Ms. Kincaid will be reading from and commenting on both Balls, her latest book, and her forthcoming book set in a women's prison. Balls is a story set in the world of southern college football where the game rivals God, motherhood, and apple pie. The characters--all women whose lives revolve around the game's coaches and players-- reveal their misguided hopes and unfulfilled dreams. Ms. Kincaid's acquaintance with the world in which her characters live comes from firsthand experience, as both her ex- and her present husband are college football coaches. She attended Virginia Tech where, as a freshman, she was crowned homecoming queen. There she met the footban team's quarterback - an Alabama boy - married him, and dropped out of college at nineteen. Her husband's job as a coach moved the family to several states, including Alabama where for a time he had a position in the coaching staff at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. She later went back to college and received a BA from Athens (AL) State College in 1987 and an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Alabama in 1991.
