Documentary When the Nazi dictatorship ended in 1945, it left a horrific legacy: Historians now estimate that more than 500,000 Germans participated in the mass murders of the Nazi regime. The Allies initially took on the task of punishing the guilty before handing the prosecution of Nazi criminals over to the German justice system – at which point everything changed. History in East and West Germany ran very different courses, but the outcomes were similar. After a few spectacular propaganda trials, East Germany declared itself ‘Nazi-free’. In West Germany, Nazi perpetrators were granted impunity thanks to wide-ranging amnesty laws.

Documentary The question of the link between death and rock music is frequently raised, not least because of the early deaths of rock stars such as Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious and Amy Winehouse. But even death is subject to fashion: zeitgeist and social and political backgrounds all determine how we deal with it. This musical documentary goes on a journey through pop history, starting in the sixties with psychedelic rock, via the punk movement of the seventies to Dark Wave in the eighties as well as gangsta rap. Artists from these decades explain their relationship to dying and to death – be it as a metaphysical experience of existence, the ultimate negation, world-weariness or raw violence.

Documentary When the Eastern Bloc fell apart, seven East German photographers opened the Ostkreuz photo agency in Berlin; it was the start of an incredible success story. With the Magnum agency in Paris as a role model, they managed to turn their collective into the best known and most important photo agency in Germany. Their clients include magazines such as "Newsweek,” "Stern,” "GEO” and the "New York Times”. But Ostkreuz stopped being just an East Berlin photo agency long ago. It now has 18 members from all over Europe, all with different ways of working but sharing the same humanistic view of the world. Ostkreuz has become a byword for socially committed documentary photography.

German precision meets the Arabs’ quest for power: A Stuttgart architects office has built the world's largest clock tower in Mecca. At the heart of Islam’s holiest place, it’s a building of superlatives and breaks more than 30 world records – the giant clock faces have a diameter of 43 meters, the minute hand is 23 meters long, and each of the four drives weighs 21 tons. That makes it almost 35 times larger than Big Ben in London. At night, two million LEDs illuminate the dials, which are still legible eight kilometers away. Our documentary relates the astonishing tale of an engineering masterpiece from conception to realization, and grants the viewer a rare glimpse into this holy place.

Documentary Hunts Point was once a peaceful part of the Bronx but in the 1970s, the neighborhood deteriorated into New York’s poorhouse. It became the city’s most notorious red light and drug district, a tinderbox of social problems. Even though the borough houses the world’s largest wholesale market for fish, meat and fresh vegetables and supplies around 8.4 million New Yorkers with food, more people here are malnourished than anywhere else in the city. The air is also worst here and the number of asthmatics higher. But a network of activists is now working to improve living conditions in Hunts Point and we meet some of them in this film: an ex-banker who now runs a blog giving junkies and prostitutes a voice; mothers fighting for clean air; and Chickey, affectionately known as the "Mayor of Spafford Avenue,” an ex-junkie who now provides a place of refuge for young people in his "Candy Store.”

Documentary Istanbul’s in danger! Two tectonic plates are rubbing against each other right outside the city on the Bosphorus with its population of 14 million. There have been serious seismic shocks along this fault line since 1939 and the quakes are moving inexorably towards Istanbul. The next major seismic shock could hit the city itself. But when? And how bad will it be? Professor Marco Bohnhoff from the GFZ, the German Geo Research Center in Potsdam, wants to install a new type of sensor a hundred meters below ground, as close to the earthquake zone as possible. He believes that the tectonic plates have become jammed right outside the city. If the pressure becomes too great, they will sunder with a huge bang – a horrific scenario. But will it really come to that? The new sensors deliver data with a hitherto unseen accuracy, and the first soundings seem to confirm all the worst fears.

Eyes dilated with fear, a razor blade, a face contorted with pain – Images of a circumcision in Kenya. It’s a centuries-old ritual that lives on in spite of the law against female genital mutilation adopted in 2011. The resistance from the ethnic groups that do not want to depart from the old traditions is too great, as is the pressure on the girls who allow themselves to be "voluntarily” circumcised for fear of not finding a husband. The Kenyan filmmaker Beryl Magoko traveled to her home village in the Kuria District and made a documentary in the face of great adversity about the circumcision of girls and women. With shocking accuracy, she shows the cruel practice of genital mutilation whilst still dispensing with the bloody details. Faces and stories of women and girls you will not forget...

