WELCOME

These iconic words, from the epic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, mean so much for so many when we imagine where “home” takes us. For many, it is a birthplace, for others it is where they have spent most of their lives, and for

still others it is wherever they ley their head. After all, home is where the heart is! But there is another kind of home, a spiritual one, which can root us in something greater than ourselves and connect us to something that has a history and a future that makes the present all the more meaningful. That is what I think of whenever I get the awesome opportunity to visit Assisi, Italy – the birthplace and resting place of Francis of Assisi and the spiritual home to the uncountable number of Franciscans who have come after him in the 800 years since brothers and sisters were first drawn to his simple home. It only stands to reason that the ministry here at the Duke Catholic Center, imbued with the spirit of Sts. Francis and Clare, would seek to share that spiritual home with our students.

In this issue you will read about the first pilgrimage that we carried out to Assisi and Rome in May. More than just a pilgrimage, it is a return to and an exploration of a spiritual home that many people don’t know they have until they arrive there. St. Francis rings a deep chord within so many people, and visiting the ancient town built into the side of a mountain, reveals a home that transcends culture, language and even religious affiliation. It is as if the stones

themselves speak of the universal nature of peace and goodness that Francis found and shared, not in grandiose achievements or mesmerizing speech, but in a simplicity of life that appreciated the innate connection of all of creation and the need to care together for everyone, especially the marginalized. That sounds like home to me! The students whom we exposed to this old and ever new spiritual home will always take with them a connection not just to a place, but rather to way of life that is founded in Christ and empowered to be taken two-by-two the world over. Our world which demonstrates its disconnection between left and right by vitriol and bitterness is challenged to find a simple answer to the question “where is home?” and “who is welcome there?” In a spirit of St. Francis, found so powerfully in the streets and vistas of Assisi, may we be empowered to live lives that proclaim to the world that there is no place like home and all are welcome there as sons and daughters of God. No need to click your heels three times and repeat, just simply sit in silence and allow the roots of your own spiritual home (Assisi or elsewhere) to connect you to a much bigger universe. It is our prayer that experiences like this pilgrimage and the rest of the programming of the DCC sends our graduates out into a world to make it their home, and to be prepared for an eternal home that is really like no place on earth!

Peace,Fr. Mike

The Duke Catholic Center is pleased to welcome two new staff members this academic year! Sister Frances Zajac, F.S.E. will serve as Director of Retreats and Pilgrimages, and MyLan Metzger is the new Peer Ministry Coordinator.

Sister Frances joined the DCC team in early August after working for 25 years as a high school teacher in Meriden, Connecticut. Though she’s worked primarily with high school students in years past, her own college years and post-grad experiences will be a point of connection for many Duke Catholic Students.

A former D1 varsity volleyball and softball player at the University of Dayton, Sister Frances is familiar with the difficulty of balancing academics and extracurriculars — a dynamic with which many Duke freshmen struggle. Moreover, as a former Peace Corps volunteer, she is already a source of inspiration and encouragement for Duke Students interested in integrating their faith into a life of service after college.

“Sister Frances has already been a terrific resource for me as I learn more about my faith,” said John Markis ’22. “And she genuinely demonstrates concern for anyone who walks into her office. I cannot wait to get to know her better in the coming year!”MyLan, on the other hand, brings with her

a more directly relatable experience. Having just graduated from Georgetown University in May 2019 with a degree in theology and government, MyLan’s status as a young peer minister is already translating into natural friendships and opportunities for organic spiritual development with Catholic Duke Students.

From the outset, both MyLan and Sister Frances have been full of energy and enthusiasm for this new opportunity to build Christ’s Kingdom on Duke’s campus.

“I’m really looking forward to building community at the Falcone-Arena House, supporting the student directors in their ministry, and walking with students in their faith, said MyLan. “College was a very transformative time for my faith, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the spiritual development of Duke Students.”

With two new ministry staff on board, DCC staff and students alike are excited for the year ahead and the fresh opportunities for growing more disciples on campus!

The DCC could not be more grateful to the Cutcliffes and the many generous Duke Catholic donors who enable the Catholic community at Duke to grow and thrive in new ways every year!

MyLan Metzger and Sister Frances have dived right into Catholic life at Duke with social events, welcoming Catholic freshmen, and even making a climb to the top of Duke Chapel!

For Duke Students who worship with the Duke Catholic Center on Sundays, one of the first reflections they often share is how powerful and moving they find the music. But even beyond the

experience of Mass-goers, the DCC Music Ministry is one of the key ways the Catholic Center reaches out to musical students and sup-ports them in a life of prayer and service. Andrew Witchger, Direc-tor of Music, has created a ministry that feels more like a family of faith than a simple ensemble. Key to this dynamic is Andrew and his music leaders’ ability to meet one-on-one with students on a regular basis. Andrew nevertheless found himself hamstringed often by the logistics of preparing individualized music binders for every musicianand singer for each Sunday. Andrew uses a wide variety of music for Mass at the DCC – even composing some of the music himself. No matter what is played, whether it is an old hymn or something composed in the last week, Andrew arranges 14-16 musical pieces a week. Since students in the ministry have a wide range of musical skills, Andrew also prepares individualized binders of music for each student, so they can each play according to their own ability. With over 80 students involved in playing with the music ministry, preparing the sheet music for the DCC Sunday liturgy became a

