fter 68 issues, DUO Magazine has just ushered in its sixth year. Something that’s a bit sobering to admit for those of us who have been

there the whole ride! What started as a vision to offer Townsville a quality medium to share inspiring stories featuring our own local people, and to showcase the very best of what our great city has to offer, has grown and evolved month-by-month. We hope you have become one of the readers who tell us they’ve kept every issue, or have multiple DUOs lining coffee table tops. One aspect of the magazine that has remained fairly constant over its life is having local women gracing the cover. In the very first year we decided to create a competition called the 12 Faces of DUO where local ladies would have the opportunity to be the face of the magazine for a month of the year. This competition, voted by the public, was instantly a hit. We’re proud to say, since Courtney Smythe appeared on Issue 10, it has resulted in more than 58 cover girls to-date. These vibrant women have hailed from all different backgrounds and have represented

various

different looks and styles. The great news is we’re again calling for nominations. If you’re a Townsville woman aged between 18 and 55, or have a friend or family member who is, encourage them to put their name forward. Not only will they be able to claim a piece of magazine history, but the whole process is also a lot of fun (not to mention the perfect opportunity to have your hair and make-up done and wear a beautiful designer dress). The 12 Faces of DUO competition is just one way that DUO Magazine is committed to promoting and giving a voice to our region. DUO Magazine’s success and longevity is intrinsically linked to the development and community vision of our city... so we hope our creation does you proud as a representation of the new Townsville. Every year DUO Magazine holds a competition where 12 local girls are chosen to grace the magazine’s cover for a month of the year. In January we are delighted to introduce you to:

HEIDI BALDERSONMajor’s Creek girl Heidi Balderson, 27, is a practice support coordinator for North and West Queensland Primary Health Care. Heidi lives on acreage with her fiancé Jared, and they’re currently planning their wedding in June this year. When Heidi isn’t working or organising her nuptials, she loves riding their horses on the property.

HAIRCAPELLI HAIR GALLERY We used Kérastase hair care products to help create Heidi’s look. We blow-dried fullness into the hair, then – leaving out the top section from fringe to crown – we smoothed the remaining hair with nourishing Elixir and created a helmet ponytail at the base of her neck. We backcombed through the top section to create a quiff. Using GHD’s classic iron and creation spray, we curled, created loops and pinned the hair to create fullness. We finished with L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray for a firm but flexible hold.

MAKE-UPCAPELLI HAIR GALLERY Using Napoleon Perdis cosmetics, we prepared the skin with primer. We then applied Sheer Genius Liquid Foundation to give a soft-but-medium coverage, followed with Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation and a light dust of Camera Finish Powder. On Heidi’s eyes we used Colour Disc Bittersweet Chocolate under the brow arch, then blended and brightened with Ultra Suede. Mesmer Eyes Mascara plumped the lashes, while the Mosaic Blush highlighted her gorgeous contours. To finish, we lined and filled the lips with Mauve Minx Lip Liner and Love Shine Lip Lacquer.

H appiness is a slippery little sucker – we spend so much time and effort trying to secure it, then once we have the elusive feeling in our grasp it can fall through our fingers with little warning.

Practising psychologist Justine Goddard reveals the pursuit of happiness is a continuing theme throughout her career, but the problem is – while there is a lot of information available in the wider community – it’s not all based on scientifically-proven methods. “Often the techniques sprouted can end up making us feel worse, not better, in the long run,” she passionately explains. “Besides, happiness is an emotion that’s not static, so people are chasing something that’s not attainable, which is 100 per cent happiness all the time. A more realistic and emotionally attainable goal is the pursuit of a life that is rich and fulfilling, and having an ability to confidently deal with the emotional effects of life’s ups and downs.”

Justine recently began formulating a workshop that conveyed the key ingredients to thrive in life and considered the things that women love to do (“enjoying the company of girlfriends and like-minded people, relaxing, pampering, shopping, exercising, having time to themselves”). The result was an alluring way of combining these activities with her education: a retreat to beautiful Bali. “I researched the women’s retreats already on offer in Bali, but couldn’t find any that were run by a qualified psychologist,” Justine tells, “therefore the participants couldn’t be assured they were receiving information from a qualified health professional, nor be sure the benefits of the retreat were long-lasting. I wanted to offer scientifically-based, sustainable and user-friendly tools and techniques to help women nurture their mind and thrive in life, while offering daily pampering and yoga as a means nurturing body and soul.”

