Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.” We sometimes lose sight of our own purpose and how we are meant to play a part in bringing peace to the world. So often it starts here: with internal peace – a peace with our Lord and a deep sense of rest in the creation He has made us. Such a peace radiates out into our families and our communities. Cultivated in each of us, it could bring about great change in our world. And yet, suffering and death, pain and loss, will all continue to be part of our experience. Let us pray to be instruments of peace even in moments when it seems the battle is lost. Let us never submit to the lie that violence is victorious. 6 Durban View Road, Umhlanga Email: [email protected] Web: www.saintmichaels.org.za Rector Fr Martin Tifflin: [email protected] Facebook: stmichaelsumhlanga 083 707 1344 14 th JUNE 2020 2 nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BIBLE READINGS Genesis 18:1-15 OT Pg 18 Psalm 116:1-2,11-18 APB Pg 753 Romans 5:1-8 NT Pg 226 Matthew 9:35-10:8 G Pg 15 Canticle 2 APB Pg 342 Creed Nicene APB Pg 108 Eucharistic Prayer APB Pg 119 COLLECT: Holy God, Lord of the harvest, you send your labourers to spread the gospel: call us to this work, equip us by your Spirit and send us to proclaim your good news; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. REST

Please read Psalm 125

It is all too plain that it was refusal to trust God that prevented these people from entering into God’s Rest. Hebrews 3:19

Those who followed the rule of Columba would keep the Jewish Sabbath and rest from work on Saturday as well as on Sunday. The emphasis of Sunday would be renewal and resurrection. The hours of rest and recreation are as valuable as the hours of prayer and work. The Lord Jesus reminds us that ‘the Sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the Sabbath’ (Mark2:27). In the Scriptures, even the land was given a Sabbath in the seventh year (Leviticus 15:3-5). The need for rest was built into creation (Genesis 2:1-3). A provision for this kind of rest, which is both holy and creative, should be part of each member’s personal Way of Life. The Way of Life of the Community of Aidan and Hilda

We who have lost our sense and our senses – our touch, our smell, our vision of who we are; we who frantically force and press all things, without rest for body or spirit, hurting our earth and injuring ourselves: we call a halt. We want to rest. We need to rest and allow the earth to rest. We need to reflect and to rediscover the mystery that lives in us, that is the ground of every unique expression of life, the source of the fascination that calls all things to communion. We declare a Sabbath, a space of quiet: for simply being and letting be; for recovering the great, forgotten truths; for learning how to live again. UN, Environmental Sabbath Programme

God is the one quiet unhurried Worker in the universe. He has eternity in which to do things. J. Paterson Smyth

I cast off the works that spring from a restless spirit. I rest in you, my Maker and Redeemer. Help me to order my life according to your rhythms.

Francis Solano (1549-1610) Spanish Franciscan missionary. Born in Montilla in Andalusia, he was educated by the Jesuits and at the age of 20, inspired by the example of St Francis of Assisi, entered a Franciscan monastery. He became a priest in 1576 and distinguished himself for his selflessness in treating victims of black typhus during an epidemic a few years later. On being sent on a mission to Peru and northern Argentina in 1589, he determined first to learn the language of the local population – a feat he accomplished in just 14 days – and went on to have a huge impact upon the native inhabitants of the region through his sermons, winning thousands of converts to the Catholic church. He also became well-known, in imitation of St Francis of Assisi, for his gentleness towards animals. He spent the last years of his life among sinners in Lima and became known popularly as the ‘Miracle-Worker of the New World’. He was canonized in 1726. He is the patron saint of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. Feast Day: 14 June

Prayers to use during this time of the Coronavirus pandemic Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress. Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Intercessions Let us pray to God who alone makes us dwell in safety: For all who are affected by coronavirus, through illness or isolation or anxiety, that they may find relief and recovery: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. For those who are guiding our nation at this time, and shaping national policies, that they may make wise decisions: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. For doctors, nurses and medical researchers, that through their skill and insights

many will be restored to health: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. For the vulnerable and the fearful, for the gravely ill and the dying, that they may know your comfort and peace: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Let us pray to the Lord, who is our refuge and stronghold. For the health and well-being of our nation, that all who are fearful and anxious may be at peace and free from worry: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. For the isolated and housebound, that we may be alert to their needs, and care for them in their vulnerability: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. For our homes and families, our schools and young people, and all in any kind of need or distress: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. For a blessing on our local community, that our neighbourhoods may be places of trust and friendship, where all are known and cared for: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
