    What is the dierence?

    Any successul building project

starts with the designer as its

their job to take your wish list and

translate it into a reality. However

    deciding on the best designer

or your project can raise a ew

    questions.

    What does a Draughtsperson

    do?

    Traditionally, draughting sta, also

    known as architectural technicians,

    work behind the scenes, feshing

out design ideas to translate them

    into ull technical drawings. They

may be employed by an architectural

    practice or be sel-employed. For

a smaller project, such as a new

garage, a draughtsperson is a sure

bet and will be the low cost option

    in many situations.

    Architect vs Architectural

    Designer

There is a broad overlap in the skill

set and range o services they each

    provide.

    An Architect has usually gained

an architectural degree and will be

    registered with the New Zealand

    Registered Architects Board

(NZRAB). To practice as an architect

they must hold an annual practicing

    certicate issued by the NZRAB.

Many architects belong to the New

    Zealand Institute o Architects

    (NZIA).

    An Architectural Designer has

most likely (but not necessarily) also

studied at a tertiary institution. Manyarchitectural designers belong to

    Architectural Designers New Zealand

(ADNZ). With a wide range o skills

    and experience, an architectural

designer is a great choice or a new

    home or more complex renovation.

Simply put, the only thing an

    architectural designer cannot do is

    call themselves an architect.

It all depends on the scale and

    complexities o your project. The

important thing is to ask the rightquestions ensuring you nd the right

t or you and your project. Dont be

araid to ask your potential designer

what their qualications are, as it is

    conusing.

    planning

    colour paletteyour

Any renovation or building project is a daunting process lled with

decisions. And one o the most time-consuming and dicult is oten

in regards to selecting that perect colour palette.

You want your interior colour scheme to be a canvas onto which youcan hang artwork, display much loved possessions and o course live

with. Yet you dont want it to be boring. Colour, pattern and texture

will add vibrancy, personality and lie to the space.

    A good rule to remember is 60, 30, 10. 60% dominant colour, 30%

secondary colour and 10% nishes. A rule which will allow you to

    create plain areas o

    colour on which the eye

    can rest, while using

    patterns and texture to

    relieve the boredom.

    Most importantly, this

    rule will help create a

    balanced, rather than

    overwhelming space.

    Creating a mood-

    board o images and

inspiration will provide you with something tangible to take along

when meeting with your colour consultant, who will then be able to

assist you in drawing out base and accent colours. When meeting

with your colour consultant it is just as important to know what you

dont like, as much as what you do like. Collate ideas rom magazines

print pictures out rom the Internet, gather inspiration rom wherever

    and whatever you can!

Beore you go too ar down the track o selecting paint or wallpaper,

    it is critical to make

    a decision on your

    fooring material and

    colour. As this is the

    most expensive, and

    dicult, component o

    your colour scheme to

    change it is essentia

    you get it right rst

    you can then build your

    scheme rom there.

    selecting

    tradespersonthe right

Why The Right Tradesperson Is So Important

The construction team you choose to work with is going

to be instrumental in creating your home, and will help

make the process as enjoyable as possible. You need to

understand each other, be able to communicate well and

undamentally like one another, so it is important, and ok

to shop around and trust your instincts.

When the tenders come in, dont automatically choose the

cheapest. Use a number o criteria to decide, such as:

Price - i a tender is way above or below the others you

should question it. Some builders tender low on the initial

bid just to get the job, but theyll probably be orced to cut

corners, or rely on expensive variations along the way to

make the job pay. Dont orget you get what you pay or.

Examples o work - ask them i you can talk to

someone who has used them to build or renovate, and

look at examples o their work.

Qualifcations - nd out i they are qualied, whether

they are licensed to do the work, and whether they are

members o New Zealand Certied Builders Association

(CBANZ) or Registered Master Builders Federation

(RMBF).Finally, talk to each one and decide i you think you

can work with them on a daily basis. You need to be

comortable with them, be able to communicate clearly,

openly and honestly and be condent they are capable o

turning the designs into a high quality end result.

Cherrytrees Unique Wholesalemodel means everyone wins!!

Since 1996 Cherrytree has been saving its

members tens of thousands of dollars on

heir building and renovation projects and

on a massive range of everyday items.

The range is so huge that they now sell

over half a million products from over

2,000 household name brands. Its all

quality brands and its all sold at transparent

wholesale prices plus a small handling fee.

While many people join for a specific

project, most join for the savings on a huge

range of everyday items because these are

    bought again & again.

    The Wellington Club owners, Simon

Thomson & Tracey Lewis are passionate

about helping their club members to realise

heir dreams with the projects they embark

on. We all work hard for our money and we

should be able to buy great quality products

and brands to make our homes special

    - thats where a Cherrytree membership

works to the advantage of each member,

says Simon Thomson. The reason I love

Cherrytree so much is that everyone wins:

The suppliers, the members and Cherrytree

    and that is unique.

When buying in retail you have no idea how

much the retailer paid for the item so cannot

know if you are getting a good deal at

    Cherrytree we have absolute transparency.

To find out how over 20,000 Kiwi families

buy smarter, go to www.cherrytree.co.nz or

call 0800 Cherrytree and they will send you

Lets face it, renovating can cost a not-so-pretty penny and it

doesnt take much to amount to the upper end of thousands

when you start selecting fittings. So its refreshing to have

the likes of Millen Homeware with an impressive selection of

contemporary to classic bathroom and kitchen wares that are

    really well priced.

    in Wellington in 3 days.

including full shower, mixer and shower slider, toilet and vanity