The holistic retreat is scheduled for late May and will also include extras such as cooking classes and meditation. The daily yoga classes will be delivered by the experienced Kerry Spina, and can be practised as little or as much as participants wish. Justine ensured yoga was featured because she says it’s for everyone – “all shapes and sizes, flexibility and fitness levels” – plus it is similar to and complements modern psychology with elements like diaphragmatic breathing, mindfulness, relaxation and guided imagery.

Another positive outcome of the retreat, this time going beyond the individual, is the fact that 10 per cent of any profit made will be donated to Women for Women International, which sponsors disadvantaged women from war-torn countries. “So by doing something wonderful for themselves local women will be greatly benefiting the life of another woman in the world, which is what the retreat is all about – women helping women and passing it on,” Justine tells. “Oh, and having fun while they’re at it!”

With both parents being artists, what are some memories from your creative upbringing? [Louise’s dad is renowned painter John Olsen] My fondest memory growing up was watching my parents paint in their studios. Wherever we were in the world, living in London or Spain, they had their studios. Mum loved music; the house was always filled with the sounds from Bach to Bob Dylan or Miles Davis. When we lived in Spain, Dad worked as a chef in the local restaurant and is now a fabulous cook as well as an artist. He would create these amazing dishes that were like works of art too and oh-so yummy!

In the first three years of business, you guys were barely scraping by. What made you keep going? We were young and determined to make it work. We loved creating and making objects. It was the love of creating that kept us going. Then, as now, we believed in what we were doing. My mum would always say to me “the measure of my success is my willingness to keep trying”. That has stuck with me throughout my life.

What has been your biggest pinch-yourself career moment? There have been so many pinnacles, from our recent GoMA exhibition in Brisbane, to the Object exhibition that travelled to Tokyo Designers Block and being asked to exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. We’ve sold pieces to Paul Smith and a custom-made chess set for Louis Vuitton. There are endless moments.

Why have you ensured everything is still designed and handmade in Australia? The way we design has always been very important us to be able to work as a studio. When Steve and I design a piece, we work the design to the very end. Decisions are made during the process and we need to be hands-on. Both Steve and I trained as artists in painting and drawing. The way we work with resin is like paint to us. To make our designs somewhere else would be like taking our studio away. Everything is made by hand in our Sydney studio and we are very proud of that. We can make sure that everything is made with care and that we actively support the environment and reduce emissions too.

Tell us about your New York store. And is it true: if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere? We love New York and have just moved and refitted our new store [at] Elizabeth Street, Nolita. We have been able to open a larger store with more space. Working with interior designer Iain Halliday was wonderful. He really understands DD. In the past two years, we’ve been putting a lot of work into the DNA of our brand and we have started to refit our stores to reflect this. We want our stores to be unexpected – to reflect our world. New York is not an easy city by any means, but yes, I think it’s true that you can make it anywhere if you can make it in NYC. It certainly keeps us on our toes.

Do you think daughter Camille will follow in your and Stephen’s footsteps in the art world? Camille is very creative. She is very interested in music and loves singing and playing piano. Take her anywhere and she will sing for you, but whatever she chooses, it will be her choice. We’ve always believed that you have to follow your heart. As parents, it’s our role to guide and support and nurture her on her journey, wherever that may take her.

“My husband and kids are very fussy so I tend to stick to boring, basic dishes, but I would like to get a bit more creative,” she confides on the eve of the masterclass with cooking sensation Ben O’Donoghue (most recognised from TV hit Surfing the Menu). “When I’ve tried a new recipe, my husband and the kids take one look at it and

say they don’t like it, even before they’ve tried it. So I tend to try to do little things differently to mix it up a bit.”But after a few hours with the enthusiastic celebrity chef where Renee, her friend Nicole, neighbour Bec and 17-year-old daughter Alanya received first-hand instruction, the home cook is willing to be a bit more daring. “Ben took us through, step-by-step, how to make Jambalaya (a Creole version of paella) and I enjoyed every minute of it,” Renee tells. “I’m certainly going to

give it a try at home and hopefully it will be kind of the same! It always looks better in the pictures!”While the girls had a laugh, they got some basic education too, like how to hold a knife correctly to get the best effect and how to make their own spices from scratch. “We loved every minute of it and the whole experience was certainly not something you do every day,” Renee tells. “We couldn’t stop smiling when we got home – it was just the best afternoon.”

