warmth he feels for the organization that he has been

part of all of his life first as a lifeguard at the Portage

YMCA during his high school years before becoming

program director after graduating from Indiana

University in 1990 By 2001 he would find himself as

CEO of that same Portage YMCA he enjoyed as a kid

and then in 2012 moved to become chief operating

office at the La Porte location In February 2015 the

Duneland Family YMCA was fortunate to welcome

Dave Kasarda as one of their own a leader who

embodies the YMCA mission of putting ldquoChristian

principles into practice through programs that build

healthy spirit mind and body for allrdquo

Kasarda says still philosophizing ldquoMy favorite part

of the mission is lsquofor allrsquo Wersquore not treadmills Wersquore

not a swim and gym Wersquore a cause-driven organization

that changes lives every day The Y is an extremely

strategic organization Our programs and services

are only vehicles to improve peoplersquos lives and those

people are all ages all walk of life all income levels

and I take pride in thatrdquo Kasarda says that it is the

service to the community that will be the focus of his

commitment ldquoListening to the communityrsquos needs

and having vision and having strategy that is what I

intend to do thatrsquos my methodology to lead to growthrdquo

he says

Kasarda is careful to point out that a YMCA is

comprised of its people which is what drew him to

the organizationrsquos location in Duneland ldquoHow do we

serve the mission of the organization in this

community what programs and services are needed

what volunteers are needed what staff are needed

thatrsquos what Irsquom focused on The YMCA is not about

buildings Itrsquos a movement of people It doesnrsquot matter

what the building looks like Some of the greatest Y

programs in the country arenrsquot even in buildings Do

we want a beautiful state-of-the-art building in

Duneland Yes and I would love to find sponsors to

make that happen But at the end of the day I want

people to say he was a visionary and his programs

were always high quality And therersquos always something

homey about being here at this Y and I feel good

about where wersquore heading At no time was there a

warm up session I entered the game and started to

playrdquo Kasarda says

of the YMCA but businesses and individuals

throughout the region He says ldquoThis Y for us to be

effective we need to partner with a variety of groups

and municipalities We have a large agenda and we

canrsquot do that by ourselves nor are we the experts in

all of those areas but we do bring tools to the table

and others bring tools to the table and the outcome

is a beautiful thing Y services are only good if they

are accessible to everybody and so we are strategically

putting the Y on the road and taking the Y to people

We have a strategic partnership with the Burns Harbor

Parks Department and we will have a backyard

swimming program because the rescue techniques

are very different in a backyard pool than at the YMCA

We will develop diabetes prevention programs

childhood obesity programs and we are on the verge

of starting Walkinrsquo Wednesdays where every

Wednesday from May through October bring your

stroller your dog your kid your shoes and get walking

with the community When I was at Portage we

partnered with churches chambers for-profit not-

for-profit the city Chesterton has embraced me very

warmly and all I do is listen I ask what would you

like to see in a Y and I brought that back and have

started a strategic plan to address thatrdquo

The way that the YMCA changes lives is evident

through the funding they provide for members to

participate in the services they need Kasarda says

ldquoIn 2014 the Duneland Family YMCA gave $109106

to 416 individuals in the form of direct financial

assistance for programs and services This is not

Monopoly money these are real dollars and that is

done on a $15 million operating budget so thatrsquos 10

percent These are women who without us are

challenged to go back to school go back to work and

raise children at the same time and donrsquot have enough

money to put their children in a high-quality childcare

program so there is guilt about leaving the child The

YMCA childcare and afterschool program is preparing

children for school and for life So these services help

parents but directly affect the lives of the childrenrdquo

Kasarda says that none of the services programs or

future plans would be possible without the partnerships

and volunteers who work tirelessly to support the

community ldquoThere are and have been amazing

volunteers not only in their abilities but in their

resources There have been some folks who have dug

pretty deep to not only grow the organization but

keep it where it is I am humbled by that because you

donrsquot hear them waving their flag in town They

continually think of others and thatrsquos what makes

communities strong and thatrsquos what makes Duneland

wonderful People are proud to be from here and I

am fortunate to be considered part of this community

Itrsquos heartwarming to merdquo he says

As a child through all stages of his life and now as a