Some are fighting for what they believe in, others because they have nowhere else to go and nothing to lose. Many of these women have never seen peace, they joined to replace fathers lost in battle and never looked back. Others have left a militia but are unable to return home so the

Documentary Noon on the July 17, 2014 and passengers are waiting in the departure hall of Amsterdam airport to board flight MH17. The crew is getting ready for the passengers. Flight captain Wan Amran Bin Wan Hussein has missed the 11th birthday of his son Yunus and has promised he’ll make it up to him once he is back home in Malaysia. Yet approximately four and a half hours later, the Malaysia Airlines aircraft is shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people aboard. No one has been held accountable for the disaster to date. A reporter team went in search of clues and unearthed some new information. They spoke with eyewitnesses at the crash site, international investigators, military experts, politicians, and intelligence officials. They also met the families of the victims. Their comprehensive report gives some answers as to what really happened that day.

Documentary In December 2014 the ISAF mission of the allied forces in Afghanistan came to an end. The International Security Assistance Force was to deliver a minimum level of democracy, security and peace to the people of Afghanistan. Reporter Ashwin Raman has been there to see the results for himself, spending two months travelling through Afghanistan in the summer of 2014. There he met German and American troops preparing to return home. He also visited the training camps of the Afghan army, on which all hopes of peace and security now rest. And he provides insights into the fearful lives of the Afghan population: never before has life been as unsafe here as it is now, with attacks and assassinations every day. The Islamist terror of the Taliban has returned and the War on Terror seems to have been lost.

Documentary Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) was a legend even in her lifetime. The cool but beautiful painter tenaciously worked her way up from being a small-town art teacher to become America’s most important 20th century female artist. Her works depict 1930s New York and the landscapes of New Mexico – the two poles between which she moved. Near Taos and Santa Fe we explore "O’Keeffe Country,” the barren landscapes between her two houses at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu which were often used as motifs in her paintings. Now the studio where she painted her most important works has opened the door to a film crew for the first time. This documentary reveals many unknown facets of a great American artist who is best known in Europe for her floral paintings, which have been reproduced millions of times.

The Mystery of the Great Zimbabwe Ruin, Zimbabwe For centuries a barren and inaccessible area in the southeast of today’s Zimbabwe harbored a remarkable secret. Sailors and traders plying Africa’s eastern seaboard and penetrating the interior of the continent told of a place that was called in the language of Shona "dzimba dza mabwe” – "great houses of stone." It was a great city made entirely of stone, but nobody knew its exact location nor who lived there. At end of the last century, the German researcher Karl Gottlieb Mauch finally managed to find the fabled "Great Zimbabwe.” But his discovery has now given rise to a host of new questions.

09:15 Burma – Rubies and Religion Documentary Long regarded as one of the world’s worst dictatorships, the military junta finally stepped down from power in 2011. However a few years on, its people continue to fight for freedom. The military remains in charge and shares its profits with the ruby lords of the world’s largest deposits of these gems. We explore the country’s ruby mines, and how the Burmese miners dream of one day finding fortunes among these stones. We also meet the Palaung rebels, many of whom have never held a rifle before, fighting the Burmese army in order to achieve greater autonomy for themselves and destroy poppy fields providing the heroin that is destroying their community. The country is rife with religious extremism, violence and islamophobia. Known as the ’Burmese Bin Laden’, extremist Buddhist monk Wira Thu has plenty to say about the small Muslim minority he is determined to chase out of Burma.

Documentary On July 20, 1944, a group of German military leaders failed at an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler and were executed as a result. Revered as heroes today, at the time of their death they were considered traitors to the Nazi regime. As a result, life was made so difficult for their children that some are still haunted by the memories. This report by Christian Wiesenborn includes unsettling accounts by the children those who plotted to kill the Fuhrer. Axel Smend is still visibly moved when he recalls how his mother came home from a parent-teacher meeting at his school with tears in her eyes. Referring to Axel’s poor grades in Latin, a teacher remarked that nothing more could to be expected from the son of a traitor. His father, Günther Smend, was among those executed in 1944. Weisenborn also looks back at his own family history – his father, too, was a resistance fighter put to death for treason. His documentary captures emotional moments from the lives of the children of the resistance and pays tribute to the courage of their parents, thereby allotting them their rightful place in history.

