Dyslexia falls under the SLD category. Department of education supports the

use of the word dyslexia in all school documents including IEPs

KY has a HB69 that recognizes dyslexia as a form of SLD.

Core Content for instruction is the carefully sequenced teaching of the structure and use of sounds, syllables, words, sentences, and written discourse.” (Moats & Farrell, 2005)

Lesson Plan format includes a progression of structured, scientifically based, language activities.

Teachers should pay close attention to how they are going to involve different sensory systems to reinforce the learning in brief varied routines that motivate students and hold their attention.

Orton Gillingham is a multisensory method of teaching that is the foundation to all MSL programs.

Programs using OG

Barton: One on one 45-60 min. at least 2x a week.

Wilson: 60–90 minutes, 2-5 times/week in a 1:1 setting; or 45-90 minutes daily in a small group (up to 6 students) setting

Lindamood-Bell: Various programs including LIPS, Seeing Stars, visualizing/Verbalizing Small group, 2-5 times a week, 30-60 min.

What next?

Sometimes students will finally “get-it” but that does not mean they are cured!

They will always need extended time. Sometimes they need an extra intervention

to be the bridge between fluency and comprehension…VOCABULARY

Great Leaps Reading is a 6-10 min daily intervention (with easy data tracking included) to increase vocabulary to boost comprehension!
