Watch the opening again.
What rhetorical questions were used? Can you think of
any other rhetorical questions that could have been used?
Rhetorical questions are often used in pairs or threes
as a literary device and the informality of the
opening is used to build interest with the reader.
The opening then needs to have a linking sentence
e.g. Read on to find out how this strange little brick
turned into a household name around the world.

June 01, 2020LO: To research and record facts about LEGO.
The 'Lego' brandOver eight decades ago, a skilled carpenter called Ole Kristiansen owned a carpentry business in Billund, Denmark. Unfortunately, after his company struggled financially, his workforce was dismissed. Ole then faced more heartache when, shortly afterwards, he also lost his wife. After some time, in 1932, Ole began making toys from the wood that was left over. His aim was to only produce the very best quality toys ‐ his motto was 'Only the best is good enough'. He decided he needed a powerful brand name and eventually, he created the name 'LEGO' which is an abbreviation of the Danish words 'Leg Godt' meaning 'play well' (later on, it was also discovered LEGO means 'I put together' in Latin). Soon after, one of Ole's sons, Godtfred, started to work for the business too: he had many ideas of how to make the company into a success. As the company began to expand and the demand for toys increased, Ole was able to re‐employ some of his previous employees.
The First 'LEGO' brickDuring the next few years, the LEGO company continued to grow. Early in the 1940's, Ole's luck changed when his toy factory was destroyed by a fire; he lost all of his models and drawings inside. However, his drive to provide for his family made him carry on despite his hardship, and he built a newer and bigger factory, resuming the construction of wooden toys. It was in 1946, when Ole attended a toy convention, that he first saw a new machine ‐ a plastic moulding machine ‐ that he thought would extend the business's opportunities. They started by making plastic teddy bears and rattles but Ole could not stop thinking about the little plastic stacking brick he was given at the convention; he developed its design and put it into production ‐ the first 'LEGO' brick.
The development of LEGOOver the next few years, Ole's son, Godtfred began to take a larger role in the business and tried to increase sales of their products. When faced with a financial crisis, he travelled the country selling their toys which gave the company the money it needed. In 1954, whilst travelling back from a business trip to England, Godtfred met the owner of a shopping centre. They talked about how toys at the time had no 'system' behind them. This had a huge impact on Godtfred and he became determined to put a system into the LEGO brick; he wanted to 'strengthen children's imagination and creativity'. Sets of LEGO were produced where children could design and build houses and streets. It was a huge breakthrough and these sets were so popular that Godtfred decided to sell to places other than Denmark. There was only one problem with the bricks: they were unable to 'stick' together. Godtfred then began to enhance the design of the bricks with a tubular system inside. They were no longer just bricks ‐ a new construction system with endless opportunities was created. Unfortunately, Ole sadly died short after and never got to see how successful the brick became.
The brand evolvesGodtfred was now alone in the business and suffered another fire which destroyed the production of the wooden toys. He made the decision to focus on the LEGO bricks and expand this area of the company. As more LEGO sets were sold and sales grew, his firm got bigger and he built an airport to make it easier to transport and sell his products all over the world. His next project was to build a land full of LEGO models; he called it 'LEGOLAND'. He initially expected around 300,000 visitors in its first year but it was so successful when it opened in 1968 that it attracted over 600,000 people! The LEGO group continued to grow over the years and gained even more global success.
Today the Lego brand is known internationally for its quality toys. What started with the humble building brick, is now a company which has over 120 shops worldwide and employs 19,000 people. The company is now much more than toy it once was; Lego clothing, books, television programmes, board games, computer games and even a Lego film are all part of the Lego brand. It is now featured on most toy aisles in supermarkets, stocked in most toy shops and in 2015 Lego replaced Ferrari as the ‘world’s most powerful brand.’ The wish to encourage children to 'explore, experience and express their own world' remains at Lego’s heart. It is a company which believes that children deserve the best, and we would undoubtedly all agree with that!