Documentary Many Germans associate Turkey with holidays on the beaches and Istanbul. But since 1923, the Turkish capital has been at the country’s geographic center. Home to more than five million people, Ankara was long considered a dull and rather ugly government city full of civil servants. But that’s no longer the case. Along side thriving universities and major venues for music, opera and ballet, a growing number of galleries are exhibiting modern Turkish art. And the political successes of Turkey’s governing Justice and Development Party, the AKP, over the past ten years have attracted a new Islamist elite to the city. Skyscrapers are springing up practically overnight. The Turks like to say, "Istanbul is the soul of Turkey, and Ankara is its head.” But definitely a head with a lot of heart.

Documentary August 19th, 1714. The church is filled to overflowing. There’s whispering in the pews: will it live up to expectations after three years of waiting? Will it be worth all the money invested? Those worries were put to rest as the first notes filled the room. The new organ in Freiberg Cathedral is a work of art and it made 31 year-old Gottfried Silbermann famous overnight. That same year Gottfried’s older brother Andreas began building an organ for Strasbourg Cathedral. It was to be his largest. Between them, the Silbermann brothers built almost eighty organs, all of them of the highest acoustic quality. The Silbermann brand is to the "queen of instruments” what Stradivarius is to violins. But as famous as their organs are, little is known about Silbermann brothers themselves. Reason enough to set off in search of clues and to explore how the brothers from Saxony managed to conquer the organ world.

Documentary This documentary charts a personal journey by Afro-German director Mo Asumang in search of the origins of the Aryan ideal. What does "Aryan” really mean? How do racists in Germany and the United State distort the Aryan concept? The director put some seemingly innocent questions to representatives of the self-proclaimed "master race” and attended German neo-Nazi demonstrations and propaganda events in Gera, Wismar and Potsdam, where she was met only with silence and rejection. Her research eventually led her to Iran, where she found ancient inscriptions that supported the country as the cradle of the Aryan identity and gave it a completely different meaning. In the U.S., she met with the Ku Klux Klan and an infamous racist of world renown: Tom Metzger, founder of the "White Aryan Resistance,” whose aim is to use so-called "lone wolf” tactics to ignite an "Aryan revolution.”

St. Petersburg – The Venice of the North, Russia With its baroque-classical center, St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Hardly any other city has been described by so many poets as the "Venice of the North." This, for example, is where Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Mayakovsky and Anna Akhmatova all lived. Composers such as Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich and many famous sculptors and painters also played a role in shaping the face of this city. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, St. Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1728 and then again from 1732 to 1918. During World War II, the city (then called Leningrad) survived a 900-day siege by German forces. Our film was shot during the famous "White Nights,” when the magic of this city built on twelve islands is especially powerful.

Documentary There are around 6,000 homeless people living in Romania’s capital and many find refuge beneath the city’s streets. Dozens share a makeshift "living room” in the sewer system where drugs, filth and poverty are the order of the day. Reporter Susanne Glass was granted permission to enter the subterranean home and spend time with the group of mostly addicts and orphans as they struggle with the challenges of everyday life. Not everyone is welcome: the group’s leader, who goes by the nickname Bruce Lee, is the one who decides whose allowed down into the lair. The air in the narrow shafts is hot and stale and smells of the solvents that almost all of them sniff. Pictures of the Madonna adorn the walls; for many, their leader is a father figure and spiritual guide. "Everything I do for these people, I do with God’s help,” he says. It is his dream for them to live together in one big house.

