Hello everyone. Congratulations to all the students who received awards at today’s Merit Assembly and thank you to all the parents and grandparents who attended. It certainly makes a difference to the kids when they can see mum and dad out there in the audience. I have included my speech from today to reinforce the key issues. “I speak to you today about Education and its importance in the 21st Century. It is very important that Principals and teachers lead the Education debate in their local communities because Education is going to be very different to when we went to school, and there is no going back to the good old days, to a system and an ethos that was

originally developed for the 19th Century Industrial Revolution. We are in the process of developing our next three year plan. We began the process by evaluating our previous plan. The new plan is to be built around the Melbourne Declaration which focuses on 21st Century learning and teaching. The Melbourne Declaration was the result of a forum held in Melbourne which engaged all the current great minds in education including John Hattie, Michael Fullan and many others, as well as all the key State and Federal administrators and leaders of education. It was a blue-print for the 21st Century and closely emulated the focus of the Gonski report. The goals developed focus on promoting equity and excel-lence, and students becoming successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active informed citizens. It put the onus on educa-tors to lead the learning of essential skills and abilities of students to be able to do things such as: Make sense of their world, have a sense of self-worth, self-awareness and personal identity in order to manage their own wellbeing; Develop personal values such as honesty, resilience, empathy and respect for others allowing them to act with moral and ethical integrity; Understand and acknowledge the value of indigenous cultures contributing to reconciliation. Have the confidence and capability for learning and success beyond school to pursue post- secondary vocational qualifications leading to rewarding and productive employment. Commit to national values of democracy, equity and justice and communicate this across cultures; Work for the common good sustaining natural and social environments. Learn in an environment that fosters equity reducing the effect of disadvantage and remoteness, promoting social cohesiveness. Promote diverse personalised learning and hold high expectations for their educational outcomes ie motivated to reach their full potential. Develop essential skills in literacy and numeracy and are creative users of technology. Think deeply and logically by being creative, innovative and resourceful.

Solve problems using a range of learning disciplines. Have the ability to plan, collaborate, work in a team and communicate ideas. At DCS we have already placed great importance on many of these goals, as they are not all necessarily new, and they are closely aligned to our school vision. The Department of Education have broadened these goals into 13 reforms which were introduced to schools last year and are being supported through a range of documents. We are expected to include evidence of these in our new school plans. You would have heard of some of these reforms such as Local Schools Local Decisions which allows schools to have a greater say in the staff they employ, the programs they run and how they spend their finances. Great Teaching Inspired Learning looks at improving teaching standards from trainees to experts. Local Management and Business Reform will support schools to manage all their own finances, improve their or-ganisation and utilise their data. Every Student Every School ensures that every student is supported with appropriate programs and teach-ing to reach their potential. Great Teaching Inspired Learning is an exceptional document as it looks at not only addressing the standards expected of our new teachers but also our current teachers. We are very lucky at DCS that the majority of our teachers are open to the new reforms and have begun imple-menting many aspects of them into their programs and into the classroom. It is the job of our leadership team to ensure that all of our teach-ers are doing their best in this implementation, and I can assure you that we will do the best we can to ensure this happens over the next three years. “ Congratulations to all of our Secondary excursion participants on your excellent behaviour and attitude. I have heard only wonderful com-ments about your manners and participation. I believe the White water rafting experience was sensational. This week is Exam Week for Years 7-10. I hope all students are studiously preparing for them. Enjoy your week.

We had a lot of fun last Friday on our Halloween Day. Thanks to everyone who joined in the fun! It is great to hear people talking and thinking about our Intensive Swimming Program in weeks 9 and 10. More information to follow. Kindergarten Orientation and the Earlybirds program begin this Thursday for the Kinder 2015 children. Thursday of Week 6 (13th Nov), we have a visiting performance in the school. It is called “The Right Balance” and is for all students K-10. There is a family concession price. Please find the permission note in this newsletter and send it in ASAP. Remember: Crunch—veges, fruit—CUT UP Sip—water Hats Performance note Mrs. Maria Abbott