Many people believe dental hygiene is only about cleaning teeth, and some are even unsure what a hygienist does. I often receive calls asking for

“just a clean” or “a quick polish of my teeth”. A hygienist is a dental professional who specialises in preventive oral health. At Casey Dentists, we like to provide a high standard of care and we offer many services other than your ‘standard clean’. As patients tend to see their hygienist more than their doctor, at Casey Dentists we like to give a complimentary blood pressure screening. Our hygienists will also check the acidity of your saliva, as the right pH balance will help to protect your teeth. If it’s too acidic the hygienist will go through your diet and lifestyle as this can have an impact. They will also do a soft tissue screen to detect any abnormalities or early signs of gingivitis (gum disease).

Both of our hygienists at Casey Dentists are highly trained in their field as well as patient care. It’s easy to say “floss every day” and “brush your teeth morning and night”, but this doesn’t work for all patients. Our hygienists will spend time with each patient and get to know their daily routine to help devise a home care plan that works for

them personally; for example, flossing every time the 6pm news is on.

Unfortunately, I speak to many patients who think their gums are fine as they have no pain or don’t understand that bleeding or red puffy gums is a sign of gum disease. If left untreated, this could progress to periodontal disease, which is the loss of bone around the teeth and, in turn, this could lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth. Many people believe that you can only lose a tooth through decay. Unfortunately, I have seen many patients lose a healthy virgin tooth through gum disease. Once patients have spent the time in our hygiene department they begin to understand the importance of regular hygiene visits.

I personally see our hygienist every six months. Although I have excellent oral hygiene, I do get a small build up of calculus on my lower teeth. I also rely on my hygienist to motivate me to floss. Although I am surrounded by floss every day, I do slip off the wagon every now and again, so the half-yearly appointments keep me on track. At my last hygiene appointment my hygienist also detected some demineralisation (the stage before

a cavity forms) on a few teeth. She recommended placing a product called Toothmousse on the areas, which helps to remineralise the teeth and stop a cavity forming. Without my regular visits to the hygiene department, this would have been left untreated, which would have caused pain, sensitivity and dental treatment on untouched teeth.

Maintaining your hygiene visits allows early detection of dental problems, which in turn, can help prevent expensive treatment plans. however – in order for them to function – the hearing aids need to be paired into a Bluetooth interface device which is usually worn around the neck. The interface device pairs to the Bluetooth device, such as mobile phone or television, and then sends the signal to the hearing aids. The devices are reasonably small – anywhere from mobile phone to a matchbox size – but they still can get in the way when bending over or moving around a lot. There are now hearing aids available which have the Bluetooth actually built into the hearing aid itself, alleviating the need to wear the interface device around the neck.

Another Bluetooth advancement set to be released in the next few months is Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) Bluetooth hearing aids. At present the smallest and most discreet Bluetooth hearing aids are only available in micro Behind-the-Ear (BTE) or the larger In-the-Canal (ITC) styles. This is due to the extra size needed to house the Bluetooth functions and a larger battery. With advancements in power conservation and smaller components, one particular brand has managed to engineer a CIC small enough to sit hidden entirely within

the canal and have Bluetooth function.Again, I believe within in next year or two

all hearing aid brands will have Bluetooth connectivity down the size of a CIC, and perhaps even have the Bluetooth interface built directly into the hearing aid. Up to 12 months ago the CIC was thought to be the smallest, most discreet device available on the market. A CIC sits right inside the ear canal at the first bend. Now devices have become smaller again, and there are hearing aids which actually sit further in around the second bend of the canal called an Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC). These developments are certainly exciting news for anyone who suffers hearing loss, as they directly translate to an improved quality of life.

The New Year brings with it a whole new range of hearing devices. It never fails to amaze me how quickly technology changes within the hearing industry. Up to a couple of months ago there were no waterproof hearing aids available. Now there are several models on the market which are not only waterproof, but also dust and shock proof. Some of the models can actually be used while swimming; such is the extent of the waterproofing. Furthermore, the shielding of the microphones to prevent water from entering into the mic portals has created the added benefit of significantly reducing wind noise. Wind noise in hearing aids is produced by wind passing over the top of the device’s microphones. By covering them to prevent water entering, it has resulted in a significant reduction in wind noise. I believe that within 12 to 24 months most hearing aids will eventually be either waterproof or extremely moisture resistant.

