Dr. Xingjian Liu

Was unanimously awarded this year’s Association of Amercian Geographers’s (AAG) Spatial Analysis and Modeling (SAM) Emerging Scholar Award for his contribution to spatial sciences and urban GIS.

Was awarded 2016 Faculty Research Output Prize for his paper on polycentric urban development in China.

His paper “Measuring Polycentric Urban Development in China: An Intercity Transportation Network Perspective” was a finalist for the 2016 Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Early Career Researcher Award (http://www.rtpi.org.uk/knowledge/research/rtpi-awards-for-research-excellence/early-career-researcher-award/).

Was the recipient of the first batch of Nanyan Honorary Professorships of the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University together with Prof. Timothy John, Fellow of Royal Society (FRS), Hasib Sabbagh Professor of Systems Biology, Harvard Medical School, USA; Prof. Gehan Amaratunga, Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering (FRAE), Professor of Engineering, Cambridge University, UK; and Prof. Zhenan Bao, Member of National Academy of Engineering (MNAE), Professor of Chemical Engineering, Stanford University, USA. The Nanyan Honorary Professorship was presented to him in the 15th Anniversary Ceremony the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University that was held in Shenzhen on 16 December 2016.

Appointed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Malaya as Visiting Professor at the Department of Estate Management of the Faculty of Built Environment from 17 November 2016 to 15 November 2017.

Re-appointed by the Chief Executive as a member of the Appeal Board Panel (Town Planning) for a term of two years from 1 October 2016 to 30 September 2018.

The study on “Industrial Land Use Changes in response to Economic Restructuring in Hong Kong” undertaken by Prof. Jimmy Leung, Dr. Kenneth Tang and Dr. Catherine Bai of the Department of Urban Planning and Design was granted a Silver Award by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners on 17 November 2016.

Dr. Xingang Zhou, Mr. Zifeng Chen and Dr. Yu Chen

Along with three students from Shenzhen University, won the Third Prize out 86 teams in the Second Open Data Challenge organized by Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Spatial Smart Sensing and Service of Shenzhen University on 25 September 2016 in Shenzhen, China. The title of the winning project is “Facility Accessibility and Non-Employment Activity Location Choice Based on Geo-Tagged Microblog Check-In Data”.

The Symposium on Mega-City Region Development in China jointly organized by the Strategic Research Theme in Contemporary China and Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning of the University of Hong Kong was held on 3 December 2016.

Mega-city region development is getting more and more important in China and the world. Ten mega-city regions in China accounted for only 11% of the total land area, but possessed 39% of the population and over 60% of the GDP. Urban clusters development is one of the development focuses of the 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020) of China as well as its new National New-Type of Urbanization Plan (2014–2020) in 2014.

Prominent scholars have examined different issues of social and economic development, environment, planning, and governance of mega-city regions in China in this one-day Symposium. They included Prof. Chaolin Gu (Tsinghua University), Prof. Zhigang Li (Wuhan University), Prof. George C.S. Lin (The University of Hong Kong), Dr. Kyungmin Nam (The University of Hong Kong), Prof. George C.S. Lin (The University of Hong Kong), Dr. Kyungmin Nam (The University of Hong Kong), Prof. Yuemin Ning (East China Normal University), Prof. Jianfa Shen (The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Prof. Donggen Wang (Hong Kong Baptist University), Dr. Jiang Xu (The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Dr. Fiona F. 2016 APNHR ConferenceHousing Issues in a New Epoch of Urbanization: Challenges and Opportunities

Conferences

The 8th APNHR Conference was held at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China from 17 to 19 December 2016. This conference attracted over 150 participants from 24 different countries and regions across six continents. This conference hosted 19 sessions and over 90 oral presentations covering broad and topical themes, such as high-density living, elderly housing, green housing and healthy living, residential mobility and big data in housing research.

The conference was co-organized by The University of Hong Kong and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Sun Yat-sen University. Guangdong Real Estate Association was the supporting organization. Dr. Shenjing He from the University of Hong Kong was the conference chair, while Prof. Yungang Liu from Sun Yat-sen University and Prof. Jie Chen of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics were vice conference chairs.

