DuTcH DeSign HoTel ArTemiS is a design and art
hotel, inspired by the purity and originality of Dutch
Design. Dutch Design is known for its strong, original
shapes and forms, the pragmatic approach and the
use of new materials. Dutch artists love to make art
with a wink, which leads to positive inspiration and a
burst of liveliness.
From the lobby to the rooms, Dutch design is evident
in the hotel in all shapes and forms. The geometric
influences of the well known Dutch architects and
artists mondriaan, Dudok and rietveld can be seen in
the architecture of the building and the main spaces.
Throughout the hotel you will find privately owned
design furniture of contemporary Dutch designers such
as marcel Wanders, Piet Hein eek and richard Hutten.
This design together with specially commissioned
artworks, forms the Artemis Art & Design private
collection.
DUTCH DESIGN HOTEL ARTEmIS is een design
en kunst hotel, geïnspireerd door de puurheid en
originaliteit van Nederlands ontwerp. Nederlands
design is bekend om zijn sterke, originele vormen,
de pragmatische benadering en het gebruik van
nieuwe materialen. Nederlandse kunstenaars
maken graag kunst met een knipoog, dat leidt tot
positieve inspiratie en een opwelling van vrolijkheid.
Van de lobby tot aan de kamers zijn tekenen van
Nederlands design te vinden in allerlei vormen
en manieren. De geometrische invloeden van de
bekende Nederlandse architecten en kunstenaars
mondriaan, Dudok en Rietveld zijn te zien in de
architectuur van het gebouw en de algemene
ruimten.
Door het gehele hotel vindt u meubelontwerpen
van hedendaagse Nederlandse designers, zoals
marcel Wanders, Piet Hein Eek en Richard Hutten.
Deze ontwerpen samen met een aantal speciaal
opgedragen kunstwerken vormt de Artemis vaste
design & kunstcollectie.

This summer 11 designers and artists are participating
in an exposition called ‘3D’ in Dutch Design Hotel
Artemis. The exhibition shows a variety of 3D printed
artwork and striking spatial product designs.
3D printing itself is not that new anymore, but still
for many people very special. There are constantly
developments in the world of 3D printing. Think of
printing with other materials, faster and cheaper 3D
printing, printing of ingenious designs and developing
larger objects, but also taking away a logistics industry.
A sneak preview: Sjors Bergmans shows you the very
first wearable shoe, ever made with a 3D printer.
He developed this together with TNO (Netherlands
Organization for Applied Scientific Research). The
latest technique is shown by Jannie Schmitz and
Daan de Haan. In a partnership with Océ Canon they
developed special 2.5D artworks that are printed with
an innovative technique.
The exhibition ‘3D’ can be visited free of charge daily
from 6 June till 7 September 2014 in Dutch Design
Hotel Artemis, John M. Keynesplein 2 in Amsterdam.
Special '3-dimensional’ Food & Drink Design can be
ordered in restaurant-bar 'De Stijl'.

The D&A; Design & ARTemis exhibition is a unique concept where each three months the ground floor of the hotel is changed to a surprisingly different setting. Each exhibition has its own theme. Dutch Design Hotel Artemis provides a platform for both beginning and established artists and designers to show their work to an all round public. Maar liefst 11 ontwerpers en kunstenaars doen deze
zomer mee aan de expo ‘3D’ in Dutch Design Hotel
Artemis. De expositie laat een variatie van 3D-geprint
werk zien en opvallende ruimtelijke product ontwerpen.
3D-printen zelf is helemaal niet zo nieuw meer,
maar toch voor veel mensen nog heel bijzonder.
Daarnaast zijn er volop ontwikkelingen op 3D-
printgebied. Denk aan printen met andere
materialen, sneller en goedkoper 3D-printen, het
printen van ingenieuze ontwerpen en ontwikkelen van
grotere objecten, maar ook aan het wegnemen van een
hele logistieke industrie.
Een tipje van de sluier: Sjors Bergmans toont u de
allereerste draagbare schoen, die ooit gemaakt is
met een 3D-printer. Hij ontwikkelde deze samen
met TNO. De allernieuwste techniek wordt u getoond
door Jannie Schmitz en Daan de Haan. In een
samenwerking met Océ Canon ontwikkelden ze
speciale 2.5D artworks die met een innovatieve tech-
niek geprint worden.
De expositie ‘3D’ is vanaf 6 juni t/m 7 september
2014 elke dag gratis te bezoeken in Dutch Design
Hotel Artemis, John M. Keynesplein 2 in Amsterdam.
Speciaal '3-dimensionaal' Food & Drink Design
is te verkrijgen in restaurant-bar 'De Stijl'.

