A fact of some interest in connec-tion with the explosion at Atwerpis that an instantaneous photographof the gigantic column of solid-looki- ng
smoke which arose fromthe burnt gunpowder was secured, the photographer being a littlemore than a mile away. The col-umn had an approximate hight of3,937 feet, and the greatest' widthof its head was 1,739 feet Officersof the Belgian Engineers estimatethat some seventy nine tons of pow--
der, in addition to what was in thecartridges, must have exploded atonce, and the force exerted wassufficient to excavate a hole m theground about fifty yards long, fortywide and. six deep, removing some3G,000 cubic feet, or 1,900 tons, ofsolid earth. , No loss than ninety-fiv- e

The shooting of the HawaiianRifle Association was made undermany dilSculties. In the morningthe light was very poor, owing toheavy clouds; besides this the wind R.
vwas unfavorable, being stronger at alltimes than at others, making it al-
most impossible to judge its forceaccurately. It is the first shootmade at the new range, and, whilethe range h not fully finished, theassociation did all it could to makeit a success. Taking all in consider-ation it wast quite a success. Maythe next suoot be made under morefavorable weather. -
