Dear reader,Finally we have spring again, at least according to the calendar. In Sweden the winter has been long and cold, and as soon as the snow and ice are gone from the roads, construction companies will be very busy to get to work.

Big infrastructure projects have started in many parts of the world, not least in China, India and Brazil. Even so, when counting together the new construction projects worldwide, the major part of road work is still in the maintenance sector. It requires a lot of effort each year to keep existing road networks up to standard. Globally, a big portion of the total road construction work is maintenance of existing roads worldwide. This is especially true in more mature markets like Europe.

Spring-time also means exhibition time in many countries. On March 2, the largest exhibition in Europe this year, Samoter, opened in Verona. Dynapac had a strong presence at the exhibition, introducing the new Dynapac wheeled and tracked paver ranges, displaying the new small CC rollers, pneumatic roller CP274, as well as the impressive Compactasphalt module CM2500. The Compactasphalt equipment was shown courtesy of German road construction company Hermann Dallmann GmbH, who has purchased the module and intends to put it to work on larger road works during spring and summer.

Spring time –Time for road constructionAnother significant construction exhibition in 2011 was the Conexpo show in Las Vegas, USA, March 22- 26. Dynapac displayed the North American tracked and wheeled pavers introduced to the market last year, several soil and asphalt rollers as well as planers. There was also a Compactasphalt competence corner for this sustainable and cost efficient asphalt laying technology.

I hope you already know that we are dedicated to building a strong presence on the web. We are constantly improving the functionality of our web site in order to offer easy access to useful information. We also have, as one of a few suppliers, a very comprehensive web section for used equipment, where high value used equipment is offered to customers worldwide.

In this issue of Dynapac News you will learn about our people, new products, and many ongoing activities and projects within Dynapac and at our customers´. Paver show off in Germany

ALONGSIDE THE pavers on display in Crailsheim were compact planers PL350T and PL500TD, the CC1300 combi roller and the F5CS paver.

Before unveiling the pavers, General Manager Stephan Ketteler welcomed the visitors and gave them a brief introduction to the Atlas Copco Group. Following this, Thomas Hornfeldt, Vice President Capital Equipment and Thilo Ohlraun, Business Line Manager for road construction equipment, briefly presented the complete range of Dynapac´s road construction equipment.

A FORMER AIRCRAFT HANGAR WAS THE DRAMATIC SETTING FOR DYNAPAC´S SECOND PAVER LAuNCH EVENT, THIS TIME IN CRAILSHEIM IN SOuTHERN GERMANY. FOLLOWING THE SPECTACuLAR EuROPEAN PREMIERE IN BREMEN IN OCTOBER 2010, ANOTHER 120 VISITORS FROM BADEN-WuERTTEMBERG, BAVARIA AND RHEINLAND-PFALZ NOW HAD A CHANCE TO GET CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE NEW DYNAPAC SD PAVERS.

Then it was time for the main event. Two SD pavers were unveiled, accompanied by music and fireworks. Volker Behrens, Product Manager Pavers, presented technical innovations to the audience, for example an improved drive system, good serviceability and innovations in operating and controlling the pavers.

In the afternoon, the visitors used the opportunity for personal test drives to get to know the innovations and advantages of the new pavers. The feedback was very positive throughout.

“These machines are very impressive” was heard constantly from our customers. Thomas Hornfeldt stated: “Customers’ reactions to the new paver series have been overwhelming.” We have received lots and lots of enquiries about the pavers. Dynapac customer center Germany thanks all participants for their presence and interest, making the event such a successful one.

DYNAPAC’S PER NILSSON HAS BECOME A FAMILIAR NAME TO BOTH CuSTOMERS AND EMPLOYEES WHEN IT COMES TO HEAVY PAVING AND ROAD CONSTRuCTION MACHINERY. HE HAS BEEN WITH THE COMPANY FOR 33 YEARS, DuRING WHICH TIME DYNAPAC HAS SOLD OVER 350 NEW ASPHALT PAVERS IN SWEDEN, WITH NILSSON uSuALLY HAVING SOME INVOLVEMENT IN THE TRANSACTIONS.

how it happened. As a former customer I can easily switch roles and see things from the customer’s perspective.”