2.5D design
In een samenwerking met Océ Canon ontwikkelden ze speciale 2.5D artworks die met een innovatieve techniek geprint wordenDe ontwerpers Daan de Haan en Jannie Schmitz
studeerden in 2004 en 2007 af aan the Design
Academy Eindhoven en startten hun eigen
ontwerpbureaus. Na veel werk in opdracht voor
diverse grote en kleine bedrijven (op het gebied
van product-, interieur- en grafische vormgeving),
brengen ze nu ook eigen producten op de markt.
In een samenwerking met Océ Canon ontwikkelden

Screw It [4]•
De collectie Screw It zet de alledaagse PET fles in een geheel nieuw
licht. Gebruik makend van de universele schroefdop van de PET
fles, worden één of meer PET flessen op onconventionele wijze
getransformeerd tot vaas, speelgoed auto of vooraadbussen. Screw
It laat zien dat design niet altijd op nul hoeft te beginnen. Er kan
schoonheid en betekenis worden gevonden tussen de afgedankte
rommel door het ogenschijnlijk waardeloze te transformeren in
iets onverwacht waardevols.
Screw It is a collection of products reinterpreting the familiar
PET bottle in unfamiliar ways. Making clever use of the universal
screw top, the 3D printed Screw It connectors transform one or
several PET bottles into a vase, a toy truck and a food container.
Screw It shows that design does not necessarily mean starting
from scratch. There is new meaning and new value to be found
in the rubble of the discarded, transforming the seemingly
worthless into something unexpectedly precious.

‘Het meubel moet anders zijn, naar zichzelf kijken en eigenlijk geen meubel willen zijn’Toelichting Erik van de Heg
Erik van de Heg (1959) is ontwerper en meubelmaker
en heeft zijn eigen label HEGG. Hij volgde zijn
opleiding aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunst
in Arnhem, het tegenwoordige ArtEZ. Na een aantal
jaren geschilderd te hebben, werd zijn werk steeds
ruimtelijker en meer richting vormgeving. Daarom
besloot hij zich te richten op het ontwerpen en
produceren van meubels.

‘A piece of furniture should be different, look at itself and actually should not want to be furniture’About Erik van de Heg
Erik van de Heg (1959) is a designer, furniture maker,
and owner of the design label HEGG. He studied at
the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, now known
as ArtEZ. Starting out with paintings, over the
years his work gained more dimensions, and grew
towards design. That is when he decided to focus on
designing and manufacturing furniture.

Van de Heg’s paintings came from raw emotion. He created,
almost vented, large, expressive, abstract paintings, woodcuts
and a great amount of drawings out of impulse. As a designer,
Van de Heg still prefers the gesture: his furniture emerges from
series of quick sketches. Van de Heg: ‘’My basic approach did
not change. Both graphical and physical designs come from the
realm of images. Each drawing has its consequences, but also
contains the possibility to explore different routes.’
According to Van de Heg, a cabinet is just some horizontal and
vertical lines, which have to be connected. The cabinet must be,
however, feasible, functional and of realistic proportions. And
even within these clear prerequisites, he keeps his freedom of
choice. His approach steers his thinking in the attempt to free
furniture from its everyday, fixed context. Van de Heg: ‘A piece
of furniture should be different, look at itself and actually should
not want to be furniture.’
To Van de Heg, the final production of his cabinets and tables is
equally important as the design. The translation of the drawing
to the actual product of course is not always flawless. He can draw
anything he wants, but to make an actual piece of furniture out
of this, remains a quest.

