DATE: 1857
BASIC UNIT: F
KNOWN LOCATIONS: Willet's Point. New York HarborGovernors Island, New York Harbor
COMMENTS: This may be the first standardized design. Itwas first built at Governors Island in 1857 andlater, in 1866. at Willet's Point (Ft. Totten).Plans exist at the National Archives of thebuilding at Governors Island and though thedrawings do not match this one, they are of thesame design. A previous study for GovernorsIsland (Historic Structures Inventory. GovernorsTsland, New York. 1983. Historic American Build-ings Survey, unpublished), allowed access to thebuilding there; it matches the plans for thebuilding at Willet's Point. The drawing fromWillet's Point is marked with the EngineerDepartment stamp.

COMMENTS: Drawing titled "Designs for Officers Quarters, asa Standard for use in the Great Plains andMountains". The date, 1866 is inconclusive. An1867 magazine article from the Army and NavyJournal address the condition of barracks andquarters and in several paragraphs references the1866 Annual Report of the Secretary of War andmentions the Plains and measures that wererecently taken to provide suitable housing forthe troops on the Plains. This emphasis on thePlains leads the author to conjecture that thesedesigns plus OQ-7 are those measures.
