Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!! It’s Masters week! I am sure most

of you true golfers are like me and anticipate this week all winter.

It’s signals the start of our golf season here in Oklahoma. You

non-true golfers even usually get the clubs out of the attic and put

them out in the rain to get a good cleaning, then come out and hack

it all over the place. We are glad to have you! Speaking of hacking it

all over the place, Tiger Woods will be playing in the Masters this

year. How exciting. Hope he makes the cut.

Well the greens have healed up nicely and we are going to

begin our bi-weekly cultural practices this week. This includes

verti-cutting the green to remove excess thatch. Thatch is dead grass

leaves and stems that build up over time and make greens soft and

spongy. We then follow that up with a light top dressing of sand.

This practice helps prevent thatch, firm up the greens, and in

general helps the health of the grass. This is also the time of year we

start spraying greens bi-weekly. We apply preventative fungicides

and spoon feed the greens with fertilizer and growth regulator. The

roller will go into high gear this time of year. Our goal is to have

healthy, firm, fast, and consistent greens. We will also begin

aerifying collars, fairways, and tees. We will do these when it will

affect play the least.

I would like to bring to your attention what I believe is a great

opportunity to be able to play some of the nicest courses in the state.

As part of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America

(GCSAA), the Environmental Institute for Golf(EIFG), is having

their annual Rounds for Research auction. Local courses donate

rounds at their course and then you can go online and bid to win

rounds at some of the nicest courses in the state. I am proud to say

we have done our part and donated rounds to this worthy cause.

EIFG does research to help us Superintendents be more

environmentally friendly. The Auction dates are April 30-May 6,

2018. Please check it out and help keep the government out of our

business.

Thanks

Daniel Mills, GCS

It’s spring time in Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains.

Having the ability to control your trajectory both into the wind and downwind can

help you navigate the golf course and control your distances better.

Trackman has proven to be helpful showing instructors how headwinds and

tailwinds effect the ball differently. As we play in higher winds, the ball is

increasingly more effected into the wind compared to down wind. All things

being equal, if you hit a shot into a 25 mph wind the distance loss is nearly double

to that of a shot hit with a 25 mph tailwind.

To decrease some of the distance loss when hitting into a headwind most players

put the ball back in their stance, swing aggressively and hit down more in attempt

to flatten the trajectory. This actually has a adverse effect. When you move the

ball back in your stance and hit down more you add spin to the ball. Swinging

harder adds speed which increases the height of the shot creating a larger loss of

distance.

To best control your distance and lessen the effect of a headwind, players should

select a lower lofted club and decrease the swing speed to better control the

trajectory. The next time you are on the range, try to hit a 7 iron and land the ball

half of your normal distance. You will notice how the flight of the ball decreases

and how much easier it is to control your distance and direction.

If you need help hitting flighted shots, stop by the pro shop and ask YOUR golf

professionals for some help.