He has been able to use this ability to change perspectives in other contexts as well. He has had a number of job offers from other companies over the years, but has politely turned them down. One such offer was top-notch, from one of Dynapac’s chief competitors, and it was an attractive offer.“But when I switched perspectives and pictured myself as one of Dynapac’s competitors, I decided to stay put. All the knowledge and camaraderie, and our products and organization here at Dynapac tipped the scales.”

Along for the whole tripDuring his first years Nilsson worked as the workshop and field service manager for the Southern Region, after which he served as product manager for asphalt machines and department manager in the south. Before Atlas Copco CMT became the new owner, he was also a member of the Dynapac Nordic AB management group.

Dynapac’s hiring of Nilsson almost coincided with the company’s addition of asphalt pavers to its product line. During Nilsson’s second year, British machine maker Blaw Knox asked Dynapac to serve as their agent in Sweden. At that time, Blaw Knox was selling Dynapac in Great Britain.“That’s how I came to be along for the whole trip, right from the start. At that time I was one of the few people in the company who had experience with asphalt pavers.”

Several years later the German IBH Group that owned Blaw Knox went bankrupt. At the same time several other major machine makers came up for sale, including Klaus-Gerd Hoes in Germany.“That’s when Dynapac realized that we needed our own asphalt pavers, and we made offers for both companies. Hoes was acquired in February 1984, and Dynapac has owned and manufactured its own pavers ever since. In 1996 Dynapac also acquired Demag’s paver operations,” says Per Nilsson.

FOR AS LONG AS he has worked at Dynapac, Per Nilsson has been passionate about his job. Even though we met just before he was about to retire, his commitment was still there – to the customers, to quality products, and to the company. “I think that it’s important never to promise more than you can deliver. My strength has been that the customers have always known that they could count on me, and that I would try to find solutions if they ran into problems,” says Per Nilsson.

Important to understand the customer’s perspective Many times he has benefited from the fact that he himself started out as a Dynapac customer. At the time he was hired he was working on the machinery side at ABV Vägförbättringar, a construction company that is now part of NCC. “I was drawing up plans for an asphalt work, needed vibration rollers and contacted Dynapac to place an order. My contact there asked whether I could come down and chat for a bit, and that’s

but rather national, or sometimes even international. And Sweden’s total fleet of large asphalt pavers has shrunk from around 250 to 150. “That’s mainly because the machines get moved around within the country. It used to be that if you had a paver stationed in Ystad, it would operate in that area.”

Link between customer and design department

Despite the fact that the total market for large asphalt pavers in Sweden averages about 17 new machines a year, there have been years in which Dynapac alone has sold as many as 26 large pavers. Per Nilsson believes that the company’s success factors include quality products, a strong brand, a successful knowledge centre, high customer confidence, and a strong position in terms of after-sales services. Combined with good camaraderie and job satisfaction, these were the very advantages that led him to stay with the company for so long.

“The most fun thing was to be able to serve as a link between customers and the design department, and help turn customer input into practical benefits. It

Technical advances and a changed market

A lot has changed since those first years, and not least when it comes to the technology. In the beginning the machines required significantly more hands-on attention and heavy manual changeovers. “The biggest change has had to do with the screeds. There used to be only fixed screeds, and every time you wanted to change the paving width you had to mount fixed extensions, which could take several hours. When telescopic screeds were introduced the job became significantly easier for the paving crew.”

Other components that have undergone development include sliding seats, hydraulically raised and lowered screws, reversible screws, hydraulic cambering, hydraulic side plates, reversible conveyor belts and electrically heated screeds. “Now it’s all about environmental requirements, automation, machine control and documentation.”