Monique Diana Borgmann positioneert zich als
ontwerper die zich bezig houdt met het visuele
aspect. Zodra zij naar iets kijkt, prikkelt het de
gedachtegang, hierdoor ontstaat nieuwsgierigheid.
Verleidende, gedetailleerde, exclusieve producten
ontwerpt zij door te experimenteren met bijzonder
materiaal, kleur en vorm. De producten die zij maakt
zijn uniek doordat zij ze voor u persoonlijk maakt.
Na het afstuderen in 2013 aan het AKV St. Joost in
Breda (richting ruimtelijk ontwerp) heeft zij een start
gemaakt met haar eigen bedrijf Modibo.

She passed her Bachelor Degree at the AKV St.
Joost Breda (direction Spatial Design) in 2013.

Project SKIN
Alle in de expositie 3D getoonde kunstobjecten zijn gebaseerd op
het Project SKIN. Het product SKIN is ontstaan uit een onderzoek
naar het visueel zichtbaar maken van een relatie. Uit het onderzoek
is gebleken dat in een relatie een metaforische derde persoon
ontstaat die als nieuwe huid om je heen komt te zitten. De derde
persoon is bij elke persoonlijke dan wel zakelijke relatie uniek.
Bijvoorbeeld passie, geborgenheid, puur en exotisch zijn als expres-
sies naar voren gekomen.
De nieuwe huid (de derde persoon) creëert Monique Diana Borg-
mann met behulp van duizenden topjes van wattenstaafjes. Ver-
schillende emoties worden vervolgens visueel zichtbaar gemaakt
doormiddel van kleur en kunnen worden toegepast op alledaagse
dingen zoals vazen en canvas. Het verleidend object is een eye-
catcher in de ruimte.
Project SKIN
All in the exposition 3D shown art objects are based on project
SKIN. The product SKIN emerged from a research on making a
relationship physically visible. Research has shown that in a
relationship a metaphorical third person arises that will fit like a
new skin. The third person is unique in any personal or business
relationship. For example expressions like passion, safety, purity
and exotic came forward.
Monique Diana Borgmann creates the new skin (the third person)
by using thousands of cotton swab tips. Different emotions
are subsequently made visible by means of colour and can be
applied to everyday items like vases or canvas. The tempting
object is an eye catcher in the room.

BenJaMin I 3 in 1 chair [9]•
BenJaMin is een nieuw concept voor groot en klein, en bestaat
uit 3 stoelen: Ben, Ja en Min Zij zijn nestbaar, en vormen samen
BenJaMin. In gebruik is BenJaMin hoogte creërend, niet in ge-
bruik ruimtebesparend. Uit elkaar bieden Ben, Ja en Min comfort
en plezier voor het hele gezin.
BenJaMin is dé oplossing voor ieders formaat, 3 stoelen in 1,
waarin je een heel leven goed zit, tevens te gebruiken door het
hele gezin: van baby tot volwassenen, van Min tot Ben: Min als
babystoel en stoel voor peuters en kleuters, Ja als tienerstoel, en
Ben als volwassen stoel.

Vanessa van Tiggelhoven is product designer.

BenJaMin is de 2e lijn van Vanessa van Tiggelhoven
sinds haar afstuderen in 2011 aan de afdeling
Architectural Design van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie
in Amsterdam. Haar 1e lijn is Flip Lounge Furniture,
waaronder lounge stoel Flip, waarmee Vanessa van
Tiggelhoven in 2012 de Elle Decoration Design
Talent Award by Cappellini won.

Vanessa van Tiggelhoven is a product designer.
Due to its unique design her creations are pure and
functional, giving comfort and pleasure. BenJaMin
is the 2nd line of Vanessa van Tiggelhoven after
graduating in 2011 at the Architectural Design at
the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her 1st
line is Flip Lounge Furniture, of which lounge chair
Flip, which won in 2012 the Elle Decoration Design
Talent Award by Cappellini.