Another significant advancement taking place is the next generation of Bluetooth devices now beginning to enter the market. Bluetooth compatible hearing devices have been available for about 18 months now. They work very well,

OK. WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Let’s just say that you had a daughter. Let’s give her a name… I don’t know, how about Abbie? Let’s just say that she was school captain in her senior year and you had just, the weekend before, driven her to schoolies at Airlie Beach and hung around like a ‘Toolie’ for five hours while she and her friends got their ‘ID’. Let’s just add here that you may have bought this daughter of yours a new iPhone 4 because her old phone was not working anymore and she was, after all, such a good kid and responsible etc. Let’s just say that all happened.

OK. Now let’s say that you have come home from say, Canberra, after a very stressful week. Let’s put it in here that you may very well have brought home the flu. Can I suggest that you could have been so tired and sick that you could have made the inadvertent error of not taking your ridiculously small iPod Nano out of your pocket and put it through the wash, rendering it an ex-iPod.

Imagine, if you will, that the iPhone 4 was to replace a crappy phone and an old, battered iPod Touch. Imagine trying to look around for sources of music which would not incur additional cost to your already stretched music budget. Would you not, I mean really, look at said iPod Touch and suggest that seeing as your daughter had a new iPhone, she could perhaps give you the battered and almost broken old relic?

How would you approach the terms of engagement? Well, if it were me, and if this happened, I would be upfront and simply tell said daughter (the one for whom you just paid school fees for 12 years) that I’d put my iPod Nano through the wash and could I just have her old iPod Touch? That is how I would do it. Upfront, honest, open. But that’s just me.

Suppose said daughter stood there and just said “no”. No; after all these years. Assuming the love your daughter has for you, you may have simply reached for the iPod Touch in preparation. Then, suppose your daughter tells you it was not her fault, “I mean it was you who put yours through the wash”.

What would you do? Would you reason and try to help her understand that helping others and giving are their own rewards? Or would you go out to Troy Williams and buy the biggest kick arse iPod Classic money can buy? I don’t know what I would do. By the way, we went to Sydney after Christmas. I was listening to my new iPod Classic and Abbie was walking with her phone in one pocket and battered iPod Touch in the other.

aphne Thorogood has visited nursing homes and hospital wards with her dogs once a week for more than six years, but she

admits that few people know her name. “I’m just the person at the other end of the leash,” she laughs. “It’s all about Molly (her nine-and-a-half-year-old Jack Russell) and Harvey (her two-year-old German Shepherd) – they’re the ones who bring the smiles to the faces, the relief and the joy.”

Daphne is a schoolteacher Monday to Thursday, but dedicates her Fridays to the Delta Society, going to Masonic Care in the mornings with Harvey, followed by Townsville Hospital’s palliative care ward in the afternoons with Molly. While the focus is most certainly on the pooches, Daphne looks forward to the chats she has, often getting to know the families of elderly residents through their stories. “Some people don’t get a lot of visitors, so it’s important we’re consistently there every

week,” Daphne tells. “One lady told me that she woke up feeling really depressed, but then remembered Harvey and I were coming…that makes what we do very rewarding, and I’m so glad the dogs can brighten their lives.”

Daphne says Molly is the only one she knows who gets excited about going to the hospital – whining in the car, then bounding into the ward to greet the nurses. While she has witnessed many benefits for the patients; including calmness, contentment and even lower blood pressure when they’re patting Molly; she says the visits are just as appreciated by the nurses. “The way Molly goes in there with a wagging tail and a big smile on her face, she thinks she’s a member of staff! They all make a big fuss of her and she’s a welcome distraction for someone who’s either caring for chronically ill people all day or undergoing constant tests. Molly’s not asking for anything – she’s just there to make people happy, or – from her perspective – get pats!”