This conference invited six well-established schol-ars, practitioners and policymakers to deliver key-note speeches. Keynote speakers included Mr. Jun Feng (the Vice Director and Secretary-general of the China Real Estate Association), Prof. Chris Webster (Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong), Prof. Edward G. Goetz (the Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the University of Minnesota), Prof. Yo-suke Hirayama (Professor of Housing and Urban Studies at Kobe University), Prof. Siqi Zheng (the Director of Hang Lung Center for Real Estate at Tsinghua University) and Prof. Rachelle Alterman (the Head of the Lab on Comparative Planning Law and Land Policy at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology).

Convened by Prof. Rebecca L. H. Chiu (the Director of the Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning, The University of Hong Kong), a roundtable discus-sion themed ‘Gated Communities – Controversial to Whom?’ was organized, with Prof. Rebecca L. H. Chiu, Prof. Edward G. Goetz, Prof. Rachelle Alter-man, Prof. Chris Webster and Dr. Wan Nor Azriyati Wan Aziz as panel members.

During the conference, the organizing committee also arranged fieldtrip to one affordable housing estate (Fanghe Garden) and one commercial housing es-tate (Evergrande Royal Peninsula) on 17 December. Some overseas participants visited UNESCO World Heritage Site- Kaiping Barbican and Villages on 19 December.

10th Asia GIS Conference

Prof. Anthony Yeh and Dr. Kenneth Tang have successfully organized the 10th Asia GIS Conference with theme of “Future Smart Cities” that was held at the Rayson Huang Theatre of the University of Hong Kong from 5 to 7 January 2017. The conference was organised by the Asia GIS Association, the Hong Kong GIS Association, the Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning, HKUrbanLab and the GIS Research Centre of the University of Hong Kong. It is co-organized by the Smart City Consortium with international support of Commission 3 – Spatial Management Information of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and Commission on Geographical Information Science of the International Geographical Union (IGU) and other professional organizations in Hong Kong.

The conference was opened by the Hon. Nicholas W. Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR Government and followed by two keynote speeches by Professor Michael Batty, Fellow of Royal Society, and Professor of Bartlett School of Planning, University College London, UK; and Professor Deren Li, Academi-cian of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Professor of State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing of Wuhan University, China.

It was attended by over 170 participants from 13 countries and regions with a Technology Sharing Session of 6 presentations by GIS developers, 75 paper presentations in 18 par-allel sessions, 10 exhibition booths, and 1 book exhibition counter.

In the Council Meeting of the Asia GIS As-sociation held during the conference, Prof. Anthony Yeh stepped down from being the President of the Association and became its Past President.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES January 7 – 12, 2017Dhaka’s Research Visit

The Dhaka Research Team finished a research trip to the City from January 7 – January 12, 2017. The team comprises researchers from the Department of Urban Planning and Design and the Division of Landscape Architecture, including Dean Chris Webster, Prof. Re-becca L.H. Chiu, Dr. Shenjing He, Dr. Weifeng Li, Dr. Kyung-Min Nam, Ms. Dorothy S. Tang, and Dr. Dar-ren Cheung.

On January 7, the team visited the government hous-ing site and police housing quarter site in the Pur-bachal New Town.

On January 8, the Dhaka Research Team attended the Dialogue Series on Urban Planning and Development – “Urban Infrastructure and Housing” organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) at the Con-ference Hall, BIP, Planners Tower.

After the welcome and introduction given by Prof. AKM Abul Kalam, President of BIP, and Dr. Shammi Akter Satu, Associate Professor of Jahangirnagar Uni-versity, Prof. AKM Abul Kalam, Prof. Chris Webster and Prof. Rebecca L.H. Chiu and two other presenters gave presentation on the infrastructural and housing development issues in Hong Kong and Dhaka, fol-lowed by comments of the discussants and open dis-cussion.

Chief Guest, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Chairman of the Power and Participation Research Centre, Bangla-desh and Adviser of the former Caretaker Government of Bangladesh, and Special Guest, Dr. Khurshid Zabin Hossain Taufique, Director of Urban Development Di-rectorate, Government of Bangladesh, subsequently gave speech to the Dialogue.

