Activating and using a Dynamic Domain Name for remote access
to your Talos Security DVR
• These instructions were compiled while using a common Linksys router connected to cable modem service provided by Time Warner Cable. These instructions are intended to be a reference guide and may not include specific details relevant to your network and equipment. If you feel that this information is not adequate or relative to your network it may be necessary to solicit help from a friend or hire a network specialist.
• Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) provide the subscriber a gateway that may be a combination of modem / router / wireless / telephone. The subscriber may have limited or no access to configure the gateway to serve as needed. We suggest that the best results may come from use of a modem and a commercially available router.
• Some users may experience connectivity issues due to restrictions set by their ISP. DVRs use more bandwidth than average internet surfing, e-mail and audio/video downloads. You may find that you need to upgrade your subscription package to support your DVR internet access.
• Remote access allows the DVR owner to view the cameras connected and mounted around their home or business while away. It is comforting to be able to log-in from your desk at work and see what is happening while you are not home. Unfortunately the network security settings at your company may not allow you to access your system from work. And, the Network Administrator will probably be reluctant to change security settings to enable you to have access to your DVR.
• Please contact the technical support staff from the dealer where you purchased your DVR if you have any questions.
DDNS
• A Dynamic Domain Name Service allows the subscriber remote access to their home network without the expense of a static IP address.
• Dynamic IP addresses are used by cable and DSL internet providers and refresh when the modem is turned off or the IP address expires.
