I’m writing to you because there’s someone out there on the streets of Portland right now huddled in a doorway.

Shivering in the winter’s slicing cold … slowly fading from lack of food … bracing for the long night ahead.

And this pain, this desperation, this aching loneliness is happening at the Christmas Season — the time of love and caring!

When his relationship with his girlfriend and the mother of his child ended, Hunter sank into drug abuse to deaden the pain.

“I was hurt,” Hunter says. “I’d wake up sick, looking for my next high. I lost everything.” He hit bottom when he was arrested for possession. But thankfully, Hunter found us. He found the Mission.

With hard work, help, and hope, Hunter experienced a transformation from the inside out. “I’ve been able,” he says, “to really change my life.”

The best part is that Hunter’s little girl, his 6-year-old daughter, is back with him. “It’s a blessing,” he says. “I get to be a father.” And today, Hunter is the kind of loving father that he himself never had.

Now that’s a Christmas story. And that’s why your gift will mean so much.

A Christmas meal with the community at the Mission will reach people who are lost and bring them in from the cold. With love and encouragement, they’re renewed, becoming the best version of themselves.
