Introduction

The DVB-S2X Library is an add-on for the Keysight Technologies, Inc. SystemVue simulation software. It is compliant with the physical layer and framing specifications in the DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X standards for satellite-based video broadcast and internet services:

– DVB-S2: ETSI standard document EN302307-1 version 1.4.1 (2014-11) – DVB-S2X: ETSI standard document EN302307-2 version 1.1.1 (2014-10)

The library includes baseband transmit source and receiver simulation reference models, including modulation, coding, and robust synchronization, and adds support for both DVB-S2 and the newer DVB-S2X standard. The library enables EVM and Bit-Error-Rate (BER) analysis for all modulation and coding (MODCOD) formats used in DVB-S2/S2X satellite communication systems, comprising > 100 distinct combinations of modulation, coding, and framing.

Productivity and flexibility for A/D applicationsNext generation satellite communication networks are being upgraded to enable high-capacity and low-latency networks, and offer dynamic service levels for key customers. This library provides a completed PHY reference design that can be used as a baseband algorithmic reference for system designers. It can also be used to generate standard-compliant test waveforms in both simulation and test & measurement to assist with baseband and RF functional validation in R&D.

– Saves time - The DVB-S2X Library reduces project overhead and streamlines the verification effort by providing a reliable, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) reference for common modulation formats. Don’t overinvest in implementing a personal reference in MATLAB or C++, just to make architectural decisions.

– Use with your existing IP – SystemVue enables the easy import of intellectual property in C++, MATLAB, and HDL formats, allowing the additional modeling details required by classified, secure and academic research applications to be easily accommodated.

– Consistent results across the R&D Lifecycle – SystemVue easily connects to test equipment and other RF design tools, enabling reliable, system-true performance at wide bandwidths for RF/FPGA co-design, digital pre-distortion, and test equipment interaction.

Together with EDA-friendly licensing that promotes design re-use and collaboration between teams, the DVB-S2X Library provides the productivity benefits of a supported COTS environment, while preserving the flexibility needed for custom/secure design teams.

Figure 1. The DVB-S2X Library supports all modulation and coding states (MODCODs) for both DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X formats. Framing and spread spectrum functions are also supported for many of these formats, allowing communication designers to quickly analyze BER performance of satellite and military radio links.

Who should use the SystemVue DVB-S2X Library? System-level architects, baseband algorithm designers, and RF component designers can use the SystemVue DVB-S2X Library to perform early R&D validation of communication system architectures, components and DSP algorithms. The DVB-S2X also provides a convenient modeling platform for custom applications and proprietary communication links.

The SystemVue environment can be automated with scripts, and connects to high-performance test equipment. SystemVue also provides links to RF design tools such as Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS), providing both flexibility and consistency across a full R&D workflow.

Figure 3. The DVB-S2X library provides reliable signal processing references that approach the theoretical performance of each modulation format. Under non-ideal conditions, the DVB-S2X also provides a full reference receiver that corrects for carrier offset frequency (due to Doppler shift or a mistuned receiver), synchronization, IQ rotation/mismatch, and other impairments, just as a finished radio would do. These corrections also make interaction with RF test equipment easy and robust.

Configuration

The E4729A DVB-S2X Library only requires the base SystemVue 2015.01 environment (W1461BP/BT). It can be added to any W146x-series SystemVue bundle, and easily shared over a network.

The E4729 DVB-S2X library does not require the SystemVue W1914EP/ET DVB-x2 baseband verification library (which contains an older implementation of DVB-S2). This DVB-S2X library completely replaces the older DVB-S2 library, and updating several key components, particularly synchronization robustness for high Doppler shifts.

Additional Keysight software applications (such as I/O libraries, Command Expert, and the 89600 VSA software) are often used to connect SystemVue to families of Keysight test equipment. These families include baseband AWGs, digitizers, RF sources, RF analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