Kosy [11]•
Tafeltje, krukje, opbergruimte
Kosy is Flip’s kleine broertje, en is ontworpen om Flip en zijn
inzittende(n) gezelschap te houden. Net zoals Flip is Kosy
multifunctioneel: het kan gebruikt worden als tafel, als kruk, en als
opbergruimte. Door zijn vormgeving kan Kosy alle kanten oprollen.
Zo heb je altijd je spullen vanuit je luie stoel bij je.
Table, stool, storage device
Kosy is Flip’s little brother, and was designed to associate Flip
and its occupant(s). Like Flip, Kosy is multi-functional: it can be
used as a table, a stool, and as a storage device. Due to its unique
shape Kosy can roll to all sides. In this way you always have your
belongings next to you while being in Flip.

Lounge chair
Flip is een lounge meubel, die je door erin te zitten en te bewegen,
in een scala posities kunt kantelen en draaien. Zo bepaal je of je
geheel of gedeeltelijk in de zon, in de schaduw, in of uit de wind zit
of ligt. Flip is door zijn unieke vormgeving een lounge stoel, parasol
en windscherm in één.
Flip kan je beschermen als cocon, maar je kunt je ook openstellen
voor de dynamiek om je heen, alleen of met z’n tweeën.
Kinderen kunnen in Flip ravotten, alleen of met elkaar. Daarna
kunnen zij in Flip uitrusten. Door Flip op z’n zij te zetten fungeert
het als een hutje, wat tevens ideaal is voor moeder en kind die hier
geborgenheid kunnen vinden tegen zon en wind.
Lounge chair
Flip is a lounge chair, in which you can control the light yourself.
By flipping the chair you can decide to be partly or completely
exposed by sunlight and wind, or being protected from it. Due to
its unique shape Flip is a lounge chair, an umbrella and windscreen
in one.
Flip can protect you as a cocoon, but you can also open up to the
dynamics around you, being alone or with the two of you.
For kids Flip is a fun object to play with, you can roll to all sides,
alone, or with other children. When being tired, they can relax in
it. By putting Flip on the side you can use it as a shelter, which is
also ideal for young mothers with babies who like to be out of the
sun and wind.

'Een goed gelukte symbiose tussen traditie en innovatie'Over Peggy Bannenberg Sieraden
Sinds 2009 is Peggy Bannenberg bezig met 3D
printen. De collectie sieraden bestaat uit colliers
armbanden, ringen en halssieraden, waarbij gebruik
wordt gemaakt van de bijzondere eigenschappen
en mogelijkheden die het 3D printen met zich
meebrengt. De vormentaal laat ontwerpen toe
die niet op een andere manier te maken zijn. Het
materiaal, meestal nylon, heeft het voordeel van zijn
flexibiliteit, kleur en draagcomfort.
Maar ook andere materialen worden geprint:
titanium, staal, zilver, en een biologische kunststof
die uit de eigen printer komt. Voor deze printer is
een geheel eigen serie ontworpen van armbanden
en ringen, die terplekke ontstaan.
Onlangs is Peggy Bannenberg onderscheiden met de
Eunique Award voor toegepaste kunst in Karlsruhe (7
juni 2013), door een 5 koppige jury gekozen uit meer
dan 350 deelnemers. ‘Een goed gelukte symbiose
tussen traditie en innovatie. Door middel van 3D

About Peggy Bannenberg Jewellery
Since 2009 Peggy Bannenberg is using 3D printing to
make her jewellery. The printing technology makes it
possible to create new forms that otherwise cannot
be reproduced and opens new ways for innovative
jewellery design. 3D drawings can be printed in
nylon that with its properties like flexibility, colour,
strength, weight and surface texture is very suitable
to wear. But other materials can be printed as well:
titanium, steel, silver and a biological plastic that is
used by her own printer.
Recently (June, 2013) Peggy Bannenberg was
awarded with the Eunique Award from the European
Crafts Council in Karlsruhe out of 350 participants.
The jury reported: ‘A well-managed symbioses
between tradition and innovation. By using 3D

way she developed a surprising new idiom for her
jewellery.’

