The Birth Survey In the United States today, it is easier to get consumer satisfaction and quality information about a car or even a blender than about maternity care services - but no longer.

The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) has developed The Birth Survey, a consumer feedback website where women provide information about the maternity care they received with specific doctors, midwives, hospitals and birth centers.

Families choosing where and with whom to birth will utilize this consumer feedback, along with data on hospital and birth center intervention rates and practices, to make informed health care choices.

For the first time, millions of mothers will be able to Share birth experiences, Connect by viewing consumer feedback on birth-providers and birth locations and Learn about actual intervention rates! This survey will provide much needed Transparency in Maternity Care. The more mothers who participate in the Birth Survey, the more information will be available to others in the future.

Starting in August 2008, anyone giving birth from 2005 on will be eligible to participate in this historical, ongoing Transparency in Maternity Care project.

Currently, hundreds of volunteers, across the nation, are working on this project that piloted in New York City last year.

Dutch Study Finds Washable Diapers are Better for the EnvironmentApril, 2008Amsterdam – Washable diapers contribute to a better environ-ment, a Dutch foundation for the protection of the environment said. Spokesman Hans van Dijk of the non-governmen-tal organization Milieu Central in Utrecht said new research demonstrated washable diapers were substantially better than single-use for the environment.

“Contrary to all previous studies that looked primarily at the damage to the environment – starting from the moment a customer buys one type of diaper or another – our study also looked at the production process, including transportation,” he said.

“Although multi-useable diapers need to be washed, which also puts a strain on the environment, we found that washable diapers are up to seven times better for the environment than single-use diapers.”

Children use an average 5,000 diapers until they are potty-trained, which is on average at the age of 3.2 years, Milieu Central says.

“Washable diapers also have an extra advantage,” says Van Dijk. “Children are potty-trained at a substantially younger age.”

Easy Label Audit For Your Diaper CountAn easy way to have us audit your diaper inventory is to write a 2-word note on the label on the soiled bag before you set it outside - “25 left”, or whatever number of clean diapers are left in your home. These labels are cut off the diaper bag and turned into the office after the soiled diaper counter counts your bag and writes the count on the label. When we add up the number left + the soiled count + the number of diapers delivered that day, we can determine if your rotation is correct. Some customers do this every week. Some do it once a month. **If you are on two or more types of diapers, please note which size you are auditing (25 Reg left, 10 Mega left).
