Subject: Selling off B.C. resources

8/29/2005

Dear Sirs Regarding the sale of Terasen Gas to American ownership. As a proud British Columbian and a Senior I wish to protest this sale of our assets. I realise the B.C. Utilities Commission is supposed to regulate some of any proposed increases but am not very confident of their ability to control . Example: CRTC is supposed to regulate 'phone companies rate increases but has no control over 'other' items such as long distance admin fees - which have increased well over 100% in last 12-18 months. Would Utilities Commission do any better!!!!!! Some years ago the B.C. Government urged us to use natural gas - we had abundant supplies and cost was reasonable. Like many British Coumbians I thought BC Gas was a Crown Corporation (which it should be when you have a monopoly on supply) and am now committed to gas for heat/hot water and cooking - as a pensioner I am VERY nervous about this sale. I would like to see an immediate Public Inquiry into this sale - is it in the interest of the general public??????? Audrey & Terry Wells

August 27, 2005 BC Utilities Commission Secretary Box 250, 6th Floor – 900 Howe Street Vancouver, B.C. V6Z 2N3 [email protected] Dear Sir: I am writing in order to share my deepest concern regarding the sale of Terasen Inc. to Kinder Morgan Inc., which you will soon be asked to approve. Since the implementation of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, I have witnessed the increasing loss of control over the country’s resources and its infrastructures. From the elimination of the 25-year contingency reserve provision, to the implementation of the proportional sharing provision, most of Canada’s energy decisions have resulted in our country losing sovereignty over our resources. This sale will undoubtedly rob B.C. communities of the power to influence future energy decisions in the province. It will also reinforce the view that Canadians are, in effect, becoming tenants in their own land. I urge you to prevent this deal by refusing to ratify it until such time as an exhaustive evaluation of Canada’s energy situation is completed and provincial – and national – energy strategies are drafted and adopted. As the U.S. Administration is keen to highlight, control of energy resources will be the struggle of the future. Canada needs to start preparing for this struggle and defending infrastructures built and paid for by the Canadian public. Sincerely, Barbara Lambert

What are we thinking in allowing such a sale of our natural resources to the states. The price of gas in our province is already outragous and many families will soon be freezing in our cold winters if the price continues to rise. We need to keep BC Resourses BC or at very least Canadian owned. A sale such as is being proposed would in my opinion be a big mistake and may cost BC much more than could possilbly be gained. Think twice before allowing such a crazy move.

To Whom It May Concern at the BC Utilities Commission and the Investment Review Division of Industry Canada: As a British Columbian I am writing to express my opposition to your possible ratification of the deal to sell Vancouver based Terasen Inc. to Kinder Morgan Inc. of Texas. What the citizens of British Columbia and the Canadian public in general need at this time is not an announcement of a "done deal"; but an in depth evaluation of our own energy situation with a view to our own long term strategies at home and abroad. Approval of the sale at this time by the BCUC will simply frighten and distress British Columbians who fear that our government has acted as a handmaiden to the transfer of control of our oil and gas resources (including their transportation and distribution) to American interests. Already this summer in Kelowna in the restaurants, bars and at family summer vacation get-togethers there has been talk of the fear and apprehension that Canada could , in some ways, become like another Iraq.... whereby a nation has internal social conflict and loses its political sovereignty as it is manipulated and interfered with for its resources by the great American international bully. Even relatives of mine visiting here from Montreal commented that Mr. Dick Cheney recently visited Alberta to view the tar sands and wondered, "Now what is this REALLY all about!!" Haven't you guys learned anything from the 10 yr softwood lumber dispute? Canadian public opinion has been aroused and angered over what the US has done to us on that issue. So my advice to you is to proceed with care and caution ! ..................Sincerely, Charlene Jennejohn, Kelowna, BC.

Selling our resources to U.S. based companys is morally wrong. It decreases our ability to negotiate prices for the benefit of Canadians, lowers our standard of living and put political pressure on our elected representatives. More importantly, it is counter-productive and anti-economic. Jobs will be lost, profits will leave our country, and we will have no control over export when we need the resource for ourselves. Mr. Secretary, if you have any love of Canada, it's people, it's future and it's standing as a world power, I implore you to look deep into your soul and not allow this sale to happen. It can never benefit you, your family or the country in the long run. Guy Santucci A Proud Canadian!

To whom it may concern: *sigh* Here we go again. We get so much grief from U.S. unfairness in the marketplace that we don't need the selling out of our energy resources to them to add to it. We are already plenty vulnerable to not so tender mercies. If the federal government is at all serious about standing up to them, here is a prime place. Is the Paul Martin administration our government, or the vender selling Canada down the river? Stop the sale of Canadian resources and companies starting with Terasen. Hello, Could you please offer me information as to the possibility of American company Kinder Morgan developing a controlling interest in Terasen gas. I do hope that Terasen gas will continue to be not only the provider but the administrator of this natural resource for British Columbians at home, and that we certainly should not have to buy our gas back from the Americans that would be able to exercise free reign through pricing. Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response. Matthew Jaques.

Sirs: I cannot protest loudly enough about the sale of Terasen Gas to the Americans. Selling this resource...and then buying gas back at God knows what price, seems ludicrous to me. The recent actions taken by America with regards to Marc Emery, the Canadian property connected to the tunnel under the 49th, and the American Ambassador to Canada complaining that we need to stop our 'emotional tirades' is proof enough that Americans need to stay out of our country, our judiciary and our resources. I do not want to become a Can-american. Sincerely, Robert McLean

sir/madame;I have to express my (and others I'm sure) concern over the raises your allowing for companies that supply us with things like natural gas to heat our homes.I remember years ago when the big push was on to switch to NG.There was all kinds of incentives, free this and free that to get everyone to switch and most people did.Well now it's getting totally ridiculos most of us simply can't afford it anymore and are thinking about alternatives, one being going back to wood heat...this we don't need.Think of this for a moment if 30 % of Vancouver residents started burning wood, regardless of any law that says we can't,what would the city look like the pollution would be unbearable. The fault would be totally on your shoulders. There is an e-mail going around now about the high cost of fuel for our vehicles.there is something planned for Sept 1st.People are starting to fight back in any way they can..we have to do something !! Prices are out of control and it's hurting. The large oil companies and governments are gouging the hell out of us and banking billions,"you know it and we know it" We are sick and tired of all the phony excuses.Soooo for once in your life do the right thing, say no to the Texens they could probably do with a little less fat !!!
