The immobilizer systemFor im proved anti-theft protection, the m otorcycle isequipped w ith an IM M O BILIZER, an electronic systemthat inhibits engine operation w henever the ignitionsw itch is turned off.Accom m odated in the handgrip of each ignition key is an

electronic device that m odulates an output signal. Thissignal is generated by a special antenna incorporated inthe sw itch w hen the ignition is turned on and changesevery tim e. The m odulated signal acts as a passw ordand tells the CPU that an "authorised" ignition key isbeing used to start up the engine. W hen the CPUrecognises the signal, it enables engine start-up.

Keys (fig. 4.1)The O w ner receives a set of keys com prising:- 1 RED key A- 2 BLACK keys B

The keys B are regular ignition keys and are used to:- start up the engine- open the lock of the fuel tank filler plug- open the seat lock.

The key A perform s the sam e functions as the keys B,and is also used to w ipe off and re-program other blackkeys, if needed.

    14

    E

NoteThe three keys have a sm all plate (1) attached that

    reports their identification num ber.

OperationW hen the ignition key is turned to O FF, the im m obilizerinhibits engine operation.W hen the ignition key is turned back to O N to start theengine, the follow ing happens:1) if the CPU recognised the code, the CO D E light on the

instrum ent panel w ill flash briefly. This m eans that theim m obilizer system has recognised the key code andenabled engine ignition. W hen you press the STARTbutton, the engine w ill start up.2) If the CO D E light stays on, it m eans that the code hasnot been recognised. W hen this is the case, turn theignition key back to O FF and then to O N again. If theengine still does not start, try w ith another key.If the other key does not w ork out either, contact the

D U CATI Service netw ork.

WarningThe keys accom m odate electronic com ponents

Duplicate keysIf you need any duplicate keys, contact the D U CATIService netw ork w ith all the keys you have left and yourCO DE CARD.D U CATI Service w ill program up to 8 new keys and re-program your original keys.

You m ay be asked to identify yourself as the legitim ateow ner of the m otorcycle. Be sure have any docum entsyou m ight need to this end ready. The codes of any keys not subm itted w ill be w iped offfrom the m em ory to m ake those keys unserviceable incase they have been lost.

    DIRECTIONS FOR USE

    Running-in recom mendations

Max. rotation speedRotation speed for running-in period and during standarduse (rpm ):1) up to 1000 km ;2) from 1000 to 2500 km ;3) after 2500 km .

Up to 1000 kmD uring the first 1000 km , keep the revolution m eterunder control. The indicator m ust not exceed:6000 rpm .D uring the first hours of riding, it is advisable to run theengine at varying load and rpm , though still w ithinrecom m ended lim it.To this end, roads w ith plenty of bends and even slightly

hilly areas are ideal for a m ost efficient running-in ofengine, brakes and suspensions. For the first 100 km , use the brakes gently. D o not brakeviolently or keep brake applied for too long. This w illenable a correct break-in of friction m aterial on brakepads against brake discs.

For all m echanical parts of the m otorcycle to adapt toone another and above all not to adversely affect the lifeof basic engine parts, it is advisable to avoid harshaccelerations and not to run the engine at high rpm fortoo long, especially uphill.Furtherm ore, the drive chain should be inspected

    frequently. Lubricate it as required.

From 1000 to 2500 kmAt this point, you can squeeze som e m ore pow er out ofyour engine, being careful, how ever, never exceed:7500 rpm .

ImportantD uring the w hole running-in period, the

m aintenance and service rules recom m ended in thism anual should be observed carefully.Com pliance w ith the above instructions is a prerequisitefor W arranty validity. Failure to com ply w ith these rulesw ill release D ucati M otor H olding S.p.A. from any liabilityw hatsoever for resulting engine dam age or shorterengine life.

After 2500 kmAfter running-in, never exceed the follow ing values

during the m otorcycle standard use:9000 rpm .

Strict observance of running-in recom m endations w illensure longer engine life and reduce the likelihood ofoverhauls and tune-ups.

Spark plugs are essential to sm ooth engine running andshould be checked at regular intervals. This is done quite easily and quickly and provides a goodm easure of engine condition.Rem ove the spark plug coils from the cylinder headusing the w rench supplied w ith the bike.

Check the color of the insulating ceram ic m aterial of thecentral electrode: a light brow n, even color is a sign ofgood engine condition. If color has altered or you find anydark deposits, change the spark plug and report this to aD ucati dealer or authorized w orkshop.Check w ear on the central electrode. If it looks w orn outor has a vitreous appearance, change the spark plug.Check electrode gap: it should be 0.6-0.7 m m .

ImportantIf the gap needs adjusting, be very careful w hen

bending the side electrode. If gap is too w ide or tooclose, engine perform ance w ill be affected. This couldalso cause difficult starting or irregular idling.Clean the electrode and the insulating m aterial accuratelyusing a sm all m etal brush and check seal condition.Clean the seat in the cylinder head.
