Community Fire Safety
To ensure a fire free Christmas, West Sussex Fire Brigade areissuing the following reminders to local businesses.
What About the Rubbish!
Dustbins, waste bins and skips are a very popular target forarsonists, especially over the holiday period. So keep rubbish
out of reach of potential fire raisers.
A little extra care during the festive season will ensure thateveryone enjoys a happier and safer fire free Christmas.

Don't let your business
become another fire statistic
and don't let your property
present a 'soft target'.
By taking some simple
precautions, expensive
inconvenience can be avoided.
Here are some simpleguideline's to assist you.
It’s a busy time but don't allowrubbish to build up around yourpremises.
Clean up on a regular basis.
Do not obstruct fire exits withrubbish, it may be YOU whoneeds to escape via that route
Collection of waste
Before the holiday period, makearrangements with the wastedisposal companies to collect anddispose of your waste before thecommencement of holiday periods.
Frequency of collection
With all the additional wastebuilding up to the holiday period
Are they sufficient collections or willthe waste produced; exceed thecapacity of the bins or skipsprovided?
If it does, don't ordermore bins orskips; arrangefor morefrequent
collections.

Organise your pre-Christmasshutdown now. Don't have large
volumes of waste exposed andvulnerable during the holiday breakperiod
GENERAL ADVICE ON THE STORAGE OF WASTE
§ Where possible restrict access to where waste is stored.
§ Choose where you locate your bin/skip carefully.
§ Use containers made of non-combustible material.
§ Ensure the rubbish containers are never overfilled and aresecurely shut.
§ Install security devices such as cameras, lighting or alarms instorage areas.
DO NOT site bins and skips to close to your buildings and always allow aminimum of 3 metres between skips.
Companies with large volumes of waste paper and cardboard packagingshould consider using a compactor instead of a vulnerable open skip.
Why not consider joining with other retailers or occupiers to jointlyimplement these measures.