On January 9, the Dhaka Research Team met with Mr. M Bazlul Karim Chaudhury, Chairman, and Mr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Chief Town Planner, of the Capital

Development Authority (RAJUK) to discuss on the latest planning issues in Dhaka.

The team visited the Bangladesh Bridge Authority and met with the Executive Director, Khandker An-warul Islam to discuss on the development of Padma Bridge.

On January 10, the Dhaka Research Team visited Kollyanpur slum and Sadek Khan slum to under-stand the present slum conditions in Dhaka.

On January 11, the Dhaka Research Team met with the Mayor of North Dhaka City Corporation, Mr. Annisul Huq, to discuss on the city development of Dhaka.

Visited the Department of Estate Management, Faculty of Built environment, University of Malaya, 15 – 22 November 2016; delivered a keynote presentation on “Urban Neighbourhood in Hong Kong: Issues & Challenges” at the Seminar in Real Estate 2016: 2.0, 16 November 2016; gave lectures on town planning, sustainable development and housing management in Hong Kong; developed a joint research project on the new Kuala Lumpur- Singapore infrastructure project in relation to the One Belt One Road development strategy; and visited planning projects and the aboriginal community.

Yaro, Former President of Regional Planning Association and Professor of Practice, PennDesign, University of Pennsylvania, and Prof. Bojie Fu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dean of the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences,

Peking University. There were 4 Keynote Speech-es, 1 Dialogue, and 5 Sessions, covering Megacities of the World, Governance and Finance of Megaci-ties, Megacity Regions, Megacity Challenges, and Planning of Megacities with a total of 29 speakers (including policy makers, city officials, urban ge-ographers, economists, planners, public finance ex-perts, etc), covering over 10 megacities in Global North, Global South, and China.

Was one of the guest panelists of Youth Summit 2016 organized by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Commission on Youth on 26 November 2016 at the Youth Square together with Mr. Paul Chan Mo-Po, Secretary for Development, and Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, in the session on Future Urban Planning and Development.

Prof. Bo-Sin Tang

Attended the Annual China Planning Conference at Shenyang, China and gave a presentation on the topic about “Successful Application of TOD: Review of MTR and Urban Development in Hong Kong” at the Hong Kong Forum co-organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners and the Urban Planning Society of China on 25 September 2016. He also attended the Young Planners Forum in which a number of MSc Urban Planning students were involved in giving presentations about the planning and development issues of Victoria Harbour.

Was invited to give a presentation on Compact City and High-density Urban Development in Hong Kong: Applications and Challenges at the International Symposium on Land Resource Utilization and Management jointly organized by the Shanghai Institute of Geological Survey, Zhejiang University’s Land Academy for National Development, Shanghai Planning and Land Resources Administration Bureau and the Ministry of Land and Resources on 12 November 2016 in Shanghai.

Gave a presentation about urban planning and in-tegrated rail-property development in Hong Kong at the Zhejiang University – the Hong Kong Poly-technic University Joint Centre on 10 December 2016.

Attended the 2016 Research Workshop on Commu-nity Planning and Governance about “Shareholding Reforms and Institutional Capacity Building for Community Governance in Periurban China: The-ory and Practice” at Yiwu, China on 12 December 2016. He gave a presentation to review the urban-ization of the countryside in Hong Kong and par-ticipated in the workshop discussions. The Work-shop involved presentations by representatives and scholars from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Hes-hilu Village, Renmin University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Zhejiang University, Zheji-ang Normal University, and Central University of Finance and Economics.

