Creator: Ambrosius Bosschaert, European; Dutch, 1573 - 1621, (artist)Title: Flowers in a GlassWork Type: PaintingsDate: 1606Material: oil on copperMeasurements: Framed: 60.3cm x 52.8cm x 6.4cm, Unframed: 35.6cm x 29.3cmDescription: Signed lower left: "AB 1606. [AB ligated]"Description: One of the first artists to specialize in flower painting, Bosschaert depicted flowers with a fine technique that seems almost devoid of individual brushstrokes. His precision is also a result of the painting's copper support. When applied to the white ground typically used to coat a copper plate, oil paint takes on an enamel-like quality.Placed in a simple studded glass, the principal flowers of this bouquet are tulips, each carefully silhouetted so that their individual features could be portrayed. The anchor of this carefully arranged composition is the spider lily (hymenocallis) in the lower center, accompanied by two yellow crocuses. Butterflies, other insects, and snails enliven this still life. Bosschaert worked in the town of Middelburg, where he had access to several botanical gardens and scientific collections of natural specimens. He was also an art dealer, who traded with Antwerp, Frankfurt, London, and Ireland.Description: Full ViewRepository: The Cleveland Museum of ArtRepository: Cleveland, Ohio, USARepository: Gift of Carrie Moss Halle in memory of Salmon Portland HalleRepository: Salmon Halle, Cleveland (by 1949)Repository: 1960.108Repository: http://www.clemusart.com/Collection: The Cleveland Museum of Art CollectionCollection: Formerly in The AMICO LibraryID Number: CMA_.1960.108Source: Data from: The Cleveland Museum of ArtRights: This image was provided by The Cleveland Museum of Art. Creator: Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts, Active from 1657 Antwerpen - After 1683, FlemishTitle: Trompe l'oeil. The Reverse of a Framed PaintingTitle: Trompe l'oeil. Bagsiden af et indrammet maleriWork Type: PaintingDate: 1668-1672Material: Oil on canvasMaterial: Olie p lrredDescription: With the absence of the frame that traditionally serves as the architectural transition between the spectator's reality and the picture's painted universe, this work by the Flemish painter Gijsbrechts is moving beyond the usual realms of art and into the illusionistic domains of the stage. The deception of the eye

The deception of the eye is certainly there. When viewing the picture from afar, we are truly cheated into believing that the artist has left a painting behind on the floor with its reverse facing outwards. With its ability to surprise and deceive the spectators, this work was eminently qualified to be part of the royal Kunstkammer.A cutout

Another cutout - showing an easel bearing a still life and the reverse of a painting standing at its foot, the actual panel cut out to follow the contours of the objects painted on it - is described in the Royal Danish

Cabinet of Curiosities' first inventory from 1674 as: "A stand with painter's paraphernalia painted on perspective."The Royal Danish Cabinet of Curiosities

Back then the cabinet of curiosities was still housed at the Copenhagen Castle, but a few years later when the monarch set up the cabinet in a new building, the present-day Danish National Archives, the easel became part of the dcor of the entrance hall where it was presumably joined by The Reverse of a Framed Painting.

Repository: Statens Museum for KunstAccession Number: KMS1989Related Item: http://www.smk.dk/index.php?id=1151&L=1Related Item: http://www.smk.dk/index.php?id=1151Collection: Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK)Collection: http://www.smk.dk/en/Rights: Photograph: Statens Museum for KunstRights: In addition to making this image available pursuant to the ARTSTOR Digital Library Terms of Use, Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) makes this image available under the Creative Commons CC BY 3.0 license. Creator: Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts, Active from 1657 Antwerpen - After 1683, FlemishTitle: Trompe l'oeil with Studio Wall and Vanitas Still LifeTitle: Trompe l'oeil med ateliervg og vanitas-stillebenWork Type: PaintingDate: 1668Material: Oil on canvasMaterial: Olie p lrredDescription: In addition to the signature "C. N. Gysbrechts, F.A.O. 1668" the painting also bears the painter's "calling

card" in the form of a note bearing the address "A Monsuer / Monsuer Cornelius Norbertus / Gijsbrechts Conterfeer ggl. In. / Coppenhagen."A vanitas still life