Documentary Our reporters had two weeks to find out how their peers live under a communist dictatorship that’s liberalizing for economic reasons but still clamps down on political and social liberties. The twin sons of two professors introduced the visitors to student life in Beijing. Parental authority in China is so strong that children defer to their parents when choosing a future career. Intercultural tolerance is also one thing, but despite their culinary curiosity, the reporters quickly reached their limits. Their visit to a textile factory gave them an insight into the working day of young seamstresses – albeit a superficial, strictly monitored insight. Documentary This documentary charts a personal journey by Afro-German director Mo Asumang in search of the origins of the Aryan ideal. What does “Aryan” really mean? How do racists in Germany and the United State distort the Aryan concept? The director put some seemingly innocent questions to representatives of the self-proclaimed "master race” and attended German neo-Nazi demonstrations and propaganda events in Gera, Wismar and Potsdam, where she was met only with silence and rejection. Her research eventually led her to Iran, where she found ancient inscriptions that supported the country as the cradle of the Aryan identity and gave it a completely different meaning. In the U.S., she met with the Ku Klux Klan and an infamous racist of world renown: Tom Metzger, founder of the “White Aryan Resistance,” whose aim is to use so-called “lone wolf” tactics to ignite an “Aryan revolution.”

19:15 Cameroon by Train – Documentary Train travel is a wonderful way to discover a country’s people and its culture. Cameroon, popularly called ‘Africa in Miniature’ because of its diversity of cultures, is the ideal place to go on such a journey. The railway system was developed during the German colonial era and later under the French mandate. To this day, many Cameroonians use the word “banop,” which is closely related to “Bahnhof,” the German for “station.” Our journey takes us from Douala, an economic centre near the Atlantic coast, up to Yaoundé, the country’s capital. Evidence of Cameroon’s colonial heritage can still be seen in Douala, which has a mixture of German- and French-style buildings. And with a bit of luck, visitors will also get to enjoy “makossa,” a popular urban musical style, which was spread around the country by musicians who rehearsed and played on trains.

A feat of engineering and architecture, a cathedral of industrial culture, the "most beautiful mine in the world.” The Zollverein complex, north of Essen in western Germany, covers 14 square kilometers above a vast labyrinth of tunnels extending as much as 1200 meters below ground. The Zollverein colliery is a real "city beneath a city,” an underground network some120 kilometers long. In 2001, UNESCO designated the mine and its huge coking plant a World Heritage Site. Since then – and particularly since the Zollverein became the central feature of the Ruhr’s stint as European Capital of Culture in 2010 – it has attracted hordes of visitors to the revitalized Ruhr region. Every year 1.5 million tourists come here from all over the world.

In a country that has been stuck in a political and economic crisis for decades, the disabled have been pushed to the margins of society. This is what Franziskus von Heereman found when he went to Lebanon for the first time just after he had graduated in 1997. The young German visited several institutions for the mentally and physically disabled and was horrified by what he saw. Inmates were only supplied with the basic necessities and many were kept in straitjackets or sedated with drugs. So von Heeremann had an idea: to start a summer camp for the inmates of homes for the disabled to give them a brief respite from their dreary everyday lives. A year later, he returned with 27 friends and support from the German association of the Order of Malta and put his plan into action: young volunteers provided severely disabled people with intensive and loving care in a camp in the Lebanese mountains. The Lebanon Project is now in its 15th year – and it just keeps on growing....

Bradley Mayhew, who writes travel and trekking guides, chose to walk the most beautiful stretch, the 280 kilometers segment that starts in the artists’ town of St. Ives and passes through Land’s End to Plymouth in neighboring Devon. Traveling on foot allows Bradley a chance to experience the true Cornwall. Along the way he meets people who embody the Cornish way of life and he comes across historic castles, former smugglers’ hideouts and some of the county’s most beautiful gardens.

Documentary When he was only nine years old Philip Oprong Spenner found himself in a desperate situation. His aunt, who had taken him in after the early death of his mother, abandoned him in the sprawling city of Nairobi far away from his home village. The orphan was left on a busy road clutching his sole possession, a green plastic bag that contained a tattered Bible. As a street child, he had to beg and steal in order to survive. His dream was to go to school. After an almost Dickensian turn of fortune, Philip Oprong Spenner, who is now in his early thirties, is working as a teacher at a German high school. He wants to pass on his life philosophy to his students: ‘believe in yourselves and never give up.’