Duo-armband I Duo-bracelet [12]•
De Duo-armband bestaat uit 2 identieke delen zodat er
2 verschillende kleuren in elkaar geschoven kunnen worden. Nylon
komt normaal als wit materiaal uit de printer en kan door middel van
een verfbad ingekleurd worden. Maar dat levert altijd een uni kleur
op. De Duo-armband maakt het mogelijk om kleuren te mixen; met
een andere helft er bij zij er 3 kleurcombinaties mogelijk.
The Duo-bracelet consists of 2 identical parts and this way it is
possible to put 2 colours together. Nylon comes out of the machine
in a natural white colour and can be dyed afterwards. But then you
will always end up with a uniform colour. The Duo-bracelet makes
it possible to mix colours; with an extra halve you can make
3 different combinations.

De Kubus-hanger en ring bestaan uit losse in elkaar gehaakte
kubussen die in z’n geheel uit de printer komen. De nylon prints
worden opgebouwd uit poeder waarbij tijdens het bouwen alles
wordt ondersteund door de poeder.
The Cubes-necklace and ring are build up by interlinking cubes
that come out of the printers as a whole. The process of 3D
printing in nylon starts with a powder and the build is supported
by the powder.

Installatie
In een oud gemaal aan de rand van de stad ’s-Hertogenbosch is
het atelier van Ilse Vermeulen gevestigd. Ze werkt daar met ‘haar
rug naar de stad en de blik naar de polder’. De hier getoonde
installatie van 3D geprinte kraaien zijn deel van haar vogelproject
dat in en om haar atelier is ontstaan. In haar werk gaat het vaak
om tegenstellingen; dood-leven, stad-polder, binnen-buiten,
1-2 dimensionaal, abstract-figuratief, oud-nieuw, verzamelen-
loslaten....... en alles is met elkaar verbonden.
Installation
Ilse Vermeulen has her own studio located in an old pumping-
station in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. There she is working ‘with her back
to the city and her view to the polder’. The shown installation
of 3D printed crows are part of her bird project. Her art is often
about contradictions; death-life, city-’polder’, inside-outside, 1-2
dimensional, abstract-figurative, old-new, collecting-release....
and everything is connected.

technisch hoogstaand proces. Ilse Vermeulen ziet de techniek van
het 3D scannen en printen als een basis; een gereedschap om het

gebruik van een geavanceerde techniek - uitwerking op ambachtelijk
gemaakt Chinees papier.
Recent is er werk uit de hier getoonde opstelling aangekocht voor de collectie van het Miniatuurmuseum Over Ilse Vermeulen
Ilse Vermeulen woont en werkt in ‘s-Hertogenbosch
waar ze afstudeerde aan de Koninklijke Akademie
voor Kunst en Vormgeving. Aanvankelijk maakte
ze voornamelijk illustraties voor diverse kranten en
tijdschriften. Na de tentoonstelling ’Bouwsels’ in
het Noord-Brabants Museum richt ze zich echter op
autonoom werk. Ze werkt in verschillende disciplines.
Naast 2-dimensionaal werk maakt ze beelden in
brons en aluminium en de laatste jaren maakt ze ook
volop gebruik van de techniek van het 3D printen.
Ilse Vermeulen wordt vertegenwoordigd door galerie
Majke Hüsstege, gekozen tot de galerie van het jaar
2014. Recent is er werk uit de hier getoonde opstelling
aangekocht voor de collectie van het Miniatuur-
museum gepresenteerd in het Gemeentemuseum
Den Haag.

