In August 2009, CGP-KONECRANES delivered a 30 t EOT crane to ThyssenKrupp Electrical Steel in ISBERGUES (France). This crane replaces an old one and is used to unload steel coils from trucks or wagons and -to serve unwinding machines. It is equipped with a tong + DynAPilot, and controlled from a cabin with cameras. The PLC assists the driver in many tasks such as pre-positioning and when operating in restricted areas. In initial discussions, Thyssen explained that the runway in this workshop was old and the rail was not as well aligned as in standard requirements. The building has the correct span, but vertical

and horizontal alignments caused problems during the travelling movements of the old crane.

In fact the old crane always had strong contact between the rail and the wheels. This resulted inever increasing wear, so the wheel flanges were constantly being damaged.

DynATrak-R was included right from the start in the design of the new crane. Because it was our first implementation, Simo Hakkarainen from Finnishtechnical support was at the site for one working day for the commissioning, which was successful.

During our last visit in January 2010, we checked the wheels, and Mr Lannier, Thyssen Project Manager, said “In the past we were obliged to change the wheels every year and sometimes more often. Now, after six months of work there is no wear to the wheels, and your system is working well!”

ThyssenKrupp has ordered six cranes in the past five years. All the people in both our companies work very closely together, that is real Partner-ship.

DynATrak R hardwareTwo sensors measure wheel displacement from the middle of the rail, one at each end of the end truck. When the wheels are in the middle of the rail, the distance from the sensor to the rail should be 100 mm or more. The sensors are connected to an analogue input module in the PLC. SoftwareThe DynATrak R software consists of two PID-controllers. One PID controller keeps the wheels in the middle of the rail and the other controls the crane skew. The output from the PID controllers is added to the bridge speed references as a speed correction. Corrections to the bridge drives have opposite signs for fast response.
