So how many times have we been asked ‘Why Dubai?’ The simple

answer is ‘Why not?’ In all honesty the whole idea and plan was

hatched over some late nights and late drinks with the 2 other main

conspirators namely Chris ‘babyface’ Meehan (Sound City) and the

marvelously enigmatic and slightly mad (in a great way) Alex Bracken

(New Dawn). However when you look at it all it makes absolute

sense. Dubai is the centre of the international business world, it’s

airport connects daily with all the main trading territories of the

international music business and it has the most amazing hotels and

venues to deliver a truly world class music festival and conference.

All of this combined with a drive and hunger from within to make

things happen and on top of that amazing weather in the middle of

winter. What more could we hope or wish for!

Dubai now makes absolute sense and fits perfectly with our

future vision.

Liverpool Sound City has quickly gained the reputation as the coolest

and best new music festival and international music business

conference in the UK. In the future we will start the summer in our

usual grand style in May with Liverpool Sound City, the most exciting

music and business festival in the whole of Europe and end the year

with Dubai Sound City, ‘The world’s hottest winter music festival and

conference’. It is our aim to ensure Sound City is the obvious festival

and conference of choice for serious music lovers and those who do

business in the field of music.

So what do we have planned for Dubai in 2009? Like Liverpool we

do not do things by halves. We are bringing over 70 bands into the

region to perform on 10 stages in some of the best venues and

outdoor locations in downtown Dubai. Alongside this we will deliver a

world class industry conference in the famous Emirates Towers with

a sterling line up of over 40 invited speakers and keynotes from the

highest levels of the international music business. By day there will

be opportunities to rub shoulders and engage with these key players

from the music business and by night take in some of the hottest

zeitgeist and heritage acts this little planet has to offer. Highlights

across the board include Happy Mondays, Liverpool favourites Echo

and The Bunnymen, The Wombats and Wave Machines and Sound

City favourites We Have Band. We’ve also secured keynotes for our

conference from the Managing Director of Universal International,

Japan, Kimitaka Kato, and Brian Message from ATC management.

This short journey called life is all about making something of worth

and substance. Sound City is a labour of love to create something of

meaning, depth and substance. In Alex Bracken and New Dawn we

have found our kindred spirit........You ain’t seen nothing yet.

See you on the beach and the dancefloor don’t forget your Factor 30.

David J. Pichilingi / Festival Director / Sound City

People have been asking me “Why Dubai”? Now that our festival has

arrived in town, the reason will become obvious over the next three

days. To kick start the festival, I made friends with Dave Pichilingi

and Chris Meehan from Liverpool Sound City. Our partnership

showed me the way in which we needed to go, and from this

Dubai Sound City was born from an award winning existing format.

Whatever happens, it’s their fault!

The truth is that Dubai needs Sound City and the music industry

needs Dubai. I have lived here for 9 years and watched this city

grow. Dubai is truly the gateway to the East, so why not open our

doors? We need to encourage the music industry to see what we

have here, and have the opportunity to see some wonderful bands

strut their stuff on stage.

We are tired of only having big-name DJs and stadium bands arrive

here and then leave in the blink of an eye. We need something more

enduring, to get people talking, to show what we can achieve here.

With Dubai Sound City, we are putting on a three-day experience

with a real festival atmosphere. So many venues are involved that

Dubaians cannot help coming along and enjoying the ride.

There will be no airs or graces because these three days are all

about the music. Massive international names will share the same 10

stages as up-and-coming local bands - just like at big-name festivals

around the world.

People told me it couldn’t be done, but I believed, just like the people

of Dubai have believed for a long time that their city is worthy of an

event of this scale. The music industry obviously trusts in us, having

sent some of its most important figures here, and the effects of

Dubai Sound City’s conferences will be felt across the world for quite

some time.

So come on kids; enjoy what we have worked hard for many

months to create. For the first time we have a wealth of choice and

a wide sphere of influence. I have no doubt this will be the start of

something big.

Enjoy

Irish Village, Thursday, 23:00 www.myspace.com/humanleagueband

Exploding from the fiery furnace of the Steel City in 1977, Sheffield’s Electronic music pioneers Human League blazed a trail to create the blueprint of British Synthpop. Forever the consummate innovators, they have tasted chart success over the years, 8 UK Top 10 singles and 2 UK/US No1’s. However, their popularity has never led to mediocrity; essentially underground and original to the core - constantly driving forward, breaking boundaries – inspiring the likes of Madonna to Moby. With nine studio albums, over 20million records sold and over 350 concerts performed, the importance of this seminal electronic music band is outstanding.