CEO Dave Kasarda can say that he is a product of

the YMCA and he hopes to bring that growth and love

to others ldquoI can affect many more people in this

position I adored the hands-on years I had working

with kids But I knew if I could get to the folks who

really make change happen in policy then we can

start making change in the community Itrsquos such a

special place to so many people People of all ages

depending on where you grew up or when you grew

up the organization is very different for everybody

Working here is like being at Disneyland Irsquom that kid

in the swimming pool that doesnrsquot want to get out of

the pool at the end of open swimrdquo he says

The Indiana Dunes State Park is home to the 3 Dune Challenge (3DC) an adventurous 15-mile trail starting at trail 8 at the Nature Center The winding path will take you through breathtaking views and exhausting inclines At times yoursquoll be above the forest canopy and able to see for miles The hiking challenge is named for the trio of dunes called The Tremonts which highlight the trail Mt Jackson Mt Holden and

Mt Tom are each nearly two hundred feet above lake level At the top of all of them are great photo opportunities to remember your day and show off to your friends In-state park entry fees of $5 per person and out-of-state fees of $10 per person apply

The rugged self-guided 15-mile trail is the most difficult in the park and is intended for experienced physically-fit hikers

Some parts of the trail feature nearly 40-degree slopes making each step that much more well challenging In the sandy vertical climbs every two steps forward results in a step back Be realistic about your hiking ability If you get tired just take the shortcut back to the startingpoint There are plenty of other trails to enjoy

Lorelei Weimer executive director of Indiana Dunes Tourism says ldquoWhatrsquos been great about the 3DC is people of all ages have been doing it It gives people a fun activity to do by themselves as a couple as a family or as a group I have been amazed as to the number of little kids who have completed itrdquo

Sand Creek Country Club is more than a premier golf course but it also offers a host of other sporting options such as swimming tennis fitness and exercise Noreen Perl director of membership for Sand Creek says that there are new exciting plans this summer ldquoLast October we were acquired by Concert Golf Partners and this has been a huge added value for our members We are working on significant capital improvements to offer more benefits and amenities to the membership

finding a safe healthy active place for sports and recreation is easy at the Boys amp Girls Clubs and Ryan Smiley president of the Duneland chapter of the Boys amp Girls Club says they have been growing their facility to accommodate the increasing numbers ldquoWersquove been serving the needs of Chesterton youth for more than eight yearsrdquo says Smiley ldquoIn 2014 we purchased a building and did some renovations and opened on June 6 2014 at 521 W 1100N We own 937 acres and have plans to expand that facility to upwards of 25000 sq ft when finished We served 160 kids every day after school and we have three priority outcome areas including

academic success healthy lifestyles and good character and citizenshiprdquo he says

Specifically referencing healthy lifestyles Smiley says they offer a variety of ways for kids to get involved He says ldquoAs an organization we are committed to ensuring our members have ample active op on a daily basis We know stat speaking one of every three children in the United States are overweight or obese We have evidence-based programs that focus on engaging children in physical activity and 68 percent of our Duneland members report that they get 60 minutes or more play five

days a week We also provide a free healthy snack every day after school We talk about not only active lifestyles but healthy lifestyles through nutrition and we know that obesity affects all children regardless of race gender or income and so our focus is to engage kids in a fun way I like to call it exercise in disguise We have various programs in addition to just sports With our outdoor green space we have opportunity for outdoor soccer flag football through a countywide club league in the summer kickball and with our expansion we will offer youth basketball leagues indoor soccer floor hockeyrdquo

If the Indiana Dunes havenrsquot put Duneland on the map then certainly Chestertonrsquos European Market has Since the very beginning Chestertonrsquos European Market has brought crowds to the downtown each Saturday during the summer months for their produce cheese bread and art of every shape and size Chestertonrsquos European Market began in 2002 with just 28 vendors and today the market has grown to include nearly 100

vendors in downtown Chesterton every Saturday from May to October Chestertonrsquos European Market differs from farmers markets in other communities that may offer strictly produce Although vendors do typically come from within a 50 mile radius so it is still local they are not just farmers or gardeners they are also artisans such as chefs bread makers pastry chefs sculptors iron workers booksellers jewelry makers and more