The Delta Society is always on the hunt for new blood to replace those who’ve moved away or retired. While pooches of any breed, size and age are accepted, once over nine years old, they need to be assessed and accredited every year (as opposed to the standard two-year requirement) to ensure they are still healthy and have the temperament to deal with multiple people. “The biggest thing we look for is that they’re interested in people and calm – we don’t want them jumping all over the place. They also need to be comfortable in new environments,” Daphne explains. “As for the handler, you need to be a people person too, but also love and communicate well with your dog – you’re a team, it’s just that it’s all about them!”

DEALING WITH GRIEF

The AFDA has compiled some useful information about understanding the grieving process and what you can do to help others:

How long does grief last?Grief responses are very individual. There are certain chemicals released, sometimes for months after the death, which is normal. These chemicals change the way we think and feel. Often a birthday, Christmas and the first anniversary of the death of a loved one are especially difficult times. It can take anywhere from two to five years to readjust.

Is it wrong to have conflicting feelings?When a loved one has suffered a long drawn out illness, it is common to feel a sense of relief when the person dies. In time you will feel sad at the loss of that person in your life and perhaps experience guilt at your earlier reaction of relief. Grief is like being on a roller coaster. When grieving, we need to be kind to ourselves and not judge our own behaviour.

What do I say to someone who’s grieving?People who are grieving need to be allowed to express their feelings in a safe environment.

They need to know you will not judge or devalue their feelings by using clichés such as “at least he didn’t suffer”. What you can say to a grieving person is something like “I wish I had the words to ease the pain you are going through right now”.

What can I do to help?In times of grief, people need acceptance of their emotions for however long it takes for them to heal. Providing help with practical tasks such as shopping, cooking or minding children is very helpful for the person grieving. Often the grieving person is afraid that others are ‘sick of them’ and will not ask for help. Phone them on a regular basis, with their permission, just to show you care.

Grief is a natural response to a loss, particularly the loss of a loved one, and we have several ways that we assist families to come to terms with that loss. BAMRacing has been founded to support riders who have the desire and potential to compete at events locally, interstate and nationally. The cycling team has already gained strong momentum, amassing support from other cyclists in the local community and businesses, and will kick-off the new season this month at the Cycling Australia Road National Championships in Victoria. The professional outfit is comprised of a diverse group of athletes, competing in both mountain biking and cycling. This year we’ll compete for the first time in the Queensland team’s Foodworks Series – an ongoing televised competition that plays out through the year in different locations around Brisbane. Each team member is committed to upholding professionalism and being competitive at the pointy end of all events we enter, whether it’s club races or national events.

Bringing this mix of riders together with our team partners and sponsors has not come without hard work and commitment. Of course, the state positioned best to benefit from this resource demand is Queensland because it has the most diverse resource projects and the most regionalised (dispersed) population of any other state. These projects create significant job opportunities that are spread across multiple locations relatively close to population centres, positioning Queensland well ahead of other states.

The demand for highly desirable lifestyle locations and employment opportunities is what has attracted people to Queensland, and it’s this increasing demand – coupled with other key factors – that sees the perfect storm for property striking the ground.

Another key driver of change in the property market this year is the growth of Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF). Increasingly people are seeing their super stagnate or decline with current market volatility and the fees. With the capacity to purchase property in super (property has proven to be a great safety net against volatile times), many are taking control of their

own future. The higher rental returns will make this an even more attractive option this year.

In 2010 we expected a fairly benign 2011, even before the disasters of the storm season, earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan and the ongoing crisis in Europe. The structural changes in the global economy and the massive demand from Asia will begin to have a significant impact on Australian and state economies. We expect specific regions of Queensland to benefit significantly from these changes and see 2012, particularly the later half, bringing a much improved picture to local property markets.

This is a storm for investors to enjoy.

Like all storms, this one begins in the upper atmosphere. To understand the change at a local level, we have to understand the significant and unprecedented change in the global economic space.

While there has been much focus in the media on the challenges in Europe and the US, it has taken away from the fact that these markets are becoming much less important to our economy. The rise of the internal demand in China and India will continue to increase the appetite for our resources. This demand is driven by these countries’ 1.2 billion people improving their standard of living by moving into new housing, buying electrical goods, purchasing cars, and the associated growing demand for electricity. This internal domestic demand is happening right across Asia, but especially in China and India: the world’s two most populous countries.

