The James Joyce Centre is located in a beautifully restored Georgian townhouse on North Great George’s Street. The building is based in an area with many Joycean landmarks, including Belvedere College, where he went to school at the top of the street. The house also boasts a unique connection with Joyce through Professor Denis J. Maginni, who operated a dancing academy here at the turn of the last century and who appears in the novel Ulysses.

The Centre houses a permanent interpretative exhibition which includes computer installations, room recreations, video documentaries, and other items relating to the life and work of Joyce. These include the front door to No. 7 Eccles Street, the home of Leopold and Molly Bloom, a copy of Joyce’s death mask and the furniture from the apartment of Paul Leon where Joyce worked on his final novel Finnegans Wake. A free audio guide is included as part of admission.

The Centre also provides acclaimed walking tours of Joyce’s Dublin, as well as hosting a free lecture series and other Joyce-related events throughout the year, in particular, the Bloomsday Festival on 16th June. Visit the Centre’s website for further details.

A step aboard the Jeanie Johnston is a step towards understanding the daunting experience of the millions of people who crossed the Atlantic seeking survival and hope in the “New World” of North America. Once on board, visitors are transported back in time 150 years or more to join the poverty stricken Irish emigrants as they boarded the sturdy ship for the difficult transatlantic voyage and uncertain future in the ‘New World’.

The life-sized figures that are present in the museum below deck are all based on actual passengers who sailed on the ship. From the 15 year old girl (Margaret Conway) travelling only with her 12 year old brother, to the father of 11 (James Stack) whose livelihood was ruined by the famine….all the misery, anguish and confusion of the emigrant Irish are vividly brought to mind.

Back up on deck, visitors have an opportunity to marvel at the skill, ingenuity and craftwork involved in re-creating this genuine replica of a wooden tall ship, one of the last of its type to sail the Atlantic in the 19th Century. Jeanie Johnston is docked at Custom House Quay in Dublin’s city centre and is an accurate replica of the original ship which sailed between Tralee in Co. The GPO Museum in Dublin’s famous Post Office is much more than a postal museum for it shows, through its exhibition ‘Letters, Lives & Liberty’, how the Post Office has played such a vital role in so many aspects of Irish society over the generations.

From transport and communications to design, technology and stamps it has profoundly influenced Irish life not least, perhaps, by the role of the GPO as rebel headquarters during the 1916 Rising. Drop in to the GPO and explore, through traditional and interactive displays, the Post Office story.

Please Note: The Museum is due to close at some point in 2015 as a new museum is being built. Dates are yet to be confirmed. Please check the museum website for details and to ensure it is open when you wish to visit.

Welcome to the Casino at Marino!

The Casino is Ireland’s miniature 18th century architectural masterpiece designed as a pleasure house for James Caulfeild, 1st earl of Charlemont in 1759. Lord Charlemont commissioned one of the finest architects of the day, Sir William Chambers, to create a unique and intriguing garden temple from which to overlook the magnificent panorama of Dublin Bay.

The Casino, meaning ‘small house’ surprises visitors as they discover the remarkable secrets of this architectural gem. Its lavishly decorated and compact exterior cleverly disguises an interior of 16 intimate rooms displaying intricately ornate Georgian motifs.

The richly patterned marquetry floors and beautifully executed plasterwork, act as an historical backdrop to the Casino’s past, lovingly brought to life by our friendly and knowledgeable guides. Cared for by the OPW (Office of Public Works) the Casino at Marino is regarded internationally for its exquisite craftsmanship which continues the legacy of Lord Charlemont’s vision. The unique interiors of the building act as a backdrop to showcase works of artists and designers.

Highlights for 2015: ’Paradise Lost: Lord Charlemont’s Lost Gardens at Marino’ which gathers together an eclectic mix of evidence and remnants of a long lost garden and demesne.

Please Note: Casino can be closed from time to time for Government business/Civil Ceremonies. Access to the building is via flights of stone steps. Wheelchair access to exterior and parklands only. Contact us for exterior tours. Warning: Steep drops at top of steps around the building. Children must be supervised at all times.

Founded c.1030 by King Sitriuc Silkbeard and Dunan, the first Bishop of Dublin, Christ Church Cathedral has stood at the heart of the city of Dublin for nearly 1000 years. Dublin’s Patron Saint, Laurence O’Toole and Strongbow (Richard de Clare) were both involved in building the Cathedral as we see it today. No visit to Dublin is truly complete without spending some time soaking up the unique atmosphere of the Cathedral’s exquisite gothic nave, complemented by stunning floor tiles and beautiful stained glass. The Cathedral Crypt is the oldest surviving structure in Dublin and is one of the largest medieval crypts in Europe.