About Ilse Vermeulen
Ilse Vermeulen lives and works in ‘s-Hertogenbosch
where she studied at the Royal Academy of Art
and Design. At first she mainly made illustrations
for several newspapers and magazines. After the

she focused on visual art. She works in several
disciplines. Beside 2- dimensional art she makes
sculptures of bronze and aluminium. And the last
years she uses the technic of 3D-printing as a base

in The Netherlands as Gallery of the Year 2014.

De allereerste draagbare schoen gemaakt met een 3D printerOver Sjors Bergmans
Sjors Bergmans is een veelzijdige ontwerper,
werkzaam in verschillende disciplines. Met beeld,
tekst en grafiek creëert hij werelden waarin
spelenderwijs ideeën aan het licht komen. Samen
met TNO ontwikkelde hij de allereerste draagbare
schoen gemaakt met een 3D printer. Een bijzonder
project dat een omslagpunt markeert in de industrie.
Toelichting 3D geprinte schoenen
Head Over Heels is niet zomaar een mooie
damesschoen. Het is de allereerste draagbare
schoen die ooit gemaakt is met een 3D printer. TNO
Eindhoven nodigde Sjors Bergmans in 2005 uit om
de schoen te ontwerpen en mee te ontwikkelen.
Direct daarna werd ook een herenschoen ontworpen,
de Snaker. De spraakmakende resultaten vormen
een keerpunt tussen prototyping en productie voor
3D printing in de schoenenindustrie. De schoenen
zijn opgenomen in verscheidene exposities en
in de vaste collectie van het Design Museum van
Barcelona.

Head Over Heels is not just a pretty ladies pump.
It is the very first wearable shoe ever produced
with a 3D printer. In 2005 TNO Eindhoven assigns
Bergmans to design and co-develop it. Directly after,
they also develop a men’s shoe, titled the Snaker.
The ground breaking results marks a turning point
between prototyping and production for 3D printing
in the footwear industry. The shoes are included
in numerous exhibitions and in the permanent
collection of the Design Museum of Barcelona.

Snaker [18]•
De hele basis van de Snaker bestaat uit één stuk en is in één
keer geproduceerd. Toch bevat de schoen vier flexibele schakels,
die de beweging van de voet perfect volgen. De laatste schakel
functioneert tegelijkertijd als schokbreker. De Snaker omhelst de
voet vanzelf met slimme grijpers. Aan het einde zijn kleine tasters
geplaatst die ervoor zorgen dat de schoen zich nog beter aanpast
aan de geometrie van de voet.
The entire body of the Snaker is one piece of material, made in
one go. Still, the shoe has four flexible hinges that follow every
movement of the foot, like links in a chain. The final hinge also
functions as a shock breaker. The Snaker embraces the foot with
self-adjusting straps. Small feelers are placed at their tips, which
enables the shoe to adapt to the geometry of the foot even better.

Head Over Heels challenges the many possibilities of 3D printing,
and offers us a glimpse into the future. Many different, complex
features are combined in a single form. The cup-shaped element
around the front of the foot functions as a hinge, which opens
and closes with each step. Flexible strips gently embrace the foot,
making laces redundant. And at the same time, the sturdy heel
carries the entire weight of the body. Still, the entire shoe is a
single piece of material, made in one go.
The name ’Head Over Heels’ is written across the bottom in 3D.
But this could be any text or image, since the technology enables
us to completely customize each shoe, without delaying the
production process. Eventually, this means that shoes can be
produced to our exact measurements.

Head Over Heels [17]•
Head Over Heels is een schoen die vele mogelijkheden van 3D
printen benut en aan de kaak stelt, en daarmee een blik in de
toekomst werpt. Allerlei verschillende, complexe functionaliteiten
zijn in een enkele vorm verenigd. Het kuipje rond de voorvoet
functioneert bijvoorbeeld als een scharnier dat zich bij elke pas
opent en weer sluit. Met flexibele stroken materiaal omhelst de
schoen de voet vanzelf en worden veters of bandjes overbodig.
Gelijktijdig torst de hak het gewicht van het gehele lichaam. Toch
is de hele vorm in één keer en uit één stuk geproduceerd.
De titel ’Head Over Heels’ is in 3D-letters op de schoen aangebracht.
Maar in feite zou dit elke mogelijke tekst of afbeelding kunnen
zijn, omdat de techniek het mogelijk maakt om elk paar schoenen
helemaal te ‘customizen’, zonder dat dit de productie hoeft te
vertragen. Uiteindelijk betekent dit dat schoenen exact op maat
kunnen worden geproduceerd.