The market has also changed dramatically over the years. Prices and contracts are no longer regional,

has also been extra enjoyable every time a big deal has come off, particularly if it was perhaps unexpected at the start.”

A misunderstanding becomes a successful deal

Nilsson remembers in particular one episode in which his colleagues in Norway needed help. It was just after the Gottröra crash, a well-publicized airplane crash in Sweden, and during the flight to northern Tromsö in the dead of winter there was a full-blown blizzard, with the result that the plane was still unable to land after three attempts. “Everyone was absolutely petrified, but it finally turned out well.” When Per and his Norwegian colleague subsequently went out to visit the customer, they found that there had been a misunderstanding. “I’ll never forget when the manager stood up and raised his arms and said ‘No, no, we don’t need a new machine, we just wanted you to check out our old paver’. Then I asked if I could still give the fairly extensive presentation that I’d brought with me, and they let me do it. Afterwards he asked for a proposal, and two weeks later they bought a new asphalt paver from us after all,” says Nilsson.

DYNAPAC HAS INSTITuTED CHANGES TO ITS WEBSITE THAT ARE PROVING A HuGE HELP TO uSERS IN THEIR SEARCH FOR PRODuCT INFORMATION, INSTRuCTION MANuALS AND MuCH MORE.

“WE KNOW THAT THERE IS A NEED ALSO FOR MORE EASILY ACCESSIBLE INFORMATION ON OLD EQUIPMENT, AS OUR MACHINES TEND TO HAVE A LONG LIFE SPAN.”

Customers worldwide are discovering the new services offered on dynapac.com, the Dynapac website.Technical data sheets, instructions, safety and spare parts manuals, service kit part numbers and other valuable information for Dynapac machinery – new and old – are now available with a click of the mouse. The new services available on the website have gradually increased during 2010, including most recently the addition of an easy-to-access list of used Dynapac machinery for sale worldwide, complete with facts about working hours and condition details. “This is an easy and quick way to pass the information between an interested customer and the seller, regardless of where in the world they are,” says Ingo Luebben, sales coordinator for the used Equipment Sales department. “Although this service is very new, it has already created an increased interest in trade-in and other used machinery.” Calls have come in from as far away as Nepal and Liberia, he says.

Important information in one placeMost customers remark on the easier access to technical documentation for all Dynapac machinery. What previously was available only through Dynapac service centers and distributors is now accessible to everyone entering the website. By clicking on the Products tab at dynapac.com and drilling down to individual products, users can find technical data, technical documentation, recommended fluids and service kits all in one place. If they’re searching looking for parts or service kits they can access DynaDoc, where handling instructions or manuals for all Dynapac machinery are listed. “We are among the first in our business to offer this type of information to our customers,” says Johan Thörnqvist, product manager, Rollers, Parts & Services. “It’s all about making it easier. Like finding out what oil to use for which paver and how often it should be changed, or quickly finding the right Dynapac original spare parts.”

Accessible documentation for older equipmentThe new web page contains new and useful service information regarding all available machinery on the market. “The documentation also includes older models no longer

in production,” Thörnqvist says. “We know that there is a need also for easily accessible information on old equipment, as our machines tend to have a long life span.” Most of the information on the website is adjusted to local requirements. By clicking on a Brazilian or a German flag the products listed on the page are adjusted to what is available in that particular market and where possible presented in the local language. The website is constantly being upgraded and new information added. “We are still in a feeding phase and are trying to add as much information as possible to the web page,” says Michael Carlsson, responsible for the Dynapac website. “It’s a huge job.” The web masters next plan to add a “Find” feature that is easy to access and gives a quick overview, as well as wider search facilities. “It’s all work in progress,” Carlsson says.Carlsson’s vision is to create an even more personalized website where larger customers can have their own log-in account with access to even more data and tailor-made information about their own fleet. These plans are still sitting on the drawing board though, he says.

