Carrying on the renown and image of the massive success of the 916, 996 and 998 provides the en-gineers and designers with a huge task. The new bike’s riders, racers, and its time on the market will show how well they did their job. With its even more bold and refined Italian styling, the 999 is the heir to the previous models, taking on all comers and walking the perilous road to glory.

GOAL

An entirely new assignment for Akrapovic and a challenge which we couldn’t refuse. The technically de-manding placement of the complicated integral stock muffler beneath the seat also demanded a new design approach from our R&D department. We have succeeded in producing an eye-catching component guar-anteed to attract attention.

ABOUT AKRAPOVIC EVOLUTION SYSTEMS

The Akrapovic EVOLUTION system is in the top class of Akrapovic exhaust systems. Its job is precisely defined: first increased engine performance at the top of the rpm range, and then aesthetic enhancement of the bike’s design.

As stated, the central mounting position of the system required precision design of the system, especially of the muffler, and at the same time of some new carbon-fiber components which have never before been developed for our exhaust systems.

The tubes for this system are made of precisely gauged conical elements which ensure the correct flow of exhaust gases. The header tubes are made of high-quality stainless steel, while the two-part conical link pipe is made of titanium.

The header assembly is composed of three parts: a front header tube and a rear header tube, which are both attached to the header tube connector (a combination of a collector and extensions of the front and rear header tubes) with free-floating joints held together using high-quality silicon-shielded tensioning springs.

The link pipe is divided into two parts. One part is independent, and is connected to the header tube con-nector with a free-floating joint. Another free-floating joint connects the independent tube to the other part of the link pipe (second part), which is welded to the muffler. All free-floating joints are held together with high-quality silicon-shielded Akrapovic tensioning springs.

In order to maximize performance, the Akrapovic EVOLUTION system has interference crossover tubes installed between the header tubes. It does not include a fitting for installing a lambda sensor.

The muffler is the part which grabs your attention first. We have developed a completely new integral single muffler for the Ducati 999 which is unlike anything which has ever ap-peared in our product range. Since the 999 has an integral muffler, we had to follow the same concept due to the design and construction of the bike. It is oval-section, with a different outlet cap than we have previously produced for the Akrapovic Road program. The outer sleeve is available only in titanium, which goes extremely well with the refined lines of the Ducati. The metal parts in the interior of the muffler are also made entirely of titanium.

The muffler and the second part of the link pipe are welded together to form a single component. In addition to the painstaking development of the muffler, the R&D department put a great deal of effort into the design of the carbon-fiber brackets and the carbon-fiber clamp. The carbon-fiber brackets sit above and below the muffler.

Due to the stock design of the motorcycle, the carbon-fiber bracket on the underside of the muffler also car-ries the rear lights and the license-plate holder, and is attached directly to the muffler, while the carbon-fiber bracket on the top of the muffler holds the carbon-fiber clamp. In other words, the upper bracket is attached to the frame, and the clamp is attached to the upper bracket.

The Akrapovic EVOLUTION exhaust system for the Ducati 999 is also available with an optional carbon-fiber leg protector which is mounted onto the link pipe.

Measurements of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION system on the Ducati 999:

• power: the intent of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION exhaust can be clearly seen from the power curve. It shows its true colors from 8000 rpm on with a major increase of power. Measurements of the Ducati at 10200 rpm show a full 124.7 HP going to the rear wheel. The max. increased power is recorded at the same rpm, which at 5.8 HP is already in the overrev range for the stock exhaust, while for the Akrapovic system shows up as the max. power. From 6000 to 7600 rpm the results are slightly lower than the stock system, but still follow the stock curve. More evident is the filling of the shallow dropout between 4000 and 5600 rpm. This allows for a more fluid application of power.• torque: a similar dynamic can be seen in the torque curve, only slightly more pronounced. The sharp dropout be-tween 4000 and 5600 rpm is completely filled and actually turned into a major increase by our system. Like the power curve, from 6000 to 7600 rpm the results are slightly lower than the stock system, but this will not affect the riding style. And of course with our system the engine really comes into its own at high revs. It serves up a clearly noticeable difference which in combination with the increased power provides a serious weapon for maximum exploitation of the engine and riding at the extreme physical limit.

This exhaust system not only provides extreme performance, but aesthetic enhancement with its refined, soft oval shaped titanium muffler and the dynamic downward-facing outlet cap, which beautifully complete the lines at the back of the Italian thoroughbred. One of the most important specs for our top-of-the-line systems is the weight savings in comparison with the stock system. The Akrapovic EVOLUTION system will save you a full 8.35 kg of excess weight. And in exchange for the weight, the system will augment the sound of the Italian twin. The modification you made to the back of the bike will be clearly evident for all to see and hear. We put a great deal of effort into the development of this system, but it was definitely worth it. With its elegance and enhanced tone, we were hooked from the moment we installed it and fired up the engine!
