Victoria Day is a Canadian statutory holiday in every province and territory. It honours Queen Victoria's birthday and it marks the unofficial start of the cottage season. ~ welcome back to all our summer people. In calling us to discipleship, Jesus seeks more from us than just having a baptismal certificate or taking a seat at Mass each week. He sends us forth to take on His work of healing, of reconciliation, of bringing others to God. By imitating His simple compassion, Christ promises that we can transform the lives of the hurting, lost, and despairing. By becoming advocates for justice in our own time and place, we can begin to change the unjust attitudes and perspectives that demean and hurt all members of society. By seeking reasons to hope despite the cynicism and negativity that surrounds us, we give the world reason to hope. The Vision: A Church that goes out – Pentecost Sunday (commission on Family of Parishes) The sympathy of our parishes is extended to Fr. Francis Thekkumkattil, pastor of St. Philip’s Parish, Petrolia on the death of his mother, Mary, who died this past week in India. Please pray for them and for all those who mourn. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord; And let perpetual light shine upon, them.

This Sunday we welcome El Sistema South London ~ Our purpose is three fold: 1) To advance education by providing immersive music instruction free of charge to children, targeting but not limited to at-risk children in South London. The instruction is intense and constantly challenging. Each orchestra member is challenged to develop their own skill to the highest possible level while contributing to the quality of the orchestra. The orchestra performs music from the master composers as well as popular music from today; 2) To advance the public’s appreciation of art by regular public performances in unusual venues and for diverse audiences. They perform a wide variety of music at their home schools, secondary schools, nursing homes, churches, music festivals and other elementary schools; 3) To address and prevent problems faced by children and youth by instilling confidence, self-respect, humility, integrity, and passion in striving for musical excellence as an orchestra. The children are intensely and meaningfully engaged three to four nights a week between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30. It is imperative that the orchestra members exhibit humility, integrity and passion each day. Humility in their constant striving to improve, recognizing that there will always be another level to attain. Integrity in their daily attendance, focus and effort in session and in diligent home practice to perfect the skills that are taught in session. Passion in complete commitment to playing their very best at all times, and in an excited and positive approach to new, challenging material. These Grade 8 and 9 students began playing in Grade 5. They are now the most advanced students in the program and they have just been named the most outstanding ensemble in the 2018 London Kiwanis Music Festival. They perform in the provincial finals in June. We thank them for sharing their talents with us and wish them all the best.
