RESTAURANT Be InSpired by our new lunch menu A late Neolithic henge, or large circu- lar enclosure, has been discovered in Carranstown, Duleek, by archaeol- ogists. The find was made using Lidar airborne laser imag- ing, and shows that the henge is 170 me- ters long. The henge may have been used as a cere- monial site, much like an arena, and may have been sea- sonal in use. There are approximately 25-30 henges of this kind in Ireland, the most famous being at Ballyna- hatty near Belfast. The Carranstown henge is an important site with no similar enclosure being excavated in Ireland for over 40 years. It is most likely late Neolithic, dat- ing from about c. 2500 BC. Leading the archaeology team is Dr Steve Davis of UCD, who is planning a excavational dig on the site. ‘Our next step would be to put a small exca- vation in here and I'm sug- gesting that the Royal Irish Academy would seek funding from the Dept of the Environ- ment for a excavation grant scheme,’ said Dr Davis. Cllr Sharon Keogan believes that this find could be a major tourist draw for Duleek. ‘I'm very excited by this very his- torical site find in Car- ranstown, Duleek, as it is almost as old as Newgrange! There is scope for this area to seek further funding should we wish this in the future to be a tourist attraction in Duleek.’ The lidar survey also revealed a wealth of other new monuments and possible mon- uments (in excess of 65), including previously un- recorded em- banked enclosures at Carranstown, Co. Meath and in Dowth townland. With three henges/embanked enclosures and the remarkable im- ages of the cham- ber and passage these discoveries rewrite the narra- tive of Brú na Bóinne, and demonstrate the huge potential of lidar in both ar- chaeological prospection and landscape ar- chaeology, according to Dr Davis. Julianstown scooped no less than threeprizes at Meath County Council’s recent‘Pride of Place’ awards! This is truly fitting recognition for thework carried out by and inspired by thehardworking Tidy Towns committee. The awards were for Best ApproachRoad, a Heritage Award for the conser-vation work carried out in the woods onthe south side of the village, and bestYouth Project for their ‘Tree Listeners’project. When cleaning up the woods which weretotally overgrown with ivy, brambles andlitter, the group came up with the idea ofcreating poetry paths and plaques withlines of poetry written by pupils at thenearby Whitecross primary school.

Principal, Liam Burke, came on boardand funded two poetry facilitators towork with pupils in 3rd-6th classes. Eachclass had three sessions including visitsto the woods where they put on their ‘lis-tening ears’ to listen, look, touch, hearand feel the sounds, smells and colours ofthe woods, trees, earth and animalsArmed with copies and pencils to jotdown their thoughts on site, the childrenthen chose a tree to hug and whisper toit and to listen out for its answering whis-per in reply. Their creativity was amaz-ing!Many have submitted poetry to theschool’s literary competition, and a vari-ety of poetry will be engraved on plaquesin the woods for all to enjoy.

Staceyellen Murray from Millrace, Duleek, scooped firstprize for special effects at the Pro Beauty Show in the RDS.She was thrilled to be named the overall winner for her evilCare Bear creation at the Warpaint Competition in theshow.‘I was absolutely over the moon to win,’ said Staceyellen, agraduate of the Avant Garde Make Up Academy inDrogheda.Staceyellen had five hours on site to complete her lookunder the eagle eyes of the judges. ‘My bear was originallycalled Tenderheart but my concept was that he was thrownon a bonfire at Halloween, and then came back every yearto get revenge by ripping people’s hearts out.’ Staceyellenalso created the Care Bear costume for the event, which wasworn by her friend Lorraine Reilly.Stacey currently works as a freelance beauty artist, saysthat she learned everything about make up at Avant Garde, from catwalk make up to airbrushing, as well as special effects. She plans to continuein this line of work, and eventually hopes to work as a special effects artist for films.

Gormanston Community Associationwas behind the recent beach clean-upwhich saw volunteers tidy up the3km beach area. Over the summerthey hold a twice-monthly clean up,and over the winter it’s done once amonth on the first Saturday, fromOctober to April. The beach extendsfrom the Meath/Dublin border atDelvin to Ben Head near Mosney.Gormanston beach is unique in thatthere is no beach-front developmentor housing, or even paved parking.Launching the winter clean-up pro-gramme was Stamullen historianBrendan Matthews who gave a most

interesting talk about the 5,000 yearhistory of the Delvin River area, from its earliest Neolithic settlers, tothe arrival of St Patrick and his suc-cessor St Benignus, and Gor-manston’s Black & Tan andRepublican incidents.Meath County Council provided thecommunity with gloves, pickers, black bags and a lock-up skip. Withthe aid of the Gormanston Text Alertand input from regular beach walk-ers, this community is keeping thebeach clean and litter-free, and reg-ularly liaise with the Gardai and Lit-ter Wardens.

