Photojournalist Carl Juste’s Newest Exhibit “E-KleK-TiK” Signifies

Miami – An Eclectic Work of People, Ideas, and Culture”

Miami, FL…April 23, 2013…Miami Herald staff photographer and ACND Prep alumnus, Carl Juste curates and

presents, “E-KleK-TiK” – An IPC Visual Lab photography exhibit featuring about 80 works by professional

photojournalists, instructors at the Lab, and their students. Juste will speak and introduce the concept of the

exhibit at the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 6 to 10 pm. Miami based artist, OneWay will

be DJ. ACND Gallery of Art at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep, 4949 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33137, (305)

751-8367, news@acnd.net, www.acnd.net. The exhibit is free and runs through May 31st.

“Miami is an eclectic work of people, of ideas, of culture. Why don’t I try to represent that,” questioned Juste.

“So, I pulled several examples from my collective Havana Haiti and also asked some of my instructors from the

IPC Visual Lab to submit some work and I felt it was important to have my students work too. When you see this

exhibit you feel like you are viewing a collection of the universal aesthetic and that was the aim behind curating

this show.”

Also exhibiting work are professional photojournalists C.W. Griffin (Miami Herald), Charles Trainor (Miami

Herald), Andrew Kaufman. And, their advanced lab students: Jenny Babot Romney, Rubyann Smith Hernandez,

Nanci Thomas, Zeus Shama, Jennifer Kay, and Ethan Britton.

The IPC student works will face the instructors work. “It gives them a visual connection of where they are and

where they can be,” explains Juste. In speaking about the work of Lab student Jennifer Kay who is by profession

an Associate Press writer he comments, “You can see her progression. She attempts and succeeds in grasping

some of the elements of the visual language.”

About the Photographers:

Under threat of persecution, Haitian-born Carl Phillipe Juste (ACND alumnus 1981), fled with his family from

Haiti in 1965. Settling in Miami’s Haitian community, Juste flourished academically and won a scholarship to the

University of Miami. Although he intended to be an engineer, he could not ignore the photographic inner voice

that had spoken to him since childhood. Responding to a clear relationship he shared with the visual world, Carl

vigorously pursued photojournalism and since 1991, has served his community through his work at the Miami

Herald. He has received numerous awards for his work from Picture of the Year, Pulitzer Prize, Society for News

Design, Best of Photojournalism, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. Juste is founder of both the IPC

Visual Lab and Iris Photo Collective.

C.W. Griffin is also a Miami Herald staff photographer and professional photographer for over 25 years. His and

Juste’s coverage of the Haiti earthquake aftermath has been recognized both locally and internationally.

Charles Trainor Jr is a Miami Herald staff photographer covering the Miami Heat and other professional college

sports. Last year, his work was exhibited at the “I Witness” exhibit at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Miami –

curated by Steinbaum and co-curated by Juste.

Andrew Kaufman has been a professional photographer for over 20 years. His work has been featured

prominently in major print publications including: Outdoor Life, Golf Digest, Index, Time, Newsweek, Newsweek

Japan, Bloomberg, Fortune, Forbes, Business Week, and National Geographic Adventure. He has also published

books and exhibited at various shows in Miami, Germany, Panama, and New York.

About IPC Visual Lab:

IPC Visual Lab provides a 10-week photojournalism program that is a total immersion experience designed to

provide instruction and hands-on training in the art of digital photography. Students are encouraged to be

creative, but are also taught to think of each project as a concise statement with artistic, documentary, and/or

journalistic intent. Students learn concepts that range in scope from beginner theory on the technical control of

your camera settings to advanced topics in post-production and composition.

About the ACND Gallery:

The ACND Gallery of Art (established in 2007) is offered as an expression of solidarity with its neighbors in the

historic Buena Vista, Brentwood and Little Haiti sections of the upper east side of Miami as well as the

developing areas of the Design District, Wynwood Arts District, and the Downtown Arts and Entertainment

District. Each exhibit is designed to provide an opportunity for educational enrichment through the promotion

of thought and discussion. The ACND Gallery also exhibits a permanent collection of Juste’s work including

“Havana Haiti.” This body of work has been recently published as a book and the exhibit travels worldwide. For