PORTERrsquos PERFECT PinT The 2014 Porterrsquos Perfect Pint Fest brought in just under 1000 attendees to Porter and around 50 different breweries from as close as Chesterton to as far as California The festival is considered sold out at 1000 tickets which will easily

happen in October 2015 the 5th anniversary of the event ldquoMoney that is raised is very generously donated to the Porter Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Porter Park Department which totaled $16000 last year The money is used to offset expenses for training and equipment as well as materials for fire prevention education used in area schools as well as park programming throughout the year including the annual Easter Egg Hunt Summer Safety Fest Boo Bash Halloween Party Outdoor Movie Nights the Kids Summer Park Program and also for general improvements to the parksrdquo says

CHEsTERTOn aRT FaiR The Chesterton Art Fair was started over 56 years ago by a group of artists from Chicago It was such a successful event that they established the Artists and Craftsmen of Porter County which operates as the Chesterton Art Center today ldquoThe Fair has continued ever since then always held the first full weekend in Augustrdquo says Wendy Marciniak director of the Chesterton Art Center ldquoThough it has been located in several places for the past 20 years it has been held in

Hawthorne Park in Porter In this serene environment the fair attracts between 4000 and 6000 visitors annually Part of the reason for the regular high attendance is the fact that it is a juried fair with close to 100 of the very best artists in the country participating Mediums include painting drawing sculpture jewelry glass mixed media photography fiber artwear pottery glass metal and graphic and digital art There are usually artists from over 15 states who travel from all over to be in our fair Many offer demonstrations Di

snapping turtles please) Kids of all ages will have fun participating in free games and activities such as the Brick Toss patriotic poster contest bounce houses rock climbing wall karaoke and kiddie rides for toddlers There will be plenty of food vendors live music the Leroyrsquos Hot Stuff beer garden and a fireworks show set to patriotic music at duskrdquo she says

8TH annUal BaRK in THE PaRK On Saturday July 11th the Duneland Business Initiative Group will be sponsoring the 8th Annual Bark in the Park from 9 am to 3 pm in Thomas Centennial Park in downtown Chesterton Participate in contests such as ownerpet

started in Detroit in 1915 and they were initially

focused on business networking Then the organization

changed focus in 1919 to service In Indiana the focus

has always been on Rileyrsquos Childrenrsquos Hospital and

there is a whole wing of the hospital that has been

funded by Kiwanis Our mission is to improve the

lives of children and that has always been the mission

in Indiana In 1987 women were officially allowed into

Kiwanis itrsquos sad it wasnrsquot before that and the incoming

international president will be a woman Kiwanis is

now represented all over that world and that expansion

started in the 1960rdquo he says

He continues ldquoIn Duneland we started on March 1

1979 We have 16 members but hope to grow that

number this year We are small but mighty We

conduct a number of fundraisers and events throughout

the year Currently we do a golf outing each August

and this year it will be held on August 14th at the

Kiwanis the international service organization celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and organizers will host a weekend-long celebration for members and visitors at their headquarters in indianapolis on June 25th For 36 years the Duneland chapter of this service organization has been helping the community close to home and afar through the dedication of its members

says Juarez ldquoWe work with UNICEF to eliminate

neo-natal tetanus Every time a women gets this

inoculation every child she has will be immunized

from tetanus so every dollar raised goes toward saving

a life Last year we raised more than $1000 and this

year we will hopefully raise more than $2000 The

Eliminate Project is an international program and all

of our donations make a huge impactrdquo he says

Beginning in 2012 together with local Boy Scout

troops the Duneland Diamonds baseball team and

other volunteers the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club

provided funding and labor for the field ldquoThe first

year we put in about $12000 to get the field started