Kindergarten: Welcome to Week 5. I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. This week in Jolly Phonics Kinder will

look at the letter g. When the letter g is followed by e, i or y it makes a ‘j’ sound as in giant and large. Our shared big book this week is Summer Night. In Maths our topics are Volume, Measuring Capacity, Investigating and Problem Solving. We are in full rehearsal mode for the school production—please remember all Kinder children need a pair of denim shorts for the night. Please send these in ASAP with their name on it in a named plastic bag. If you have any problems with this please let me know ASAP. Next week we have a third year prac student Luke Elsley starting on the class. The children are very much looking forward to his arrival. Please remember to read nightly and complete all homework. I was very im-pressed with the quality of the speeches the children delivered to the class last week. Thank you to all the parents for their help. Congratulations to Oliver Rookyard our student from last week and to Asha Russell and Tiarnie Batty who received merit certificates. Mrs. E. Yeo Year 1/2: Welcome to Week 5. Congratulations to the students who received awards at the Merit Assembly today.

Thank you to all parents and grandparents who attended the assembly. I was very proud of the class last week. Every child presented a speech to the class. What a great achievement. Thanks to parents/carers for helping the children with this task. This week in Spelling Year 1 will study the ‘ir’sound as in shirt and girl. Year 2 will study the ‘ture’ suffix as in nature, adventure. In Maths Year 1 will learn about Capacity using blocks, Estimating Capacity and Ordering Capacity. Year 2 will study Capacity Displacement and complete some revision. We nearly have all the costumes sorted for our performance. We are waiting on a few boys to bring their t-shirts in. All stu-dents will be wearing joggers on the night. Practices are going well and we should be stars on the night! Homework and read-ers will continue for the next few weeks so keep working hard on these. Have a great week. Mrs. M Abbott

Our No Hat—Play In The Shade policy is in force for Term 4. Children without a hat will play under the covered area during recess and lunch. Please make sure hats are labelled with your child’s name. Years 4-6 will complete the Tell Them From Me student survey this week. This survey gives us feedback on student life at our school, com-pared with other schools, and will be used in our planning of school targets for 2015 and beyond. Primary Swimming began last Friday for all children in Year 3-6, and will continue this week. Thankyou for returning permission notes prompt-ly. Children will need their swimmers, towel, hat and sunscreen. Children are not permitted to walk back to school with wet clothing, and must change back into school uniform before returning to school. Children may buy from the pool canteen after swimming but we ask for a $2 limit for each child. A final reminder that applications for Year 5 children for consideration for entry to a selective high school in 2016 are now open. These can be completed online and are required by mid-November. For more information please contact me at school, or visit www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement . As always, if you have anything to discuss, please contact me at school. Enjoy your week. Mr. Joel Wilson—Assistant Principal Primary

Year 2/3: Hello everyone. Congratulations to all award winners at today’s Merit Assembly. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the

achievements of our classmates and friends with the whole school. Also, well done to our Year 2 students for presenting their speeches last week. They did a fabulous job! Year 3 will be given their public speaking topics next week. In class this week, students will be revising earlier work on writing Procedures. In HSIE, we look at the local community and what services are on offer, and in Maths, Year 3 will continue their study of fractions and look at number patterns. This week’s news topic is ‘Local News’. Have a great week.

Mr. Ben Kline

Year 4/5: Hello and welcome everyone to Week 5! A huge congratulations to all the award winners at today’s Whole School Assembly!

It is a just reward for the effort you have put in so far this term. Last week we started our Primary Sport Swimming at the pool. Our first day was purely to get organised into swimming ability groups. However, it was disappointing to see some students who did not have swimmers or a permission note. The Local Council still requires students to pay a $3 entry fee regardless of whether your child swims or not. So make the most of the hot weather and encourage your child to jump in and swim! In the next two weeks we have important items to be completed. Firstly, Semester 2 diagnostic assessments for Spelling and Reading Comprehension. Secondly, the Year 4/5 Production Rehearsals are going to ramp up over the next few weeks. The students will be asking people at home for help to organise costumes (they do not need to be extravagant… please stick to the op shops such as Vinnies where you can always find a bargain!). And lastly, we have started our H.S.I.E projects on State and Federal Government in class. The students are encouraged to take their ‘grid’ home to work on it further. Have a great week everybody! Mr A.Honeysett

Year 5/6: Class assessments begin this week. They will be in spelling, grammar and writing. We are also continuing our work on the

school production throughout the week. Less than a month to go now! Year 5 maths are studying probability this week and we are revising our times tables daily with sing-a-longs!
