WELCOME TO DURHAM ADVENTURE FESTIVAL

When we started planning the very first Durham Adventure Festival, our aim was to build an event which celebrated everything about the great outdoors. We had aspirations for the festival to be fun and inspiring, where people could share their experiences and love for adventure.

The thing that pleased us most, was that while many visitors came to see the headline speakers, many also took a chance on speakers they had never heard of. Others came to pick up tips from the professionals about how to begin their first adventure, while some were just intrigued by the climbing wall outside the theatre, and came in to find out more. But everyone who came, left inspired and uplifted by what they saw.

It was this spirit of openness and adventurousness which drove our first festival. And from those small beginnings, the event has grown, and we are again welcoming some speakers who are leaders in their field, as well as some ordinary folk, who have done some extraordinary things.

So with the great outdoors as popular as ever (and even a climbing film - albeit, the extraordinary Free Solo... winning an Oscar), it feels like we’ve tapped into something special. So we hope we can once again inspire you to enjoy the outdoors and share the adventure.

LEO HOULDING 20.00 – 21.30 | AUDITORIUM

Leo Houlding is a world-renowned climber, known for audacious ascents of epic faces, as documented in The Asgard Project, The Wildest Dream and The Last Great Climb.

Twenty years of extreme adventures have taken him from BBC’s Top Gear to the top of Everest, from devastating injury to major world firsts, and from terrifying BASE jumps to glorious summits of the most remote and difficult peaks in every continent.

Leo talks about his life of climbing and his amazing expedition to summit the most remote mountain in the world – Antarctica’s Spectre.

1000 miles, 200+ kgs, 60 days, 1 incredible mountain. This is a tale of ambition, adventure, friendship and endeavour – uncovering some of the less known facts and history of the great white continent as well as other stories of cutting edge, vertical exploration.

ADVENTURE TALK: JENNY GRAHAM17.30 – 19.00 | AUDITORIUM

Jenny Graham is a Scottish endurance cyclist who in 2018 became the fastest woman to cycle around the world.

Jenny only got hooked on cycling in her 30s and life has never been the same since. Starting out on 16 June in Berlin, Jenny set out to become the fastest woman to cycle round the world completely unsupported - carrying all her own kit, sourcing her own food and water along the way. Cycling for an incredible 15 hours each day, bivvying in fields most nights, to keep up her morale Jenny attached a mirror to her handlebars to watch the sunset each evening.

Jenny crossed 18,000 miles across four continents and through 16 countries, returning on 18 October, smashing the previous women’s record by 20 days! Along the way, Jenny witnessed the Northern Lights, encountered bears and moose and fell asleep at the side of the road.

A member of the Adventure Syndicate (a collective of female endurance cyclists) and Cycling UK, Jenny tells the tale of her incredible bike ride.

SIR CHRIS BONINGTON17.30 – 19.00 | AUDITORIUM

Sir Chris Bonington tells the extraordinary and very personal story of a lifetime journey of discovery, pushing the limits from his discovery of climbing at the age of sixteen through to repeating his epic first ascent of the Old Man Hoy to celebrate reaching the age of 80.

In between are thrilling accounts of his first British ascent of the North Wall of the Eiger, Annapurna South Face, Everest South West Face, his epic first ascent of the Ogre with Doug Scott, one of the great survival stories of all time, and in more recent years sailing with Robin Knox-Johnston to climb an unclimbed peak.

He introduces some of the great characters of the last sixty years – Hamish MacInnes, Tom Patey, Don Whillans, Dougal Haston, Doug Scott, Peter Boardman, Joe Tasker and many others.

There are also insights into the challenges of making a living around climbing and bringing up a family.

His spellbinding narrative is illustrated with pictures and video clips from many of his climbs, making for a very special evening.

TICKETS £20

ADVENTURE TALK: JASON MALLINSON & HELEN GLOVER15.00 – 17.00 | AUDITORIUM

After taking up rowing just four years before the London 2012 Olympics, Helen Glover (alongside Heather Stanning) won Team GB’s first gold, becoming Britain’s first female rowers to win an Olympic title. A feat which they repeated four years later, after a 50-race winning streak. SHAUNA COXSEY20.00 – 21.30 | AUDITORIUM

Two Bouldering World Championships, the first British woman to boulder 8B+, founder of an award-winning women’s climbing event and an MBE all under the age of 25 underlines the ambition, talent, and determination of Britain’s top female boulderer.

Having climbed since the age of 4, Shauna set her sights high, committing herself to the goal of winning the overall IFSC Bouldering World Cup. In 2016 at the age of 23, she claimed the title and that same weekend received an MBE. Despite incurring a shoulder injury in 2016, Shauna recovered to reclaim the World Cup title the following year. Her competition success is mirrored through her outdoor achievements, becoming the first British women to climb the bouldering grade of 8b+.

With the inclusion of Sport Climbing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Shauna is taking on perhaps her toughest challenge yet: to find success on the biggest sporting stage of all.

Shauna talks about life on the World Cup circuit, her climbing philosophy and the road to Tokyo 2020.

STAND ALONE FILMS

FREE SOLO DIRECTED BY E. CHAI VASARHELYI & JIMMY CHINA stunning and intimate portrait of free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the 3,200-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park… without a rope.

Celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, Honnold’s climb set the ultimate standard: perfection or death. Succeeding in this challenge places his story in the annals of human achievement. An inspiring portrait of an athlete on a quest to triumph over the impossible, revealing the personal toll of excellence.

The film beautifully captures the death-defying climb with masterful, vertigo-inducing camerawork. See the film as it was intended, on the big screen.
