Program Overview

The intention of the College of Engineering’s digitally enhanced classrooms is to provide the same high quality learning experience to both the in-class and distance students, and to present them with all of their course materials in the most accurate and accessible formats currently available.

3

Professors use a tablet to deliver and annotate their material. Their notes stream live to the distance broadcast as well as to the in-class students on either projection screens or individual displays.

A series of cameras and microphones deliver the action of the classroom to a Mediasite recorder which converts the lecture into a rich-media format for our broadcasts. Each of our classrooms are also equipped with phone and video based teleconferencing allowing distance education students to see, hear, and interact as if you were in the classroom.

4

Viewing the Courses

The presentation playback window is divided into two main screens:

The video screen contains the main class video (1) and associated audio/video controls. The slide screen (2) displays the professor’s notes in synchronization with the video.

The Ask button (blue arrow) will enable you to post a question directly to the professor during a live presentation; if you are viewing the recorded presentation please e-mail questions to the instructor directly.

Each course presentation is available to view in two identical formats:

• Live Stream – Will allow you to view and interact with the class while it is occurring. This format does not save the presentation on your machine for future viewings. Use the ask button to send a message directly to your professor or use your classroom’s phone number to call in.

• Archived Download – Will allow you to view a class that has already been recorded. This format will save a copy of the presentation on your machine for future viewings.

5

Class Participation

The call-in numbers listed below correspond to most of our classrooms. When viewing the lecture live you are able to participate. When calling in your voice is broadcast to all in attendance via speakers in each classroom as well as to the recorded presentation. If calling please use a landline whenever possible and mute your PC speakers to avoid feedback and complications from the delay between the internet stream and phone sources.

When calling in to for a distance presentations find the appropriate number for the room the class is held in, then ask the instructor to start your PowerPoint which you will have emailed to them prior to the presentation. The slides will be advanced for you remotely as you proceed over the phone. Only one person can call in at a time so be sure to hang up when finished.

For any room not listed GoToMeeting will be provided.

Class lecture videos are accessible in two different ways. The streaming format allows you to view a presentation live or post- recorded and is recommended for those with a faster internet connection, while archived classes can be downloaded and viewed at any time. You also have the ability to view all past recorded classes and notes by clicking on a title whose date has passed.

Below the descriptions for each class are the Links (blue arrow) where you can download any notes associated with that course.

Shortly following the live presentation all sections of a lecture are archived in a self-extracting format available for download. The archived lectures can be streamed by clicking on the title or by downloading to your machine. The notes and their annotations are stored in zip folders, to access them click on Links then the Notes link that appears and save or open the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Am I required to watch the class as it streams live?

• No. Although you are able to watch a live presentation, one of the benefits of enrolling as a distance education student is that you are able to attend class according to your schedule. This can be done by viewing an archived streaming presentation or downloading an archived presentation at your convenience. However, most classes have weekly assignments therefore you are required to view each lecture during the week it is conducted.

Q I cannot logon to Blackboard.

• Your Blackboard username and password are the same as your Villanova e-mail. If this does not work, please contact the UNIT helpdesk at (610) 519-7777.

Q When I open a presentation I can watch the slides but am unable to view the video.

• Ensure that Windows Media Player 9 or higher is installed on your

machine.

• If you are attempting to view the lecture from your place of business you may be unable to view the live stream as a result of a firewall. If this is the case, download the archived file to your local machine.

• Ensure that the most recent version of your browser is installed

• Disable your pop-up blocker

• If none of these suggestions help, please contact the daytime or

evening coordinator

17

Q I have saved the notes however I cannot open the files.

• Ensure that Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your machine.

• When accessing the notes link right click and choose save as. This will enable you to save them to a specified location. If you left click the notes will only open in a temporary file and may not open properly.