KEN HANSEN, WHO WORKS at the Leonard Nilsen & Sønner head office in Risøyhamn, Norway, says, “DynaDoc is great. Every company should offer this service. Norwegian law states that every machine should carry a manual, but these instruction books have a tendency to disappear. Many other machine suppliers hold on to these books like they were big secrets, when they should do as Dynapac and have them easily available on the Internet.”

Hansen’s company has about 400 machines and work in progress all over the world, so access to information about service kits and spare parts has been particularly

useful. When parts need to be fixed or replaced it’s essential to find the right information right away, regardless of where in the world the repair needs to be done, he says.

Hansen learned about the new website services through Arild Rognlien at Dynapac’s Norwegian service center. “He gave us an introduction and showed us how to find information,” Hansen says. “It has been of great use to us. When we had problems finding specific information about a certain slightly older roller, a phone call to Rognlien gave us a new search route to find what we were looking for.”

BUT THE MADEIRA RIVER is changing. In 2008, work began on two huge hydroelectric projects, one of them just five kilometres outside of Porto Velho, the other 130 kilometres away. Brazil desperately needs electricity. About 80 percent of its national needs are supplied by hydroelectric schemes. Some of the power is supplied by neighbouring Argentina, a partnership that has not always been a smooth one. Brazil's economic growth, which has reached spectacular proportions, means that a secure form of extra energy is vital to national interests. Hence the creation of the Santo Antonio and Jirau projects, which will between them generate 6,600MW of electricity when they are fully operational in 2016.

The size of these two projects is staggering. Certainly, they are controversial, although the Brazilian government has deliberately chosen a design that minimizes the size of the areas that will be flooded. In engineering parlance, they are known as "run-

Porto Velho: boom town

of-river" hydroelectric schemes that use specially designed bulb turbines to extract the greatest potential from the flow of water, greatly reducing the necessary size of the reservoir. But there is no doubt that the projects are vast, with huge areas being given up to the construction of the dams, spillways and powerhouses.

That of course means a huge amount of labour is necessary. Currently, Santo Antonio has a workforce of about 11,000, while Jirau has 16,000. The workers have to come from somewhere, and there was nowhere near the necessary number in Porto Velho. Consequently, the two projects have drawn in thousands of workers from other parts of Brazil, attracted by the prospect of many years' work. A large number of them have brought their families. The camps at both the projects house thousands of workers and resemble small towns, with schools and leisure facilities.

Inevitably, despite the on-site accommodation, Port Velho has grown...and grown. Some estimates say that an extra 100,000 people have moved into the city since work began: others put the figure at 200,000. Whatever the number, the greatly enlarged population is changing the face of Porto Velho. Restaurants, smart boutiques and car dealerships are among the indicators of the new prosperity, as are snazzy new housing schemes. The handful of international-standard hotels charge eye-watering rates. The single highway that leads out to the projects needs Forth Bridge-style maintenance because of the volume of traffic it now attracts.

There is no doubt that the city's infrastructure is creaking under the strain. The authorities, in addition to the worries of providing enough in the way of essential services for the present, are also concerned about the future. What will happen to all these new people when the work is finished? How many of them will settle permanently in

Porto Velho? Although new jobs will be created by the projects when they begin operating, will this be enough to sustain the enlarged workforce?

There are two factors that bode well for the future. The city had initially sprung up in the early years of the 20th century, during construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad. At first little more than a shanty town, Porto Velho prospered through demand for Brazilian rubber, the trees being grown in this region and the latex transported by rail and river through the city. The rise of cheaper Malaysian rubber meant the end of that boom, but then cassiterite deposits were found in the area and gold was found in the Madeira River, and once again the city grew, aided by the government's decision to allow large cattle farms in the territory. So, in other words, Porto Velho was created in boom-town conditions and is used to sudden population growth.

The other factor is that these two projects are unlikely to be the only ones in this region. The Brazilian government has other schemes in mind for more dams on tributaries of the Amazon - although not the Amazon itself - and there is likely to be a need for skilled workers and labor far into the future. For Porto Velho, this could be just the beginning.