Admission to the Cathedral includes entry to the crypt and the ‘Treasures Of Christ Church’ exhibition where many Cathedral artefacts and manuscripts are on display, including the tabernacle used by James II and the magnificent plate presented to the Cathedral by William III after the Battle of the Boyne. Visitors may also avail of the Cathedral gift shop, selling quality Cathedral and Irish souvenirs, and the Crypt Café which serves delicious coffees, lunches and afternoon teas. Guided tours of the Cathedral and belfry are available – phone or see the website for details.

Kerry and North America between 1847 and 1855. Guided tours for visitors are conducted daily.

The Natural History Building is a ‘cabinet-style’museum designed to showcase a wide-rangingand comprehensive zoological collection. Often described as a ‘museum of a museum’, its 10,000 exhibits provide a glimpse of the natural world that has delighted generations of visitors since the doors opened in 1857.

Our exhibitions have changed very little in overa century. The ground floor is dedicated to Irishanimals, featuring giant deer skeletons and a varietyof mammals, birds and fish. The 2nd floor of thebuilding is laid out in the 19th century in a scientificarrangement showing animals by taxonomic group. This scheme demonstrated the diversity of animallife in an evolutionary sequence.

In April 2010 the Museum reopened afterrestoration works that included the reinstatementof the grand stone staircase, open to the public forthe first time in decades. While Natural History wasclosed, the Education and Outreach Departmentdeveloped two new learning spaces, includingthe Discovery Zone where visitors can handletaxidermy and open drawers to see what is lurkinginside, and our Reading Area at first floor level which is a great place to rest and settle down with a good book.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral has contributed much toIrish life throughout its long history (it was foundedin 1191). The writer and satirist Jonathan Swift wasDean of St. Patrick’s from 1713-1745.

Handel’s Messiah received its first performance in1742 sung by the combined choirs of St. Patrick’s and Christ Church. Music has played an integral part in the life of St. Patrick’s since its foundation and it is the only Cathedral in these islands to sing two services everyday.

Living Stones, the Cathedral’s permanentexhibition, celebrates St. Patrick’s place in the lifeof the city, its history and its role at the dawn of thethird millennium. It emphasises that the Cathedral is not a museum but a building embracing the past to herald the future. The Cathedral is open daily for visitors.

USEFUL INFORMATION

ACCOMMODATIONDublin provides visitors with a wide range of accommodation types, from hotels, guesthouses, Irish homes and self-catering to campus, specialist accommodation, caravan and camping and hostels. For reservations call into one of our Dublin Discover Ireland Centres or see www.visitdublin.com.

POST OFFICESMost post offices are open Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm and some open on Saturdays from 9am-1pm. The General Post Office on O’Connell Street in the city centre is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am-6pm. Postal codes in Dublin are presented as ‘Dublin plus number’ – for example Dublin 1, Dublin 2. Odd numbers refer to areas north of the Liffey and even ones to areas south of the Liffey. They spread out numerically from the city centre.

BANKSIn general, banks open Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm, with late opening on Thursdays until 5pm. All major credit cards are widely accepted. Foreign exchange facilities are available in the Dublin Discover Ireland Centre on Suffolk Street.

BUSINESS HOURSMost businesses are open Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm. Most shops in Dublin are open from 9am until 6pm Monday-Saturday and 12pm until 6pm on Sundays. Shops stay open late on Thursday evenings in the city centre and late on Friday evenings in the suburbs.

TIPPINGIn restaurants a customary service charge may be added to a bill. If a service charge is included, tipping is not necessary, unless the service received is exemplary. If a service charge was not included, a normal tip is between 10%-15%. With other services from hairdressers to taxi drivers, it is generally not necessary to tip although staff will always appreciate acknowledgment of service.

SMOKINGDublin was Europe’s first smoke free capital city! Since 29th March 2004 smoking is banned in all enclosed places of work in Ireland. This includes banks, office blocks, public buildings, pubs, nightclubs, restaurants and cafés. The primary purpose of the prohibition is to give protection to workers and the public who are exposed to harmful environmental tobacco smoke. Exceptions include hotel, guesthouse and B&B bedrooms and private accommodation. Most pubs and some restaurants have installed or extended existing beer-gardens or patios to cater for those who smoke.

Termini e condizioni d’uso
