Content Note The collection consists of records documenting the business activities of the Cessna Aircraft Company and papers documenting the professional and public lives of Dwane and Velma Wallace. Inclusive dates span the years 1908 to 2014, with the bulk dates from 1934 to 1981. The records provide a history of both Cessna and the general aviation industry in Wichita and document Dwane Wallace’s career with the company. The majority of material was collected by Dwane Wallace during his time with Cessna and includes incorporation documents and meeting minutes; business correspondence; annual reports to shareholders, contracts, stock reports, and financial news releases; blueprints, drawings, a project memorandum, and technical reports; aircraft certificates and radio licenses; corporate publications such as employee yearbooks, newsletters, magazines, company and airplane brochures, instruction and operating manuals for various aircraft, parts catalogs, and advertisements; news clippings about Cessna and the Wallaces; scrapbooks and photographs; administrative records, correspondence, and photographs relating to the Wallace Endowment Fund; periodicals owned by the Wallaces; speeches; awards, certificates, and plaques; oral histories; personal correspondence; biographical and personal records; audiovisual material; and company artifacts and personal memorabilia. This collection is noteworthy for its World War II-era material documenting Cessna’s prominent role in producing trainer jets for the Canadian and U.S. militaries, the public recognition Dwane received for contributions to the aviation industry, and the philanthropy he and Velma engaged in to benefit Wichita.

Administrative History A pioneering aviator and airplane manufacturer based in Wichita during the 1910s and 1920s, Clyde Cessna (1879-1954) and fellow aviation aficionado Victor Roos (1880-1964) formally incorporated the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company on September 7, 1927. Shortly thereafter, some members of the Board of Directors wanted to change the name of the business to the Cessna Aircraft Company; Roos opposed this motion and eventually sold his interest in the enterprise. On December 22, 1927 the business was reincorporated as the Cessna Aircraft Company. Throughout 1928 and into 1929, Clyde had considerable success in promoting and selling monoplanes and his son Eldon worked as an engineer for the company. With the advent of the 1930s and the Great Depression, Clyde eventually lost control within the Board of Directors and relinquished his long-held seat as President. On March 6, 1931, the new President, along with other Board members, succeeded in closing the factory doors to minimize further financial losses. Late in 1933, Clyde’s nephews, Dwane Wallace (1911-1989) and his brother Dwight (1909-1964) sought to aid their uncle in reinvigorating the company’s fortunes. The duo convinced him to write letters to Cessna stockholders, urging them to side with Clyde by reappointing him as president at the annual stockholders’ meeting. When the meeting occurred on January 18, 1934 and it was time for the appointment of new officers, Clyde held the majority of stockholder proxies and was able to regain his position and call for the reopening of the company. Dwane, who had graduated from the