Dynapac compactors maintain Brazil highway used for hydro project

BRAZILIAN CONTRACTOR EGESA HAS A CONTRACT TO MAINTAIN THE ONLY HIGHWAY THAT RuNS BETWEEN THE GIANT JIRAu HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT AND THE NEAREST TOWN OF PORTO VELHO, STATE OF RONDÔNIA, AND IS uSING A FLEET OF DYNAPAC COMPACTORS AND ROLLERS FOR THE TASK.

A FLEET OF DYNAPAC compactors and rollers is being used by contractor Egesa to continually maintain the 130-km stretch of two-lane highway between Porto Velho and Jirau in north-western Brazil, the road being heavily used because of the construction of the huge hydroelectric project on the Madeira River at Jirau. Amongst the machines are a newly acquired Swedish-built CC424 HF vibratory compactor and a Brazilian-built CP274 pneumatic-tyred roller, which are being used in tandem to first compact and then seal the new asphalt surface that is being laid.

The highway is the BR 364, which runs all the way from the State of Mato Grosso through to Porto Velho in the State of Rondônia and passing through Rio Branco to the Peruvian border.

Construction of the Jirau hydroelectric project, some 130 km from Porto Velho, has resulted in a vast increase in traffic with manpower, equipment and supplies continually being transported along this stretch of the highway.

The project is employing around 16,000 workers, many of whom live on the job site or nearby in workers’ camps, and as many of the workers have brought their families with them, the site has its own schools and entertainment facilities.The transport of food to this remote site in Amazonia is a major logistical exercise, with 100 tons of rice being consumed in the workcamp canteens every day.Other than this, the ferrying of equipment and manpower from Porto Velho is a prime reason for the wear and tear on this stretch of the BR 364.

The highway is a total of 9 m wide, with an additional soft shoulder on each side, and runs alongside the Madeira, passing through rural countryside for its entire length.The contractor is laying an asphalt wearing course directly onto the road surface, the road itself being sound enough for the traffic but subject to exceptionally high wear.

The two Dynapac machines, working in tandem, require about six passes to compact the asphalt to the required degree of compaction, 95%!

The first awards were handed out in February 2011, to four companies that are significantly good in the health and safety.

Nilso: We are extremely proud to receive this award. To be chosen as a benchmark among so many state-of-the-art manufacturing units is very rewarding. For us, it is proof that our consistent and dedicated activities over several years have been successful. Of course we will continue to improve ourselves further. This work is never finalized.

Interviewer: By walking around this factory, it is clear to the eye that the organization of every workplace is perfect and that the employees have all the necessary tools and equipment to

The award was handed over to general manager of Dynapac Brazil product company, Nilso Pela, at an award on February 1st. Participating in the ceremony were all employees at the site, as well as representatives of local authorities and press and media. After the ceremony the employees celebrated with a nice barbecue and internal soccer game on the premises of the factory.

Interviewer: Nilso, first of all congratulations on this award. You and your management team have focused on sustainable values and safety and health for a long time. What was your reaction when you found out that you had been selected for the first award?

do a good job. How did you go about getting the factory in such a shape?

Nilso: We are following very thoroughly the best production methods available such as Lean Manufacturing, 5´s program, improvement groups, etc. We have put a lot of effort into making each station well functioning, clean and efficient. Not only does quality go up this way, but also hazards and many risks can be

avoided just by thinking through the production steps and securing good organization where worker have everything at hand and do not have to move away or search for components or tools. In addition to that we hired a consultancy firm to analyze the factory from a health and safety point of view. They helped us to identify potential safety risks and came up with proposals

on how to avoid them. Also from an ergonomic point of view, they gave good ideas on how to improve the working conditions at each work station. An example are the stools with wheels and a place to put tools beneath the seat. This way the worker can move around the machine easily and have all the needed tools with him. This was often a very simple and inexpensive solution, but together it meant a lot to improve security and ergonomics.