Dr. Shenjing He

Led a group of six PhD candidates/researchers (including one Post-doc and one senior research assistant) from DUPAD and REC to visit Chongqing University, 22-29 December 2016. Group members from FoA HKU include Ms. Rong Cai, Dr. Dong Wang, Ms. Xi Wang, Mr. Zongcai Wei, Mr. Linchuan Yang, Dr. Zhao Zhang. This trip was funded by the “HKU-China 1000 Exchange scheme 2016, the Ministry of Education, P. R. China. The co-organizer of this exchange activity is Dr. Miao Xu from the School of Architecture and Urban

Planning, Chongqing University. Six researchers from HKU and five PhD candidates from Chongqing University presented their research at the Doctoral Forum on Urban Transition and Governance, Dr. Shenjing He and faculty members from Chongqing University, include the Dean of Architecture and the Head of Planning Department served as discussants.

Delivered an invited public lecture on Homeowner Associations and Neighborhood Governance of Gated Community – A Case Study of Guangzhou, at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Chongqing University, 23 December 2016.

Dr. Jianxiang Huang

Served as a Co-Rapporteur in the 52nd International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) Congress taking place in Durban, South Africa from 12-16 September 2016. He has also presented a paper entitled “Pleasant Urban Experiences: Re-Examining Place-Making Theories Using Social Media Data in High-Density Cities”. The paper

summarized an interdisciplinary study conducted by Jianxiang Huang, Qingpeng Zhang, Lishuai Li, Yiyang Yang, Alain Chiaradia, Matthew Pryor, and Chris Webster.

Along with Professor Phil Jones, met with Chairman of the Shenyang Dongtai District Heating Company in Beijing on 23 October 2016 for the research project on Building Energy and District Heating in Northern China. The research project will look at modeling and improvement of building energy performance, district heating system, and human health in Continental Climate of Northern China.

Dr. Mandy Lau

Presented a paper entitled “Mobilization around the issue of inadequate rental housing in Hong Kong” at the 2016 Asia-Pacific Network for Housing Research Conference, organized by CUSUP, FoA, HKU and Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, 17–19 December 2016.

Dr. Kyung-Min Nam

Presented his co-authored paper, entitled “Health damage from excess PM2.5 pollution in China and its cross-provincial distribution”, at the 2016 North American Meetings of the Regional Science International, Minneapolis, MN, USA, 9-12 November 2016.

Delivered a presentation at the International Mega-city Region Symposium, December 3, 2016, co-organized by the Strategic Research Theme in Contemporary China and the Center for Urban Studies and Urban Planning, HKU.

Visited Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School to conduct a survey from November 2016 to January 2017. During his visit, Dr. Liu taught a postgraduate seminar course entitled “Seminar series on Research Design” for postgraduate students in the School of Urban Planning and Design at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School.

19 November 2016MUP Community Planning WorkshopMSc Urban Planning Year 2 students organized the Sham Shui Po District Community Planning Workshop at a secondary school hall near Mei Foo Sun Chuen on 19 November 2016. This workshop was part of a public engagement exercise in their Community Planning Studio course with a view to formulating a district improvement plan for the Sham Shui Po district. Over 100 participants were involved in the Workshop.

Student Workshops, Studios and Presentations

The Master of Housing Management Alumni Association organized a trip to Shenzhen city centre and Qianhai. The group visited Shenzhen’s tallest building, Ping An Financial Centre, and Qianhai’s commercial sites and the Qianhai Management Centre.

11 February 2017 The HK2030+ WorkshopThe HK2030+ Workshop, co organized by the Development Bureau and Planning Department of the HK SAR Government and, the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD), was held on Sat, 11 Feb 2017 in the DUPAD’s Studio. The Workshop was organized exclusively for students of the Faculty of Architecture (FOA). There were about 90 students from the various programs of FOA participating in the Workshop. They were briefed about the proposals of the update of the territorial plan HK 2030 and had actively contributed their ideas on the future plan for Hong Kong in the group discussions, in the areas of Living Space; Planning for all Ages; Urban Rejuvenation; People, Health and Nature; Planning for Youth Development; and, Capacity Creation and Smart, Green and Resilient City.

Following the reorganization of the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management (CUPEM) on 1 July 2008, the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) was established in the Faculty of Architecture to continue the teaching of urban planning and related areas in housing management and transport, in addition to urban design. The Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning (CUSUP) which was established 35 years ago in 1980 and renamed as CUPEM in 1991, is re-established to continue interdisciplinary research in urban studies and planning.