Over Eric van Straaten
De digitale beeldhouwer Eric van Straaten (1969,
Leiden) maakt surrealistische beelden die worden
gemaakt met een 3D-printer. Hij woont en werkt in
Haarlem. Zijn werk is tentoongesteld tijdens grote
nationale- en internationale tentoonstellingen en is
een begrip in de wereld van 3D printing.
Eric van Straaten; ‘Mijn eerste kennismaking met 3D
printen was toevallig. Mijn toenmalige vriendin, de
kunstenares Jennifer Hoes, was uitgenodigd om deel
te nemen aan een ontwerpwedstrijd van TNO en
daar werd het 3D printproces uitgelegd. Ook was
er de mogelijkheid om een eigen ontwerp te laten
printen. Ik was op dat moment bezig om een pop te
ontwerpen, een zogenaamde ‘Balljoint Doll’, waarbij
de lichaamsdelen konden bewegen door middel
van balletjes, en het leek mij een goed idee om die
mogelijkheid aan te grijpen om die pop te laten printen.
Dat beviel zo goed dat ik er mee door ben gegaan’.
In de 3D print techniek waarin hij werkt, worden
laagjes gips aan elkaar geplakt met inkt. Daardoor
is dit de enige techniek waarin je direct in kleur
kunt printen. Het 3D-printen van fijnzinnige en
ingekleurde modellen gebeurt echter nog lang
niet zomaar met één druk op de knop, maar vereist
een grote technische vaardigheid. Slechts enkelen
specialiseren zich daarom in deze techniek en er is op
dit moment geen kunstenaar die dat zo ver doorvoert
als Eric van Straaten.

About Eric van Straaten
The digital sculptor Eric van Straaten (1969, Leiden)
makes surreal images that are created with a 3D
printer. He lives and works in Haarlem. His work
has been exhibited during major national and
international exhibitions and is well known in the
world of 3D-printing.
Eric van Straaten; ' My first encounter with
3D-printing was accidental. My then girlfriend,
the artist Jennifer Hoes, was invited to participate
in a design competition by TNO (Dutch research
organisation) and there the 3D printing process
was explained. There was also the possibility for
printing your own design. I was at that time working
on getting to design a doll called a ‘Balljoint Doll’
which could move the body parts through balls,
and it seemed to me a good idea to make us of the
opportunity and print the doll. That went so well that
I have gone through with it '.
In the 3D print technique in which he works, layers
of gypsum are stuck together with ink. As a result,
this is the only technique in which you can print in
colour directly. The 3D-printing of delicate and hand
coloured models are far from being just a touch of
a button, but requires considerable technical skill.
Therefore only a few are specialized in this technique
and there is currently no artist who transits this as far
as Eric van Straaten.

Er is geen techniek waarmee een zo grote mate van hyper(sur)
realisme is te bereiken als met 3D-modelling. 3D-printen is daarbij
de enige techniek waarmee virtuele beelden werkelijk fysiek
aanraakbaar worden. Fysieke zeggingskracht in vorm en inhoud
is meteen de grootste kracht van het werk van Eric van Straaten:
terwijl de beelden een zeker digitaal gevoel blijven houden, staat
een vreemd erotiserende lichamelijkheid centraal. Balancerend
op de rand van kitsch, resoneert de marsepeinachtige kwaliteit
van het materiaal daarbij heel mooi met de schijnbare onschuld
van de enscenering.