Interviewer: Is there something else you would mention that has contributed to your company receiving the award?

Nilso: Yes I would also mention the strong sustainability focus we have had within Dyanapc and the Road Construction Equipment division. I think we are in the forefront when it comes to realizing sustainable values in our equipment. We put operator safety, ergonomics and lowering of CO2 emissions very high on the agenda in our D&D work. It is also natural that we look into all of our operations to secure high safety and health standards there too. Last year all Dynapac manufacturing units held two global sustainability days, where all employees were informed, trained and involved in our continuous work to improve sustainability in products as well as processes. The sustainability days were very appreciated by employees, because our employees are very concerned about the environment and want to contribute as much as possible in their daily work. Just talking a lot about these values has actually helped us get better and be more aware of how we can contribute in large and small ways.

Nilso: Yes I would like to very much. First of all we have a good cause within Atlas Copco called Water for All. It is an employee driven charity fund where employees are given the opportunity to give a small part of their salary each month to the Water for All Foundation. Atlas Copco then matches the sum of all donation with double the amount and the money is put to good use drilling water wells and helping people in remote or poor areas to get access to clean drinking water.

AFTER HAVING WEATHERED the recession, there now seems to be a consensus among the exhibitors that the uS construction market is slowly recovering, and the show is projecting optimism.

THE LAST CONEXPO WAS HELD IN EARLY 2008, jUST BEFORE THE LEHMAN BROTHERS CRASH AND THE BIG FINANCIAL DOWNTURN. IN 2011, THE ATMOSPHERE AT THE SHOW WAS QUITE DIFFERENT.

Improving the odds in Las VegasIt is great to see that the pavers are well received by dealers, as well as customers. The first series of the new pavers is sold to contractors in the uS and Canada, and during the Conexpo show, a paver order for Australia was signed.

Conexpo is mainly an American exhibition, but it also attracts foreign visitors from all over the world. The Dynapac staff were busy meeting customers and dealers not only from the uS, Canada and Mexico, but also from South America, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

North America has been an important roller market for Dynapac for many, many years. (Did you know that the name Dynapac actually was created and first put to use in the uS?). Now, Dynapac can also offer pavers that are both designed and manufactured in the uSA for North American requirements.

During Conexpo, a lot of focus was therefore placed on the continued introduction of the F1000 tracked and wheeled asphalt pavers. The new pavers were introduced for the first time at the World of Asphalt show in Cleveland last year.

The CM2500 Compactasphalt hot-on-hot asphalt laying concept was on display at Conexpo, showing that Dynapac is in the forefront of paving technology. In fact, Compactasphalt was first used in the uS in 2006, and with a shipment to Canada later this year, this concept is helping to boost the Dynapac brand and business in North America.

On the roller side the demand for optimization and documentation systems is clearly increasing. Dynapac was

meeting this demand by showing, for the first time, the new DCA (Dynapac Compaction Analyzer) simulator.

Based on a real CC roller operators’ platform equipped with the DCA system, the simulator has a large computer screen to let the “driver” operate his roller on a simulated road, using the DCA system to achieve maximum compaction performance in a minimum of passes – taking the gambling out of the roller operation.

Dynapac at Samoter 2011DYNAPAC HAS BEEN a main player in the Italian road construction scene for many years. For Dynaapc, Samoter is probably the most important showcase to display new products, services and technologies

In 2011, the exhibition covered an area of around 135000 m2 with a combination of indoor and outdoor stands divided into 8 different sectors. The overall theme of Samoter this year was “Sustainable Construction”, which is an area of major focus for Dynapac. In the stand we had a lot of new machines on display and all of them release less CO2 emissions than their predecessors and therefore actively contribute to more sustainable road construction.

The Compactasphalt CM2500 module is perhaps the best example in the industry today of how a new method can drastically improve the lifetime of a road. This, in combination with a more efficient laying process and less use of asphalt material, significantly reduces CO2 emission with a more lasting road. The Compactasphalt module will be put to work directly after the exhibition by its owner, German road construction company Dallmann GmbH.