It is a journey that will take many years, or decades, and this means that Australia – a country that has one of the world’s largest deposits of these resources and is right on their doorsteps – is ideally positioned to benefit. To put this in perspective, the current investment in the mining sector as a percentage of GDP is

ere I was with tickets to the Melbourne Cup in one hand, an empty suitcase in the other and was totally paralysed about what to put in it. For years I’ve

been trying to stuff as many different outfits into my bag as I can. The old “what if” packing has cost me dearly over the years in excess baggage and chiropractor fees. Ask any taxi driver!

It’s not that I didn’t have anything to wear; I just didn’t like anything I had and we are talking Melbourne! I needed to pack for amazing restaurants, bars, museums, four seasons in a day and, of course, the Melbourne Cup.

My next thought was: I’m going to Melbourne so I will shop when I get there. But where would I go? What would I buy? What if I couldn’t find anything? Shopping in Melbourne created an immediate sense of panic. Girls are supposed to love shopping, and I do, but the idea of going from store-to-store searching for something I might like and will actually look good on me is overwhelming and enough to send me to the fridge for a glass of wine.

So I did what any modern girl would do… I ‘Googled it’. Typing in ‘shopping help Melbourne’, there was my answer: a personal stylist. But aren’t they for the rich and famous? Could I afford one? Put it down to the red wine and desperation, but I picked one and made contact. Next thing you know, there I was in Chadstone (the shopping mecca of Melbourne), standing outside Myer waiting for Cindy Newstead, my stylist and personal shopper (who just happened to be meeting with Sarah Jessica Parker the next day).

The three-hour personal shopper experience started with a quick get-to-know-you conversation over a great Melbourne coffee. I had done my homework as requested and had a brief about what I wanted to achieve.

I even brought along some pictures of myself wearing an assortment of items from my existing wardrobe, both good and bad. Within 15 minutes my stylist had me pegged, but little did I know what an amazing experience I was about to embark on.

It turns out I’m an ‘inverted triangle’; fashion speak for my body type. Who would of thought? Naomi Campbell, Teri Hatcher and Demi Moore are also inverted triangles. Great to know, as I can now steal some fashion tips from someone who shares the same body type instead of trying to dress like Cameron Diaz or Nicole Kidman (who are both rectangle body shapes, incidentally).

The first store was Veronika Maine, quickly followed by Kookai and Alannah Hill. The routine was the same. I bee-lined for the change rooms to undress while Cindy quickly and confidently gathered a selection of clothes and accessories for me to try on. There were items of clothing flying left, right and centre. Cindy moves fast, real fast.

Everything I tried on just magically worked. I couldn’t believe how easily she made this shopping thing look. The colours, the styles, the fit, the accessories; it was all working and I wanted to take it all home. To think that only a few hours earlier I would not have even taken a second look at them on the hanger.

Part of my brief was that I needed a wardrobe that had a lot of smart casual and could take me virtually anywhere in the world with all my travel, which I could dress up or dress down according to the situation. I wanted to mix and match every item and have just a few key pieces for special occasions. And of I course, I wanted everything to look and feel great at a price I could afford.

Cindy did not try to force any brands or designers’ labels on me; instead she matched the best shops that suited my body shape, style, personality, age and budget. The unexpected bonus of it all was that I received substantial discounts from the stores just by being with Cindy, which more than paid for the cost of my personal stylist experience.

Next thing I knew I was saying goodbye to Cindy and was barely able to carry all my shopping bags to the car. It had only been three hours and yet I had an entire new wardrobe and a new spring in my step. The only challenge now is deciding what outfit I will wear… I love them all!