Duleek Meals on Wheels needs yourhelp! Due to unforeseen circumstancesthere is a shortfall in their funding thisyear, so the group is looking for thecommunity to row in behind them andassist with fundraising? Volunteers arealso required for driving and foodpreparation roles. This is such an important lifeline to thevulnerable people of the localcommunity. Meals are supplied to theelderly and sick who are unable toprovide for themselves in their own

homes. The objective is to help maintain andsupport these people of ourcommunity at home for as long aspossible and to give back something tothose who have given so much to ourcommunity over the years. They maybe a family member of yours, aneighbour, or somebody you knew atwork or through hobbies or activities. They may have helped you or yourgroup in the past. Christmas memoriesDo you remember Christmas like it used to be in rural Ireland? If so, you will love the new showby Anthony O’Boyle, Christmas Memories, a blend of storytelling and song which has been de-scribed as ‘Theatre of the Hearth’.Ratoath resident Anthony, will perform his show in The Solstice Theatre, Navan, on Tuesday 8December, and in Ashbourne GAA club on Saturday 12 December. Christmas Memories is setin a small village in the West of Ireland, and Anthony tells tales interspersed with comedy andpathos with vocal accompaniment by Patricia Roynane and Ailbe Travers. It’s a unique showrecounting an era that’s now past. It’s funny and it’s sad, and it will certainly entertain you!

Donore arson attacksA series of arson attacks on premisesin Donore has Gardaí in Ashbourneseeking witnesses to any unusual ac-tivity in the area. Vandalism or row-dyism has never been a problem inDonore before, and now there havebeen four fires in three weeks!First of all were two fires at the pri-mary school, then a hay barn full ofstraw, then the garden of a house atSt Mary’s Cottages which could havebeen extremely serious.Substantial damage was caused at theschool when two pre-fabs and a num-ber of fire doors were set on fire. Thefollowing night a second fire was

started at the same location. CllrSharon Keogan has condemned theattacks saying, ‘It’s such a shame tosee this happening in Donore with allthe wonderful work principal RuthDaly is doing there with the help ofher staff and the building works andwinning the Dulux paint competi-tion.’‘There has been lots of work done onthe school over the years and it’slooking great at the moment. Exceptthat thugs are damaging it, which isvery distressing for the pupils,’ saidprincipal Ruth Daly. ‘Money that weshould be spending on enhancing ed-

ucational experiences for the childrenis now being spent on security meas-ures.’At the straw fire, houses in the vicin-ity were affected by smoke damage. At St Mary’s Cottages, the fire wasset next to an oil tank which couldhave resulted in a tragic situation hadit caught fire. If anybody has any in-formation on these events, please ringAshbourne Gardai on 01-8010600.A meeting to discuss the increasingcriminality in the Donore area hasbeen called for Thursday 12 Novem-ber at 8.30pm in Donore CommunityHall. All welcome to attend.

Breadman retiresAfter 53 years breadman BennyHall has retired! The popularbreadman who’s route includedStamullen, Garristown, Ard-cath, Clonalvy, and district, willbe sorely missed by young andold alike. In fact, his popularitywas such that Denise Ryan(originally from Garristown andnow living in Orange County,California) posted this messageon Facebook which generated alarge number of responses andgood wishes:‘Benny the Breadman hasstopped delivering a loaf ofbread every Tuesday and Satur-day to my parents’ front door.Benny never left a bill and mymam often had to chase himdown the road with the money...Which sometimes went on forup to 6 months!! He showed up

faithfully hail, rain or snowwith a smile and a loaf. Some-how Benny made a nice livingand has now retired. He re-cently went on his first interna-tional trip (Russia). Long live, and God bless Benny!!! Manythanks for over 50 years ofbread delivery it's certainly theend of an era.’One local lady, Ruth Divilly, posted that she is in fact,Benny’s daughter and that shewill pass on the comments, say-ing, ’Benny is my Dad, I will besure to pass on all your goodwishes. He genuinely enjoyedhis job over the last 55yrs &that is in no small part due tothe lovely customers he had. He's settling into retirementwell & enjoying a well earnedrest.’