Another major item in the stand was the brand new wheeled paver SD2550C. Following the launch of the Dynapac tracked paver range last fall, the wheeled paver created a lot of interest among the Italian customers. Italy is a market for wheeled pavers and the new paver is proving to be the new state of the art machine in the market. Customers especially appreciated

the compact design, the slideable platform with new dashboard, the large tyres and the new remote control units.

Other products on display were new street smart rollers CC900S and CC1300, pneumatic roller CP274 and small paver F6-4W.

Overall, the feeling at Samoter was optimistic and promising after a series of difficult times for the Italian construction business. Many visitors and a lot of discussions about upcoming projects are signs that an upturn is on its way, also in Italy.

qINGDAO BAY BRIDGE IS CuRRENTLY THE LARGEST TRANSPORTATION INFRA-STRuCTuRE PROJECT BY A SINGLE STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISE IN CHINA. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST MAJOR BRIDGE CLuSTER ENGINEERING PROJECT IN THE FROZEN SEA OF NORTH CHINA. THE BRIDGE IS THE LONGEST CROSS-SEA BRIDGE IN THE WORLD AND IS BEING CONSTRuCTED IN TWO PHASES. BOTH PHASES ARE uNDER CONSTRuCTION AND WILL BE COMPLETED AND READY FOR uSE IN LATE 2011.

With a vibration force of higher frequency, the bridge can’t respond, due to the inherent elastic recovery frequency, which will impede the external vibration force. This will enable faster fading of vibration during the spreading, therefore reducing the impact on the bridge. If the amplitude of the roller is too high, the vibration energy can be passed further, resulting in a significant impact on the bridge structure and connection. Therefore, the roller for the pavement compaction needs to have a high frequency and low amplitude.

Wang Jian, vice manager of the bridge pavement project, Shandong Expressway Bridge Group, said, “unlike ordinary roads, there is no subbase under the asphalt pavement of the bridge, rather a cold structure of reinforced concrete. That means there is no insulation for the asphalt pavement layer. Moreover, the bridge position is high where the cooling effect caused by the wind is obvious, which results in easy cooling of the asphalt layer.”

“Take the modified asphalt as example. It will miss the good chance to compact if the temperature is below 100 degrees, which will lead to the surface compaction unqualified. The rollers must provide high compaction efficiency to complete the compaction as quickly as possible. The roller can’t work with a resonance with the bridge structure, and the roller amplitude needs to be as low as possible to eliminate the mechanical effects on the structure.”

Dynapac has the solutionIn response to the special nature of cross-sea bridge pavement construction, Shandong Expressway Bridge Group, the contractor, decided to use Dynapac pavers and compaction equipment. Two sets of Dynapac pavers and two sets of Dynapac road rollers are being used on this pavement project.

In general, vibratory compaction can be divided into the traditional vibration, directional vibration compaction, oscillation compaction, high-frequency vibration compaction, etc. High-frequency vibration compaction is being used in this construction project. Compared to the oscillation roller, the high frequency roller is based on vibration compaction with high compaction effectiveness. For the oscillation roller, the front wheel is still used for vibration while the rear wheel is designed for oscillation. If the vibration function is disabled to

IN AUGUST 2010, the bridge pavement began, and the construction of the test section was officially launched. In November 2010, as the paving was underway, journalists visited the construction site to observe the progress and get a glimpse of the majestic “lying rainbow over the sea,” as the project has been called.

The bridge pavement process involves the general road pavement layer of modified asphalt concrete for the non-navigable concrete bridge deck, the pavement layer of the flat slope section, and the epoxy asphalt concrete pavement layer for the navigable bridge deck. The project is designed to require 51,475 t of hard asphalt sand, 154,000 t of SMA-13 asphalt concrete for the load-bearing layer, 97,919 t of SMA-10 asphalt concrete for the wearing layer, and 5,905 t of epoxy asphalt concrete for paving.