A LOT OF PEOPLE PLEDGE TO GET FIT OR LOSE WEIGHT IN THE NEW YEAR. HOW CAN THEY START? Ask yourself what you want. Do you want to be a size 10? Run a marathon? Write it down – the more detail the better. Then make a plan to get there – it needs to be clear, concise and have a time base. Clear the pantry out and get rid of all the crap food that’s holding you back and get meals that are easy, quick, low in calories, and nutritious. Also make a commitment by telling your friends and family what you’re about to embark on and be absolutely gut-wrenchingly honest. Tell everyone what you’re doing, and then be a woman or man of your word.ARE THERE DAYS WHEN YOU LACK MOTIVATION? Of course: I don’t wake up at 5.30 in the morning when it’s raining and go ‘YAY! Let’s go on that 10km run!’ But I do get up and go into robot mode, or JFDI, which stands for ‘Just F**king Do it’, because I know it’s good for me. I know the results are fantastic and that when I’m done I’m going to feel like a rock star. I’m not this highly wound-up coiled spring full of motivation that people think I am – I’m a human being and, as a human being, I know motivation comes and goes. I believe in consistency.DO YOU WATCH YOURSELF TRAINING PEOPLE ON THE BIGGEST LOSER AND THINK ‘THAT WAS HARSH’? I don’t really think about it. I know my personality is multiple, in a good way (laughs), and I draw on the side of my personality that is assertive when I’m in the gym. It’s not me completely, but when I’m in the gym and training people it requires that you are pretty straight up and down, but I also need to be empathetic. Over the years everybody has always seen me as… this really tough drillmaster and in some ways I am, but there’s a whole lot more to it.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THE SHOW? That everyone, EVERYONE, can lose weight. They say they’ve tried everything and can’t do it. We say: really? Try this on. One week: bam! 10kg. Everyone can lose weight, everyone can get fit, everyone can exercise and eat well, and everyone can feel so much better about themselves, but you just need to work out where it is on your priority list.WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST SUCCESS TO-DATE? My 12-week body transformation program (an online coaching program supported by nutrition and workout plans and live support from Michelle)… I’ve had a dozen babies born out of the program from women who couldn’t get pregnant. For the next four months we’ll absorb new sights, cultures and climates as we travel throughout South America. Our trip will take in Machu Pichu and the Galapagos Islands. We’ll ride the Old Patagonian Express and pop in on Fidel in Cuba.

Then it’s on to Germany to attend the 25-year reunion of my dental school. We will visit family and friends and travel to the Baltic states and Iceland. We’ll take a cruise on Ireland’s River Shannon and sail the Greek Islands.

In spring I will be back in my adopted homeland – zigzagging through the outback, going “overseas” again to Tasmania and finally returning to Smile in January 2013.And you can be sure; I’ll be wearing a big smile!

AT the age of 26, Townsville-bred Ryan Elford is a confident career changer. In the past eight years he has qualified as a light vehicle mechanic and coached numerous people to weight loss and bodybuilding as their personal trainer. Now he is six months into enjoying his new role as an aviation firefighter. “There’s nothing better than being excited to go to work. I’ve never stopped learning,” The ‘Gen Y-er’ with a generously wide smile says. “I knew what my strengths were – being fit and active – so I started with what I was best at.” The boy from Grammar played Union for North Queensland and, after school, had a passion for tinkering under car bonnets with his brothers. Mechanics and personal training had their rewards for Ryan, but an invitation to see the fire station at Townsville Airport enlightened him to the mateship found working as a firey. “I visited about half a dozen times to see how badly I wanted this. I knew the three-month training would be intensive, but hanging out with an awesome bunch of guys, retaining peak fitness, and learning first aid and fire control; it couldn’t get any better.”

DOREEN Sapper crafted bespoke staircases and cabinetry in the artisan precinct of Berlin. She is now a resident of Australia, studying to be an IT specialist at Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE. In Germany, every working day was filled with the odour of maple and sawdust. Her fine motor skills saw her using nimble hand tools, sandpaper, and large power tools. “I worked as a trained cabinet maker in a small, very creative workshop from the age of 16. We had very old machines that you had to kick here and there to make them work. It was an old trade, supported by the wealthy.” Planning for a stable future for herself and her young son, Doreen’s interest was piqued by an advertisement to study computer systems. “I was always interested in computers and the freedom to work anywhere, including home. The only real challenge as a mature age student is the age gap in class. We get along well but it’s different.”When in a lab grappling with cabling networks, building computers and installing software, Doreen takes joy from her new profession. “IT networking is in its own way creative; planning what the servers will do is both logical and demands creativity.”