daunting task. Each week he would prepare 30 different binders in 7 different musical keys for 10 different instruments and 4 vocal parts – in total printing and organizing over 500 pages of sheet music. Andrew found himself spending 10+ hours a week dedicated to these logistics, taking away his precious time from doing what he does best – bringing people to God through music. Then the Cutcliffes stepped in. When Head Football Coach David Cutcliffe and DCC Advisory Board Member Karen Cutcliffe heard about the time-consuming backend logistics of the Catholic Center’s Music Ministry and learned that a simple digital solution was possible, they wasted no time in stepping up to the plate. As regular worshipers with the DCC on Sundays, the Cutcliffes have been moved by the music ministry for years. Thanks to a

generous donation from the Cutcliffes this past year, the music ministry purchased a fleet of iPads to replace the music binders, a move which immediately improved efficiency and allowed for expanded outreach to students. After seeing music binders in the hands of the singers and on the music stands of the instrumentalists for years, people were surprised to see all the new iPads that replaced them. This upgrade allowed the musicians to have any music piece at their fingertips during rehearsal and Mass. The music is now digitized, sorted into various keys, and organized by instrument. Now during rehearsals, if Andrew tweaks a harmony or changes a refrain, all he has to do is send an update to the iPads and all his musicians will instantly have the change. Not only have the iPads helped Andrew and the music team from cumbersome logistics, the iPads have allowed Andrew and the other musicians to focus their time and attention on playing the beautiful music that enhances the liturgy and on ministering to others. Since the iPads were introduced, Andrew spends more time meeting with students on-on-one where they talk about their faith life and how to get closer to Christ. “The iPads are more efficient to use and organize,” said Mia Carlson ’20. “And if one of the pieces needs to be arranged, we can effectively do so without shuffling any papers – or, in my case, dropping them on the floor. The iPads also have scheduling and attendance capability which was not possible with the old binders. I can go from music sheets to attendance on the same device! The iPads have been a game-changer.”

The DCC could not be more grateful to the Cutcliffes and the many generous Duke Catholic donors who enable the Catholic community at Duke to grow and thrive in new ways every year!

Singers Paul Sabharwal ’22, Felipe Ossa PhD ’21, and DCC Summer Intern Lilly Hidalgo keep up with the various Mass parts on the iPads.

This summer the Duke Catholic Center made a pilgrimage

to Rome and Assisi, on which students and DCC staff were

able to experience their faith in an unforgettable way.

A group of six Duke Students and four DCC staff members

spent five days together in Assisi, where they were able

to walk in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare. They

walked the ancient, stone streets of the city, visiting

important places of conversion and prayer for St. Francis

and St. Clare, such as San Damiano, the Shrine of the

Stripping of St. Francis, and Santa Chiara. They also hiked

and experienced God in nature, just as Francis often did.

And each day they celebrated Mass in a different holy site

in the city.

The trip had a profound impact on students’ spiritual lives

and their thoughts on vocational calling. Wilderson Medina

Baron, a PhD student in biology, shared how the pilgrimage

impacted both his spiritual life and his vocational calling:

“Visiting the places where St. Francis intensively lived after

his conversion was a special opportunity to learn how he

developed such a profound spirituality and to marvel at

the way I, too, can interiorize and manifest my love for all

creatures in the world,” said Wilderson Medina Baron, a

doctoral student in biology. “This is particularly important

for me, as it is the way God put in my heart the interest to

study the conservation of biodiversity.”

After growing closer to Christ through the example of

St. Francis and St. Clare in Assisi, the pilgrims traveled to

the Vatican. In Rome, they learned more about the history

of the Church, as they visited the four major basilicas, the

Pantheon, the catacombs, and other holy places. Even a

general audience with Pope Francis made it into the

experience! And at each step along the pilgrims’ way,

the group connected with local Franciscan Sisters of the

Eucharist and Conventual Franciscan friars.

“Sitting in silence in all of those sacred places, I found my

thoughts returning over and over to how much St. Francis

and St. Clare loved Jesus, so much that they left all they

had to follow him,” said Ella Gunady ’22. “They are such

beautiful examples of faith, who continue to challenge me

to deepen my love for and trust in God.”

With such a successful first student pilgrimage in the

books, Catholic Duke Students are excited for more

unique spiritual opportunities to come!

With a dedicated Director of Small Groups in veteran campus minister Catherine Preston, the Duke

Catholic Center has recognized the powerful impact that Scripture-based small faith- sharing groups can be on a college campus. For many young Catholics at Duke, small groups in the DCC are a place for them to explore their faith in a casual environment, to begin encountering Jesus in Scripture, and to learn from their peers how to grow as a disciple. A key part of the DCC’s ministry and out-reach to students, we invite you to check out some exciting Small Group details below!

*Peer-based mentoring is a growing opportunity for the DCC. Students respond powerfully to being led by their own classmates. If you’d like to contribute to the training opportunities for students to become peer-discipleship mentors, please contact [email protected]