Keogan Out & About

DuleekDuleek Courthouse will hopefully be complete just beforeChristmas. It is hoped to develop this building space into anArts, Cultural & Tourism Centre for the Village of Duleek.Meeting rooms will be available and I hope to have contactdetails for booking in the next edition. Thanks to Duleek Revival Programme, we should expect 6 newpieces of outdoor gym equipment, 4 new bench seatings andmuch need public bins. The outdoor gym equipment will beplaced on the left hand side on Station Road just outside FrRyan Park where there already is a lovely green space and stonefloral area. It will be there for the use of everyone, so pleasetake care of these pieces. They belong to all of us for the use ofall the residents and visitors to our village. Cllr McKee and myself have done a housing estate assessmentwith regard to ‘Children at Play’ signs and also some trafficcalming measures, that we hope to implement shortly inconjunction with Meath County Council. More news on this inthe next edition. Repairs have taken place on the bridge on Station Road, following an accident there. As we are preparing the budgets for the coming year, I shall beseeking funding for road resurfacing of Main Street & StationRoad. I hope also to get funding for public lighting out theNavan Road towards the Gaelic football pitch. I welcome your feedback on turning Abbeylands into a one-waytraffic system please. I think this would have a considerablepositive solution to traffic on this through housing estate. I have also asked the Housing Director of Meath CountyCouncil about in-fill social housing at Fr Ryan Park, plenty ofspace here, there is no doubt we need more housing and thisarea already has a considerable amount of green space outsideof that area. I will keep you all updated on any progress.

StamullenStill waiting on the ESB to turn on the pedestrian light atGough's Corner. At our Meath county Council meeting in Navan I was delightedto get a commitment from the economic department under thevariation of the County Development Plan 2013-2019 to thevillage of Stamullen. These changes will effectively fast-forwardaccess from Stamullen Business Park and the village ofStamullen. This is a key tennet of the Meath Economic Strategy. This is great news for the village of Stamullen and I've no doubtthis will be welcomed by both the existing residential andbusiness community. It will allow quicker access for residencesonto the M1 and certainty opens that area hugely for more jobsfor the people of Stamullen and that immediate area. There isno doubt that any future development of industrial, retail andresidential areas in the Stamullen region, will take into accountgreen spaces, leisure facilities, community facilities and mostdefinitely a playground to service all the needs of thecommunity. But, with this variation I feel we are moving in theright direction to making this happen. I'm delighted to beworking alongside a number of community activists dedicatedto assist in the overall development of Stamullen. I would liketo hold a public meeting with all community leaders inStamullen to make sure, all your needs are met in thedevelopment of Stamullen. We need to hear from you, so makesure your voice gets heard. I also understand Stamullen will be getting more outdoor publicbins in the coming month.

DonoreI managed to secure the bollards at the corner beside the shopand I'm assured the council will be down in the coming weeksto repair and replace some to the footpaths around the schoolarea. What would you think about a footpath from Donore outtowards Kelly's Cross, that's out towards Duleek, just beforeyou turn for Irish Cement?I'm also investigating the Council-owned land in Donore forprovision of a playground or a public park area. We need to dosomething with it, no point leaving it there doing nothing. I willlook into the provision of a public waste bin for the area as well.

l As chairperson of the Indaver community fund, I wouldencourage every single community group to apply for funding. It would be lovely to see community groups come together witha major infrastructural project for the overall benefit of all thecommunity. These are the type of projects that we as acommittee love to support. It's great to see various committeesand groups working side by side for the overall benefit of theircommunity.

l As one of 3 councillors on the Local CommunityDevelopment Committee, we are working with Meathpartnership for the delivery of the Leader Programme inMeath. There is just over €6.9 million in this fund, so pleaseput in an expression of interest before 20 November. 75% andin some hard to reach communities it can be 100% funding isavailable. These are the categories for consideration:

l Rural tourism/enterprise support for micro-enterprises andSMEs/village renewal and investment in ruraltowns/broadband and ICT Infrastructure/festivals, culture andheritage/rural youth/social inclusion actions to promote qualityof life in rural areas/support for artisan and local foodproducers/craft and the creative sector, environmental actionsat both commercial and community level, on-farmdiversification and supports for adding value to local products.

l It's very clear to me that we can achieve so much if we areall work together. If any community group would like ameeting with me before 20 November, please call my secretaryAmanda on 041-9880523 to make an appointment.

l I'm all over the place with the upcoming general election! My election manager Cllr Nick Killian has me out on the roadall the time. Those wishing to see me in Duleek can do soMonday, Wednesday & Friday or I'm in Ratoath on Tues &Thursdays.

l Keep well, keep safe and keep a close eye out for your elderlyneighbours please.