IN New Zealand, Tom Osmond was the kid who saved lambs from drowning, rescued possums from traps and carried his injured dog 10 kilometres for help. As a young muso he jumped at the chance to tour Australia in the band Mr President. “Those days were fun and we made lots of money but I never lost my love for animals,” he tells.A six-month stint became a new life in Australia, with Tom meeting Tracey, the band’s talented new singer, and starting a family. “Having never completed Year 11 or 12, I’d shelved my wish to become a vet. The music industry, once strong, became shaky, so Tracey thought that pursuing my dream was a great idea.” Told that he was too old and not smart enough to be a veterinarian, Tom was determined to prove he was truly hungry for the job. “I passed a three-week intensive chemistry course and first year Tropical Agricultural Science, but missed the first intake of Veterinary Science at James Cook University. I met the academic advisor who told me my grade point average wasn’t high enough.”He took two vet assistant jobs to build his experience (at Greencross Vet Clinic and at the farm on campus) and the same academic advisor, having witnessed Tom’s work ethic, spoke positively on his behalf to the selection committee. Accepted in the second intake and now four years on, Tom hasn’t looked back.

MARRIED at 19, Colleen Avery set-off for WA’s Pilbara region to live and work on a cattle station before moving to the Territory. “I studied horticulture and created a company where we produced mainly bananas for the next 11 years. I’m a country girl at heart. Our kids grew up there, playing in the dam and riding motorbikes.”As the kids got older, there were 200km return drives to Darwin on weekends and, with the eldest about to start high school, getting there would take three bus changes. Career opportunities brought the family to Townsville. “I threw myself into a job at Corrections and, knowing my farming background, my manager asked me to run a women’s work program taking the low security prisoners to Bowen… I can still drive through there now and see the jobs we did. We fenced the whole of PCYC, landscaped gardens and painted.” After seven years of working in Corrections, Colleen discovered that when she returned to the prison things had changed. “I didn’t want the regimented lifestyle anymore, or to be tied to a shopfront. I wanted to work for myself.”Now, as a bookkeeper, if Colleen wants to work on someone’s file until 10pm that’s fine… she’ll have the next day off to go fishing and swimming.

This means enterprises that are growing and busy, but not to the point where they can afford to employ another

staff member, can really benefit from having someone full time or part time assisting around the office, restaurant, store or workshop. We find that not many businesses know they can access this valuable resource.”

Atoma Sushi – a busy restaurant at The Willows – has two Capabilities staff enlisted who have worked there nearly a year. Owner Bobby Norman says while the initial appeal of employing Kim and Aaron was budget-related (due to the wage subsidies), he has gained reliable and vital team members for the bustling eatery that sees thousands of plates pass through the kitchen per day. “Kim and Aaron picked up the work quickly and are constantly improving… it’s got to the point where we’d be lost without them,” Bobby says.

Kylee says all employees are fully supported by the Capabilities team in their workplace, with an employment support officer making regular visits to ensure both employee and employer are happy.

he North Queensland region, in comparison to other areas in Australia, has a history of strong economic performance, driven by growth in a range of industry sectors such as mining, manufacturing, government services and defence, transport

and education. Townsville Enterprise (TEL) general manager of economic development Ross Contarino says this strong economic performance has invariably led to strong demand for skilled labour, with anecdotal reports from industry confirming that local businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to source appropriately skilled workers.

In a bid to address this problem, Ross reveals TEL is working in partnership with a range of agencies including Skills Queensland; the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR); James Cook University; TAFE and registered training organisations (RTOs) to create and implement a workforce development security strategy to address the current and future workforce needs for the region.

“Some may think it’s strange for TEL to be working in the skills and jobs security arena, but these factors are vital to our members and the economy of the region, so it’s imperative that we take a stand,” Ross explains.

“With a number of additional major projects about to commence within close proximity to the region – such as Abbot Point Coal Terminal in Bowen; Conquest Mine near Gumlu, and the Hancock Coal Alpha Mine in the Guildford Coal Galilee Basin – these workforce pressures are expected to intensify.”

The project is all about capitalising on the fact Townsville is located next to the North West Minerals Province, while addressing weaknesses in workforce development capacity. “It addresses the opportunities to grow existing and attract new minerals processing industries, to develop our mining support services and to build the capacity of local companies to take on major projects,” Ross highlights. “We are hoping that the project will help to counter the demand for skilled labour while helping local companies to remain competitive in an increasingly tight industry sector.”

FORTIFYING its name as ‘the apprentice and trainee specialists’ over 28 years, TORGAS is one of the largest industry-backed employers of apprentices and trainees in Queensland, matching candidates with employers across many different industries.

Not-for-profit group training organisations like TORGAS take the worry out of employing an apprentice or trainee.