University of Wichita the previous May as a student in aeronautical engineering, became the general manager of the plant, working with other engineers to develop a new aircraft design he had formulated in college. Dwight, an ambitious young attorney, became the company’s secretary and treasurer. The following years saw the production of the company’s first model, the C-34, a plane which innovated upon the Cessna aircraft of the late 1920s; this model and the others which followed it became known as the “Airmaster.” Shortly after production began on the C-34, Eldon left Cessna to join what was then the Northrop Division at Douglas Aircraft. Since business was very modest during the mid-1930s, Clyde, Dwane, and Dwight worked without salaries, with Dwane entering and winning air races for cash prizes that could supply the company payroll. In October 1936, Clyde resigned his position as president of Cessna, selling his majority stock in the company to his nephews and effectively giving them total control. Dwane became president of Cessna while Dwight maintained his duties as secretary and treasurer, eventually becoming Executive Vice-President during World War II. As the 1930s came to a close, the Airmaster series of planes which had rehabilitated the company was followed by the design and production of a new twin-engine plane, the T-50, which Dwane had envisioned as serving personal, business, and military purposes. With the onset of World War II, the United States and Canada requisitioned Cessna to build hundreds of T-50s for novice pilots to fly. The first Canadian contract, which was formalized in September 1940 and amounted to millions of dollars, was followed by others which made Cessna highly profitable for the first time since its reopening. These contracts also necessitated a large-scale hiring and plant expansion program, bringing thousands of employees into the plants to work around the clock and increasing factory space by tens of thousands of square feet. As the war progressed, Cessna performed military sub-contract work for Boeing and Douglas, producing airplane components for bombers. For its high productivity and efficiency during this era, Cessna earned five Army-Navy “E” Awards. With the end of World War II, Dwight Wallace resigned from Cessna and returned to his law practice. Dwane, who foresaw the need for affordable civilian aircraft as well as executive planes, began conceiving of models that could meet these varied purposes. The single-engine planes produced during the late 1940s and early 1950s filled these needs admirably. Cessna also profited in producing home furniture, farm machinery, and aircraft for military purposes. As the 1950s progressed and came to a close, Cessna’s continued success was evinced by greater factory space, larger employment, higher production volume, and Dwane’s receipt of awards for his professional accomplishments. The 1960s saw similar growth as Cessna offered more models for business and personal use, maintaining most of its subsidiary enterprises while expanding its market into Europe and South America. Toward the end of the decade, Dwane saw the need for an executive business jet that was more efficient and cost-effective than those available at the time. The product of this vision, the Citation, became a reality on September 10, 1971 when it received its type certification from the FAA. Although the design and production of the plane had been costly, Dwane foresaw its appeal if attention was given to customer service. To meet this need, Cessna began opening Citation Service Centers around the country so that company representatives and service technicians could work directly with customers. The expense and effort paid off as 1,000 Citations were sold by 1982, a

decade in which the jet proved to be popular and highly profitable, yet cost-effective to manufacture and maintain. After a long and fulfilling career at Cessna, Dwane retired as Chairman of the Board in 1975, having delegated presidential duties to Del Roskam in 1964 due to the company’s continued expansion. The two men acted as senior consultants to the Board of Directors until 1983 when Dwane resigned. He then devoted himself to philanthropic pursuits with his wife Velma (1917-2012), who had begun working for him as his secretary in 1937 until their marriage in 1941. During Dwane’s retirement, the Wallaces strengthened an already substantial tie to Wichita State University by establishing the Dwane and Velma Wallace Endowment Fund in March 1976. This gift provides in perpetuity scholarships for undergraduate and graduate engineering students, monies for classroom equipment, and financial awards for outstanding faculty members. In 1977 WSU honored Dwane by naming the new engineering building Wallace Hall; he was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in 1982. During this time, Dwane also received the Daniel Guggenheim Medal and the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for his services to the aviation industry. After undergoing heart surgery in June 1989, he died in Wichita on December 21 of that year. Velma Lunt Wallace maintained an active interest in the Wichita community along with Dwane and was particularly noted for her advocacy of various educational institutions and social causes, namely Exploration Place, the Red Cross, the United Way, the Kansas 4-H Foundation, and the Kansas Society for Crippled Children. For her philanthropic efforts Velma received many awards and commendations, including the President’s Medal and the Honorary Alumna Award from Wichita State University, as well as the Wichita Chamber of Commerce’s “Uncommon Citizen” Award in 1998. She maintained an active correspondence with Wallace Scholars who had graduated from WSU and gave speeches at the annual Wallace Scholar Breakfasts during the 1990s and 2000s. Velma died at the age of 95 on July 8, 2012. She and Dwane are survived by their four daughters. This series contains administrative material for the Cessna Aircraft Company, its predecessor, the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, and two subsidiary entities. Items include bylaws, articles of incorporation, and meeting minutes of the Board of Directors. Arrangement Note This series is arranged into three subseries: (1.1) Cessna Aircraft Company, (1.2) National Aero-Finance Company, and (1.3) Cessna Foundation. Records are in chronological order. Subseries 1.1: Cessna Aircraft Company, 1927-1959 Box: 1 This subseries contains administrative records of the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, which existed from September to December 1927, and those of the Cessna Aircraft Company, incorporated on December 22 of that year. Minutes often have resolutions, correspondence, and Oaths of Directors attached. Subseries 1.2: National Aero-Finance Company, 1955-1956 Box: 1 This subseries contains administrative records of the National Aero-Finance Company, a subsidiary financing corporation founded and owned by Cessna. Subseries 1.3: Cessna Foundation, 1952-1956 Box: 1 This subseries contains bylaws, the articles of incorporation, and meeting minutes for the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the Cessna Foundation.

