During the past year, the Centre for Languages and Academic Skills developed TU Write, online modules about repport writing for engineers. These modules are integrated in Brightspace and can be used in a blended education setting in which the classroom is flipped. This presentation explains what TU Write is and how it has been used in a blended setting. Furthermore, some results from the student evaluationsabout TU Write will be presented.

Every year, at the Centre for Languages and Academic Skills, we teach approximately 2000 first‐year students how to write a technical report. Because they are with so many, in most of our courses students together write one text in a group. Though we are confident that students write a good report at the end of the course, we wanted to pay more attention to developing the individual writing skills of each student as well. Because the TU Delft was starting with Brightspace, we started to develop online modules about report writing, with the intention to flip our classroom: we wanted to stop being the ‘sage on the stage’ and change to being ‘the guide on the side’.

This is where we will demonstrate the current version of TU Write.

TU Write contains modules about specific aspects of report writing. One of the modules is about writing a good reference list: a list that meets the requirements of a specific reference style and that is complete and without mistakes. In one of the interactive exercises, we have students find the mistakes in title descriptions in a reference list. This picture shows two students who are doing this exercise together. By having them work in pairs on this particular task, there is less incentive to do other things on the computer. They  really have to look at the details. After this exercise, students take a look at their own reference list (that they have prepared for this lesson). The exercise itself takes only about 5 minutes, and gives rise to many questions about the use of references, that everyone can benefit from. The result is that the reference lists are much more complete and contain less mistakes. 

In classes in which we work with writing groups, we have clear instructions that tell students which tasks they should perform during the lecture. We do not teach writing theory during the lectures anymore. Instead, we talk with each writing group, answer questions about the tasks at hand, discuss feedback, and have brief class discussions when it becomes clear that many students have the same questions. This means that we are much more able to answer the questions they have about their writing tasks when they are doing the writing or making appointments within the group about the writing process.

To find out if TU Write performed as we envisioned it, we tried to gather as much data as possible: we downloaded user statistics from Brightspace every week, to be able to see how the use of the program evolved. At the end of one of our ‘flipped’ courses, we asked students to fill in a survey. In Brightspace itself, we added surveys to all the modules, which students were free to fill in if they wanted to.

The overall statistics showed us that most modules were visited quite often. Interestingly, those modules that were connected to individual writing assignments were visited much more often than the modules where this was not the case.

The survey at the end of the course showed us that the majority of students liked the course in general. 75% of the students that filled in the survey gave the course a grade 7 or higher.

These were some of the remarks that students made in the comment part about the appreciation of the course.

68% of the students who used TU Write in the flip the classroom setting agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that TU Write was a good learning tool.

Skills courses often suffer from lack of transfer. In this case, 74% of the students told us that they would probably use TU Write again for other purposes after this course, which suggests that there may be some transfer taking place.

In the surveys we held at the end of each module, we asked students to give us their opinion about seven items on a ten point scale.

Some surveys were filled in by many students, but as the course progressed, the students became less willing to fill in the surveys, which explains the different number of participants. However, the overall score about the modules was sufficient. Students made some useful remarks that pointed us to some inconsistencies. Interestingly, the fact that two languages were used, was a bit of a problem for some students.

In general though, we are confident that students liked the course setup and the new materials we developed. It was clear that individual assignments drive the use of the modules. We are currently exploring if it is possible to give less lectures and increase our f2f moments with the writing groups.

We have used TU Write in four courses now: In the first year courses of Mechanical Engineering, Technical Policy Management and Applied Earth Sciences. We also used the course in one Master course: Sustainable Energy Technology. We plan to use it in most first year courses and we will be developing more modules about scientific writing, that will be open for the whole TU community. Besides that we want to create a hub about bachelor and master thesis writing, where students can find all the information about thesis writing in their Faculty at one place and – hopefully – we will be able to give some support to thesis writers as well by way of a writing centre in which students can get individual writing support. Finally we hope to integrate D‐PAC into TU Write, a program in which students and teachers can evaluate texts comparatively.
