AT THE STATION

You might be there to pick someone up, you might be there to take the train

home, or you might be there to buy a ticket. Train stations are often crowded

and noisy. Loud public announcements are common and someone wanting to sell you

something or ask for a question might approach you. You have to find your way

to the right platform, often with luggage, and check constantly changing timetables

while in a hurry.

Festivals, fairs and concerts are social experiences. You want to connect to people to share experiences, but you don’t want to miss what’s going on at the stage. You want to move between different stages to hear your favorite

bands, but don’t want to lose your friends in the crowd. How do you find a friend at

a loud and dark concert venue?

Vibrations and noise might cause you to miss an incoming call or text message.

Establishing a network connection can be difficult at times. There might be quiet

cabins on trains. People push past you to get on and off, often with luggage. Public announcements might be called once in a while. People might peer at you from a seat behind you, and you might want to

interact with others while protecting your privacy.

You might push a shopping cart and/or a stroller with your kids. You might carry

a shopping basket. You need to keep checking your shopping list. You need to pick things off the shelves and put them

in your cart or basket. The staff might ask if you need help. You might ask the staff

for help. You need to load your items onto the belt, pay for them, pack the bags and bring the bags or the cart out from the

store.

You might sit there and wait for a friend that is late. You might want to pass time

with a game without disturbing other guests. You might want to check your

social network to see if anyone has menu recommendations. You might want to see

if someone is interested in joining you for drinks afterwards. You might want

to check up on your parents while you’re waiting for the food. You might want to

take a photo for your blog.

When one or both of your hands are used to push a stroller, interacting with a

mobile device could be difficult, especially since you are also helping the kids to a sip of water, wiping their mouths, and picking up the hat that they continuously throw

on the ground.

Walking home from the supermarket or shopping center with bags in your hands might make it difficult to interact with a mobile device without having to stop and

put the bags down.

Walking up or down a staircase, especially one that you are not familiar with,

forces you to watch your step. For steep staircases, you might want to hold on to

the handrail for balance.

When you are out hiking, you want to see and experience nature while making sure

that you don’t get lost in the process. You might also want to learn more about

plants, animals and historic landmarks. You might get sweaty, wet and dirty, and even bruises from bumping into trees and

rocks.

Horses are powerful animals, so you better pay attention to maintain balance

and control. Moving between walking, trotting and galloping will require more of your attention and more use of your

hands and arms. Device vibrations would be difficult to discern, and using a helmet

might impact your hearing.

Sometimes you might choose to have your mobile device on silent mode to avoid disturbing the meeting. Other times, you might be expecting a very important message or call. Being able to interact with others outside of the

meeting room can be very useful, but you might want to do it in a subtle way.

Often when you visit a hospital, you are not allowed to use devices with

radio transmitters. You might have to go outside, or go to a special room or

section. At the same time, hospitals can be scary and lonely, and you spend a lot of

time waiting for information and visits.

Spending a day on the beach might expose your mobile device to sand, water, sun protection lotion, wind,

bright sunshine, and so on. You might want to keep your things safe while

you take a swim, and keep track of the weather reports. You might also try,

surfing, kayaking kiteboarding and other watersports.

Interacting with mobile devices while driving is dangerous. Simply don’t do it.

Ever. But just as people still cross the street at a red light (because they think

they have everything under control), people still do it. How can mobile devices and services stimulate and reward safer

and more enjoyable driving?

Bright light can cause reflections and glare in many different situations, such

as when checking the weather report on a sunny day at the beach, writing an e-mail under a streetlight, or surfing the web for

price comparisons in a brightly lit shop.

In dusky settings, buttons might be hard to see and users might search for additional light sources, such as

streetlights or windows. They might need to ask someone else for help, or slow

down to concentrate harder. They might also simply stop using the device.

Users might send text messages while being at the movies, or set the alarm clock

while someone is sleeping beside them. They might use the mobile device to look for lost things, to find their way in a dark

garage, or wave it around during slow songs at a concert.

In cold weather, a mobile device could be uncomfortable to touch, hold in your hands or press against your ear. A touch

screen might not work while using gloves. If you are on a ski trip, the wind chill factor might be extra problematic.

Windy conditions might cause the audio to break up, and users often have to

shield the microphone with their clothes and hands, or by turning in a different

direction.

When it is raining, users might want to keep the device in their pockets. For those using touch screens, this causes obvious problems. Even if it is not raining, there could also be problems due to sweaty,

lubricated, or sticky hands, for example in industrial use situations.

A lot of people miss calls or text messages if they are in en environment where the vibration function is not strong enough,

such as when riding a train or a mountain bike.

Noise could be consistent, like music or people talking in a restaurant, or sudden, like a jetplane flying by or a car honking

the horn. In industrial environments, or in a busy city environment, these

disturbances are particularly common.

If you are in a sports arena, a church, a train station, or any other large space,

reverberation effects create overlapping sound that blurs the clarity of what you

are trying to hear.

There are places where we want to avoid talking or making noise, either to avoid disturbing others or to ensure your own

privacy, such as a quiet train cabin, at the library, or at a hunting trail.

When we are out walking, we need to continuously turn our attention to the

changes in our immediate surroundings. We need to watch for traffic as we

cross the street, watch out for other pedestrians as we walk down a crowded street (and lamp posts and waste bins,

and…), and make sure that we don’t miss to say hello to friends we meet along the

way.

Whether we are running to stay healthy or running to catch the last bus home,

we need to interact with devices without having to slow down or stop. Being forced

to stand still while in a hurry is not a pleasurable user experience.

Interacting with mobile devices while riding a bike is dangerous, because the

speed you are moving at means that even the shortest gap of attention could be devastating. But people don’t want to stop moving just to interact. How can

mobile devices and services stimulate and reward safer and more enjoyable

bike rides?

When you step into an elevator, there might be other people there. Privacy could

be a concern. You also have to push the button to get where you want to go, and pay attention to when you have arrived. Network connections can often be lost.

When you step onto an escalator, you might want to hold on to the handrail to maintain balance. Getting on and off the escalator is always a concern if you are

not paying attention, especially if you are riding with luggage or children. You also need to watch out for other people that

might squeeze past you in a hurry.

Being at a playground with smaller kids means constantly watching out for

potential hazards. Kids run around and some equipment might be unsuitable for kids of certain ages. You might want to

take photos of your child, but don’t want to violate the privacy of others. You might

want to get some work done without feeling like a terrible parent.
