PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2016
E ndowing L ibr ar y E xc e l l en c e fo r To m or r ow
The year 2015 was a milestone: the library’s 125th anniversary, and the Foundation’s 25th year! We invited the community to agrand celebration at The Depot, emceed by Greater Downtown Council President Kristi Stokes. Mayor Don Ness, future mayorEmily Larson, Chamber of Commerce President David Ross, and author Chris Monroe told their own stories of the differencethe library has made in their lives. The Foundation announced its ambitious goal to raise $100,000 by year’s end.
In the spring, the Foundation partnered with Miller Hill Mall and JohnsonCarpet One for an unprecedented eight weeks ofchildren’s literacy programs at the mall. Linda LeGarde Grover was the featured author for One Book Northland . In June, the
library offered Fine Forgiveness, a Foundation-supported initiative that brought as many as 1,000 people back to the library.
Summer brought new opportunities for the Foundation to support the library. Children who signed up for the summer readingprogram received a free library t-shirt. Grammy Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers performed on the library’s outdoorstage as part of the multi-week Kaleidoscope children’s program, with more than 600 people in attendance each week. Thursday eveningsummer concerts returned to the library stage. Food Truck Fridays, spearheaded by the Foundation, drew lunchtime crowds to the library
In September, 150 guests streamed into the Library for the Foundation’s 4th annual fundraiser, Learning & Libations at the Library . It was adelicious and enjoyable evening to learn and mingle in the library.
Most rewarding—and most central to our mission—we raised $146,000, 46% more than our goal!
The support of donors like you made all of these good things happen. As you may know, the Foundation and the Friends of the Library pro
only steady funding for library programming and events. Virtually everything on the library’s busy schedule is made possible by the Foundaand the Friends organizations. The Foundation annually gives up to 80% of its endowment earnings to the library.
This was also a year of growth for the Foundation. We invested in our organization: we expanded our board of directors, hired an Executive Director, and employed a consultant to help us increase organizational capacity and raise our profile. Inthe midst of this year of transition, we were able, through a combination of endowment earnings, earmarked gifts, and grants,to contribute more than $56,000 to the library as well as enhance the endowment. Robust communities must have robustlibraries. With your help, all of the Foundation’s work in 2015 strengthened our library.
With your support, the Foundation will continue to do its part to make the Duluth Public Library a civic and culturalhub in our community for another 125 years.

THE FAMILY THAT READS TOGETHER,STAYS TOGETHERSince 1998, the Casperson family has maintained a family book club. Even as some moved away fromDuluth, the book conversation continued online. The book club not only kept the family connected byreading and discussing a book each quarter; family members also competed with each other to seewho could read the most book pages each year. The winner’s name was inscribed on a cup made of
silver. For the first seven years, only one name, June Casperson, who cultivated her children’s loveof reading, appeared on the cup. That cup was retired in 2005, when June became too ill to read.Since then, a new cup has consistently featured son Chris Casperson’s name. June died in 2009.
In 2015, the family bookclub’s cumulativedonations to theFoundation reached$10,000. The club washonored by a plaque
mounted on the AndrewCarnegie section of theFoundation donor wall inthe downtown library. This recognition coincided with fatherCarl Casperson’s 90th birthday.
“There are all kinds of book clubs,” observed Carl.“But few are centered on a family.”

Robin Ongaro believed in enriching children’slives through literature. She was a voraciousreader from her earliest days, sneaking a bookunder the covers when she was supposed to
be asleep, and she maintained that passionthroughout her life. Robin raised her daughter,
Amy Zontelli, to love books. After hergranddaughter, Lily Zontelli, was born, Robinwas often seen taking Lily to the library orsitting with Lily in her arms, reading to her. Notsurprisingly, Lily, too, became a reader. Thepassion Robin had for books and ideas igniteda literary passion in the next two generationsof her family.
Robin died in 2012, but her legacy continues. Her husband, Frank Ongaro, and herfriends, including Ann Glumac, created the Robin Ongaro Child Nutrition and LiteracyFoundation—Robin’s Fund, for short—to honor Robin’s life and exemplify her beliefthat it is the sacred responsibility of the community to nurture children’s bodies andchildren’s minds. Frank wanted to “not just honor her memory but support causes shewas passionate about.”
In 2015, Robin’s Fund gave a generous donation to the Duluth Library Foundation inRobin’s memory to benefit children’s and teen literacy. It was a wonderful tribute to
Robin, a bibliophile and vibrant spirit. It embodied a cause that she loved: inspiringchildren to read.

F I N A N C I A L R E P ODROP & G IVE ME 20MINUTES OF READING A DAY!In 2015, children andadults flocked to the
Miller Hill Mall forchildren’s literacyevents. For eight weeksin a row, children wereinvited to gather andread with a therapydog, draw with an artist, write with an author, read and sing withprinces and princesses, write poetry, read withthe University ofMinnesota hockey team, and read with a policeofficer, then take a tour of his squad car—all in themall! Each time, kids were encouraged to take afree book home with them.
The highlight of the events was the grand finale, emceed by television anchor Dan Hanger. Thechildren all received free “Cat in the Hat” hats andvisited seven literacy activity stations. Princes and
princesses sang songs from “Frozen.” Mayor DonNess read to the children. A grand prize drawingwas held. It was a wonderful day.