The painting shows a wooden wall with a canvas mounted on a temporary stretcher resting on a shelf that also bears the painter's paraphernalia. The canvas shows a still life with symbols of death and resurrection, a so-called vanitas still life.It was presumably this painting that secured Gijsbrechts the position as Court Painter to the Danish kings, first Frederic 3. (1609-1675) and later Christian 5. (1646-1699).Trompe l'oeil (deception of the eye)During his four-year sojourn in Copenhagen Gijsbrechts created an extraordinary series of paintings that aimed to convince spectators that they were facing real, three-dimensional objects rather than flat paintings. The genre is called trompe l'oeil (deception of the eye) and is typical of the Baroque style with its predilection for witty illusionism, metaphor, and allegory. The genre was also popular in the rest of Europe where princes and monarchs used such paintings to amuse diplomats and distinguished guests with their clever deceptions.Description: Ud over signaturen "C. N. Gysbrechts, F.A.O. 1668" brer maleriet malerens "visitkort" i form af en seddel adresseret "A Monsuer / Monsuer Cornelius Norbertus / Gijsbrechts Conterfeer ggl. In. / Coppenhagen."Vanitas-stilleleben

Repository: Statens Museum for KunstAccession Number: KMSst537Related Item: http://www.smk.dk/index.php?id=1150&L=1Related Item: http://www.smk.dk/index.php?id=1150Collection: Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK)Collection: http://www.smk.dk/en/Rights: Photograph: Statens Museum for KunstRights: In addition to making this image available pursuant to the ARTSTOR Digital Library Terms of Use, Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) makes this image available under the Creative Commons CC BY 3.0 license. Creator: Jacques de Gheyn II, Dutch, 1565 - 1629Culture: NetherlandishTitle: Vanitas Still LifeWork Type: PaintingsPeriod: 17th centuryDate: 1621Material: Oil on panelMeasurements: Overall: 117.5 x 165.4cm (46 1/4 x 65 1/8in.); Framed: 132.08 x 180.34cm (52 x 71in.)Description: This impressive work, full of iconographical props, was painted in the Hague in 1621, during the Dutch rebellion against Spain. The painting contains the usual vanitas imagery, such as the skull which reminds the viewer of death. But the work also involves some covert political messages. For example, the box on the shelf at the top and to the left is a hat box, suggestive of the symbol of the Dutch rebellion which was the hat of freedom, and the armor is a symbol of the victory over the Spanish of Prince Maurice, for whom the painting was made.Repository: Yale University Art Gallery, Early European ArtRepository: http://artgallery.yale.edu/Repository: Gift of the Associates in Fine ArtsAccession Number: 1957.36Collection: Yale University Art GalleryID Number: 52114Source: Image and original data provided by Yale UniversityRights: For uses outside of the ARTstor terms and conditions of use, contact: John ffrench; Assoc. Creator: Simon Verelst, European; Dutch, 1644 - 1721, (artist)Title: Flowers in a VaseTitle: Vase of FlowersWork Type: PaintingsDate: c. 1669Material: oil on woodMeasurements: Unframed: 26.4cm x 22.6cmDescription: With just a few flowers, Verelst created a composi-tion of great sophistication and balance. A simple glass flask has been filled with a large rose, a red anemone, and a white narcissus tinged with pink. These flowers are surrounded by a scattering of smaller blossoms. Like many still-life painters Verelst depicted a window reflected in the glass vase, but here he did not show the window's precise structure. He did, however, use another common devicethe depiction of a few chips in the stone surface to make the material seem more tangible.Born in Holland, Verelst moved to London early in his career where he worked for the court of King James II and was extravagantly praised for the realism of his flower pictures. It was reported that the artist became so vain and conceited that he experienced a mental breakdown.Description: Full ViewRepository: The Cleveland Museum of ArtRepository: Cleveland, Ohio, USARepository: Gift of Mrs. Noah L.
