This profile is one of 30 Community Health Partnership (CHP) area profiles compiled by the Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO) Team at the Information Services Division (ISD) of NHS National Services Scotland. The profiles comprise 61 indicators of health (e.g. ill-health & injury and mortality) and wider determinants of health (e.g. education, employment & prosperity and environment). They build on the 2004 community health profiles previously published by NHS Health Scotland.

Population Profile

Mortality

Substance Use

Crime and Environment

Dumfries & Galloway CHP has an estimated total population of 148,030. The percentage of the population who are of working age is the second lowest of the 40 CHPs in Scotland. The percentage aged 65 and over is the highest of any CHP. Male and female life expectancies are better than the Scotland average. The area has a 0.7% ethnic minority population (2001 Census), which is significantly lower than the Scotland average (2.0%).

All-cause mortality (all ages), and the mortality rate from cancer (under-75s), are significantly better than the Scotland average. Early mortality from heart disease is the second lowest of any CHP.

An estimated 25.6% of adults smoke, compared to 27.3% in Scotland as a whole. There have been 143 alcohol related deaths in the last five years, a death rate significantly better than (below) the Scotland average. The proportion of the population hospitalised for alcohol related and attributable causes is amongst the lowest of any CHP. The proportion of the population hospitalised for drug related conditions is also better than average, with 211 patients discharged from hospital over the last three years.

The CHP has a significantly better (lower) than average incidence of cancer. For patients with heart disease and stroke, emergency admission patients, and multiple admission patients aged 65 years and over, the proportions of the population hospitalised are significantly better than the Scotland average. In contrast, the road traffic accident casualty rate is significantly worse than the Scotland average. Expected years of life in good health are 68.8 for males and 72.3 for females (Scotland 66.3 and 70.2 respectively). With the exception of adults with ‘limiting long-term illness’ (2001 Census) where the CHP figure is 20.6% compared to a Scotland average of 20.3%, the area is either significantly better than, or not significantly different to, Scotland on all mental health & function indicators.

In Dumfries & Galloway CHP, 46.0% of older people with intensive care needs are cared for at home, rather than in care homes or geriatric long-stay hospital beds (Scotland 29.2%). At the 2001 Census, lone pensioner households accounted for 16.6% of total households (Scotland 15.0%), and 3.7% of the population were providing unpaid care for over 20 hours per week (Scotland 3.5%).

Dumfries and Galloway CHP has a significantly better (lower) than average percentage of people living in the 15% ‘most deprived’ areas of Scotland. This is reflected in the education, employment & prosperity indicators, with the area rating significantly better than, or not significantly different to, the Scotland average on all indicators.

The crime rate is significantly better (lower) than the Scotland average, and the assault hospital patient rate is better (lower) than average. Fewer than 9% of the population live within 500m of a derelict site (Scotland 27.3%). This is a partly rural CHP, with 38.5% of the population living in the 15% ‘most access deprived’ areas in Scotland (Scotland average 15.0%).

The percentage of mothers smoking during pregnancy is slightly worse than average, and the percentage of babies exclusively breastfed is significantly worse (lower) than average (25.4%, compared to 27.1%). However, immunisation uptake rates at 24 months, unintentional injuries in children in the home, and the percentage of low birthweight babies, are all significantly better than the Scotland average.

Notes:

1. For presentational purposes, these indicators have been arbitrarily assigned to ‘worse’ if the proportion is below the Scottish average. 2. Three-year combined number, and 3-year average annual measure.

3. Five-year combined number, and 5-year average annual measure. 4. Data available down to local authority level only.

Key: n/a= data not available, or cannot be calculated. In addition, where the figures are based on small numbers, range rather than actual number is shown (see technical report for disclosure

rules). cr = crude rate per 100,000 population; cr2 = crude rate per 1,000 population; sr = age-sex standardised rate per 100,000 population; yrs = years; % = percent; mean = average.

See the detailed Definitions and Sources table for indicator information and Technical Report (on the web) for further guidance on interpreting the spine.