The construction of the line connecting qingdao, Huangdao and Hongdao is comprised of a gravel cushion base, a weathered sand subbase stabilized with cement, a gravel subbase stabilized with cement, LSPM-30 and AC-25C asphalt concretes, subgrade drainage, and the central median drainage. An estimated 330,000 t of asphalt concrete will be required to complete the qingdao Bay Bridge pavement project at a cost of 434 million Yuan.

Strict Requirements on Bridge PavementThe deck pavement is a key aspect of the qingdao Bay Bridge construction. It affects the quality, safety, and progress of the entire bridge construction. The pavement project presented several challenges including complicated construction conditions, high technical requirements and coordination difficulties.

The vibration frequency of a traditional double-drum vibratory roller is generally designed to 42 ~ 50 Hz. This kind of vibration combination considers the compaction requirements of various materials, but overlooks the possibility that the combination of such vibration frequency and amplitude may damage the compaction structure (e.g., bridges). The resonant frequency of the bridge structure is generally low (less than 5 Hz). If the roller’s vibration frequency is also low, the damping passed by the vibration wave through the bridge is lower, which causes slower fading of the vibration force impacting the bridge.

prevent bridges from damage due to vibration, the effectiveness of the compaction will be compromised.

The vibration frequency of the high frequency roller is close to the resonant frequency of the compacted material with high compaction efficiency. The oscillation frequency of the oscillation roller is only 42 Hz, far from the resonance frequency of the thin asphalt layer (3 ~ 6 cm). The lab tests and practical tests show that the compaction effectiveness is getting better and better as the frequency increases from 50 ~ 70 Hz, but it will be worse after 70 Hz.

Dynapac CC424, CC524 and CC624 rollers can reach the maximum vibration frequency up to 67 Hz. The rolling speed can be set on demand in the operation panel. And the rollers are equipped with slow start and slow stop functions, which eliminates the necessity for a green hand to adapt to the operation lever, therefore ensuring there is no bagging in front of the wheel during the paving.

Compared to the oscillation roller, the structure of the high frequency roller is simple. There are no consumable parts inside the vibrator, e.g., the belt, and maintenance is simple.

In the critical stage of pavement project, Wang Xuejian is very satisfied with the performance of Dynapac rollers. He said, “The environment of the Bay Bridge pavement project is challenging. In order to ensure road quality, we test the completed section every day, and the test results are in full compliance with relevant standards. Dynapac pavers and compaction equipment feature high efficiency and stability, low fuel consumption, and minimal failures. That provides strong support for us to complete the work on schedule.”

What are Stage IIIB and Tier 4 all about?“Stage IIIB” is Eu legislation and “Tier 4 Interim” is uS legislation, that together require diesel engines to reduce the effects on the environment of exhaust emissions. All engines greater than 130 kW manufactured on and after 1 January 2011 will have to comply by law. They require the reduction of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). They also regulate emission levels of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). For smooth transition into these stages it is permissable to place a limited number of previous Stage/Tier compliant engines on the market.

How much is the emission reduced?PM has to be reduced around 90% and HC+NOx 50% compared to the limit from the previous stage.

What about emission legislation in other regions in the world?Japan is closely following the Eu/uS. China, India and Korea

have limits equal to earlier Eu/uS stages. Countries like Brazil, Chile and Australia have legislation in the pipeline. Eu candidate and potential candidate countries will sooner or later adopt the Eu legislation. The Eu emission regulation is also valid in the EEA countries of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein as well as in Switzerland.

Are there any special requirements for these new engines?Yes, it is very important that you use ultra low sulphur fuel (< 15 ppm S). This fuel is fully available in the Eu/uS but could be hard to find in other areas of the world. Fuel with higher sulphur content will damage your engine.

Will there be further Stages and Tiers after this?Yes, in 2014 Stage IV/Tier 4 final will start to come into force for higher power categories. The Eu Commission is discussing a Stage V.
