INTRODUCTION
• Brian and Ean are both Junior Biological Engineering students and
are also both enrolled in Engineering Design 497B at The
Pennsylvania State University
• We both have a lot of interest in Solid Works as well as creating
and assembling model rockets as it has been something that we did
from a very young age
• Our future careers will involve both of us working with Solid
Works as well as doing analysis on parts that we have created, so
this is a great introduction to what we will be doing
post-graduation
DESIGN INTENT
• One of the most iconic and infamous cars of the 1980’s was the
DeLorean DMC- 12
• A featured car in the “Back to the Future” franchise, this car
was one of our favorites growing-up
• The car’s futuristic look and sleek design was the inspiration
behind our rocket’s body shape and size
• The Delorean is known for straight symmetrical lines and an
overall simple design
• The body of our rocket was a very basic shape much like the
Delorean’s. We wanted our rocket to have as aerodynamic of design
as possible so we wanted our rocket to have straight lines and a
very simple shape.
• An iconic aspect of the Delorean is the “gull-wing doors” and we
modeled our rockets wings after this design

ANALYSIS RESULT: OPEN ROCKET
• Open Rocket was used to determine the Center of Pressure on our
rocket
• The center of pressure was found to be below the calculated
center of mass, therefore a steady flight was expected
• Autodesk Flow Design should have been used to determine the drag
coefficient of this rocket, but due to technical difficulties, this
aspect was discarded.

DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS • As seen in this video on the
previous slide, our rocket launched with no problems • It also was
able to deploy its parachute and return to the ground unharmed
with
nothing damaged • The overall flight path of our rocket was very
straight and did not go off course • We did however have a taper on
our wings which should have allowed for our
rocket to spin during its flight, however our rocket did not spin.
This proved to be not much of an issue however and has not effect
as the rocket traveled through the air
• The design could have been improved with a lower weight fin
section. That would have both made the overall weight lower and
moved the center of gravity more towards the top for better
stability
• Also, we did have tight tolerances, so initially trying to get
the motor mount in was a problem and some sanding was involved to
make it fit properly