Eric van Straaten: ‘Kunst waar ik van hou heeft altijd een multi-
gelaagdheid. Ik hou ervan dat bij de eerste glimp, het lijkt alsof
er maar één (meestal mooie) ‘waarheid’ is, maar wanneer je
verder kijkt, er nog iets aan de hand is op hetzelfde moment. Hoe

There is no other technique that reaches such a high degree
of hyper (sur)realism as 3D-modelling. 3D printing is the only
technique that allows virtual images really to be physically
touchable. Physical expressiveness in form and content is the
main strength of the work of Eric van Straaten: while the images
remain to keep a certain digital feeling, a strange eroticising
physicality stands central. Balancing on the edge of kitsch,
resonates the marzipan-like quality of the material very nicely
with the apparent innocence of the staging.

Ontwerp '008' werd toegevoegd aan de Stoelencollectie van de TU Delft Over Robert de Niet
De eerste echt goede beslissing die Robert de Niet
(Den Haag) nam op zijn ontdekkingsreis door het
leven, was om klassiek meubelstoffeerder te worden.
Het bood hem vrijheid, vakmanschap en het plezier
te werken aan meubelen uit verschillende eeuwen.
Na 10 jaar te zijn geïnspireerd door het klassieke
lijnenspel, deed hij zijn eerste stappen in het
ontwerpen van meubelen.
Het eerste hoogtepunt kwam in 2008, toen ontwerp
008 werd toegevoegd aan de Stoelencollectie van
de TU Delft en samen met een aantal grote namen
werd tentoongesteld in het Stedelijk Museum van
Kampen.
Robert de Niet speelt met elementaire vormen en
creëert krachtige, minimalistische objecten, waarbij
comfort en gebruiksgemak niet uit het oog verloren
wordt. Hij laat zien waar leven vorm ontmoet en
nodigt u uit dit met hem te delen.

About Robert de Niet
The first good decision of Robert de Niet (The
Hague) during his journey through life, was to
become a traditional upholsterer. It gave him
freedom, craftsmanship and the joy of working on
furniture from different centuries. After a decade of
being inspired by all those classical lines, he took his
first steps into designing furniture.
The first pinnacle came in 2008 when design 008
was added to the Chair Collection of the Technical
University of Delft and was exhibited together with
renowned designers at the Stedelijk Museum in
Kampen.
Robert de Niet plays with basic shapes to create
strong, minimal objects without losing sight of
comfort and usability. A display of life meeting form

Voor bijvoorbeeld de uitvoer van projecten zoals
hotel en restaurant concept inrichting. Ada 3d is

Ariadna Chmandurova is de eigenaar en lead
designer van Ada Design. Ze heeft een kantoor in
Amsterdam en Moskou. Ze studeerde o.a. af aan de
Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Minerva in Groningen,
richting interior design en meubel ontwerp.

Ada 3d takes assignments creating presentations in
3d visualizations. The 3D visualization is created in
the program 3d Max. They work for miscellaneous
renowned architectural firms, interior designers,
artists and individuals. For example, they have done
projects such as hotel and restaurant concept design.
Ada 3d is a member of the BNI. (Dutch Association of
Interior Architects)
Ariadna Chmandurova is the owner and lead designer
of Ada Design. She has an office in Amsterdam and
Moscow. She studied at the Higher Academy of the
Arts Minerva in Groningen (NL), department interior
design and furniture.

The 3D Print Canal House is an exhibition, research
- and building site for 3D printing architecture.
A unique project where an international team of
partners collaborates in 'research & doing', linking
science, design, construction and community, by
3D printing a canal house at an expo site in the very
heart of Amsterdam. You can visit!
Opening hours
Tuesday until Friday from 11AM till 5PM
and every first weekend of the month.
Entrance Fee
€ 2,50 – Includes an informative audio tour that
you can easily download on your smart phone.

Badhuiskade 11 in Amsterdam North. Walking
distance from Amsterdam Central station. Take the
short ferry ride to Buiksloterweg, directly behind
the Shell-Tower and A-Lab. Parking is possible at
the adjacent parking place of the EYE Film Institute.