Series 2: Business Correspondence, 1928-1964 Box: 1 This series contains correspondence in the form of letters and telegrams concerning the Cessna Aircraft Company. Notable early items include copies of Clyde Cessna’s letters from late 1933 urging stockholders to vote in his favor at the annual meeting, and a 1938 letter from Cessna to its stockholders informing them of the new twin-engine model in development. Another item of interest is a telegram from Dwane to Dwight Wallace in December 1936 telling of Dwane’s success in winning the Argentine Trophy Race at the Miami All-American Air Race, an event after which Cessna was declared “The World’s Most Efficient Airplane.” Noteworthy items from the 1940s include a letter to shareholders informing them of the company’s lucrative contracts to build T-50 planes, as well as an extended correspondence between Cessna and the United States Air Force in late 1948 and early 1949 regarding the former’s effort to supply a rescue aircraft for the latter’s mission to recover stranded aviators in Greenland. Arrangement Note: This series is ordered chronologically with the Greenland Rescue Mission material having its own folder.

Series 3: Business Meetings, Reports, Contracts, and News Releases, 1927-1985 Boxes: 1-3, 15 This series is composed of stockholders’ meeting minutes, annual reports, contracts, records of financial transactions, correspondence on Cessna’s entry into the New York Stock Exchange, financial news releases, and assorted other documents. Arrangement Note This series is divided into the following subseries: (3.1) Stockholders’ Meeting Minutes, (3.2) Annual Reports, (3.3) Contracts, (3.4) Records of Financial Transactions, (3.5) Correspondence on Cessna’s Entry into the NYSE, (3.6) News Releases, and (3.7) Other. Material is arranged chronologically. Subseries 3.1: Stockholders’ Meeting Minutes, 1927-1959 Box: 1-2 This subseries consists of minutes for annual and special meetings of Cessna stockholders. The first two sets of minutes in September and December 1927 were created during the lifetime of the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company; following the dissolution of that entity, all remaining minutes and attached records pertain to the Cessna Aircraft Company. Attachments to meeting minutes include notices for annual and special meetings, stockholder proxies, Oaths of Directors, and stockholder share reports. Subseries 3.2: Annual Reports, 1938-1985 Boxes: 2-3 This subseries contains Cessna’s Annual Reports to stockholders regarding the financial condition of the company. Most have Mid-Year or Quarterly Shareholder Reports, as well as a notice regarding the annual meeting of stockholders. Other items such as Proxy Statements with accompanying envelopes, meeting agendas, correspondence, brochures, and related financial data such as audits are also included. Annual Reports from 1939 through 1984 comprise this series, along with correspondence and Shareholder Reports from 1985. It is unknown if Cessna published an annual report for 1938. A letter from Dwane Wallace to stockholders concerning the company’s condition for this year, an attached notice of the 1939 annual meeting of stockholders, and a balance sheet reflecting Cessna’s finances for 1938 basically represent what would have constituted an annual report for this year. Subseries 3.3: Contracts, 1930-1942 Boxes: 3, 15 This subseries contains records for four separate contracts. Three of the four reflect negotiations between Cessna and the Royal Canadian Air Force in the years 1940 and 1941 regarding the production and purchase of T-50 airplanes. Material includes copies of three checks to Cessna for the first RCAF contract, the original terms of the first two contracts, as well as attached correspondence, amendments, appendices, price lists, quantity recommendation lists, and handwritten notes. RESEARCHER NOTES:
