MINIMALIST ACCOMMODATION CLOSE BY, PLUS WE WILL TRY TO ESTABLISH A "CREATIVE VILLAGE" IN THE HALL 63. FIRST MODELS OF OUR prototypICAL "LIVING FURNITURE" WILL BE PRESENTED IN SEPTEMBER 2013.
an association with an attitude
It is the interim we are interested. ITS lightness, ITS OPEN LOGIC, ITS mood.
We love the process - we start fast and ADAPt AS we go.
we HAVE learned that the beginning is more magical than the end. This is why we ARE all HAPPY ABOUT the large wasteland DMC with all its open potential.
Motoco wants to offer SPACES FOR CREATIVE WORK at cheap prices - not only for economic reasons but as an aesthetic and ecological research INTO THE REDUCTION OF consumer attitude. Motoco believes that creativity thrives best in a supportive social climate and in An IMPROVISED environment.