The Human LeagueThe Human League

Irish Village, Friday, 23:00 www.myspace.com/happymondaysonline

All night underground raves to a soundtrack of acid house; frequented by a new wave of revolutionaries, a concoction of post-punk energies, northern soul sensibilities, urban swagger and a passion for living and social expression - all held together with more pharmaceuticals than your local Boots. This is

‘Madchester’. This is ‘Happy Mondays’. Blending alternative rock with hip hop, laid back basslines, blues guitar and samples, Happy Mondays carved their name into pop music coining the term ‘Baggy’ music and heavily influencing the sound of future Manchester greats.

Doves

Echo and the Bunnymen

Irish Village, Saturday, 23:00 www.myspace.com/thebunnymen

Forging a new identity for Liverpool music from the ashes of punk and psychedelia, Echo and the Bunnymen commandeered a dwindling torch from their Merseybeat ancestors and proceeded to set world music alight. Led by the insanely charismatic Ian McCulloch aka ‘Mac The Mouth’ whose stage presence is both revered and critically acclaimed. The spitting, snarling songsmith captivates audiences and exudes Liverpudlian attitude, ‘cool’ literally permeates from his every pore.

Ocean Colour Scene

Irish Village, Friday, 21:40 www.myspace.com/ocsmusic

In the mid 90’s Ocean Colour Scene were at the forefront of the Britpop movement and they’ve never really gone away. Iconic frontman Simon Fowler evokes mod style and a madchester like strut into his performance. They deliver soaring anthems and crowd-pleasing favourites such as Riverboat Song, Travellers Tune and Profit in Peace. Fresh from a summer of festival frivolities, these established favourites come armed with a few new tricks up their sleeves in the form of new album Rockfield, a power-packed, guitar driven frenzy cultivated by the esteemed Gavin Monaghan (Robert Plant, Kings Of Leon, Editors, The Twang) and due for release early 2010.

Irish Village, Thursday, 21:40 www.myspace.com/dovesmyspace

Renowned as one of the best live rock bands in music today, Doves are simply awe-inspiring live. Their euphoric sound is tailor made for festival concerts, it fills vast open spaces, resonating through each and every

audience member, creating truly memorable experiences – to put it simply, they are epic. Anyone with a soul will dig Doves, they are one of those must see once in a lifetime bands. Lead singer Jimi Goodwin wears his heart on his sleeve, pouring out emotion and a sense of mutual love and respect for those that are feeling him.

The Futureheads

Super Furry Animals

Irish Village, Saturday, 21:40 www.myspace.com/superfurry

The boys from the Welsh valleys have been conjuring up their own brand of ‘off the wall’ rock since 1993. Led by Gruff Rhys, possibly the most endearing and engaging front man in music, they are renowned for their intimate approach to live shows. Expect to hear a truly eclectic mix of experimental rock, psychedelic noise, punk and soul. Intrinsic passion and love for music drives SFA and has resulted in the build up of a massive cult following. With records that are moving and beautiful, to weird and wonderful, to brash and in you’re face sticking it to the man rock and roll, SFA are a stylistic volcano waiting to erupt.

De La Soul

Irish Village, Friday, 20:30 www.myspace.com/delasoul

The crown princes of Jazz flavoured Hip Hop since 1987, innovators of feel good hip-hop music with a social conscience, De La Soul have always remained true to their roots. With more sing-along tracks than a Queen tribute band, De La Soul rock audiences with their innate charisma and lyrical skill. Their debut LP ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ is widely regarded as a fat slice of genius and could almost stand up alone as a greatest hits album, such is the depth of quality and craftsmanship involved.

Irish Village, Thursday, 20:30 www.myspace.com/thefutureheads

Good, old-fashioned, leave your hang-ups at the door – hang your troubles out to dry – let your hair down - FUN. Sunderland’s finest have three albums packed to the rafters with damn good records and

a ferocious energy filled live show to boot. They’ve had their share of turbulent times in recent years but always come up smelling of roses and delivering the goods. Their most recent LP 2008’s ‘This Is Not The World’ was commandeered by super-producer ‘Youth’ and is a rumpshakingly raucous blend of indie rock and punk.

The Farm

The Wombats

Irish Village, Saturday, 20:30 www.myspace.com/thewombatsuk

Not only are they a breed of hairy, short-legged marsupials found in Australia and Tasmania, they are also a band of leery, two-legged musicians founded in Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts. Three piece indie-pop band The Wombats have been delighting audiences with their melody packed bubblegum rock since 2003. An instant hit in China, they played gigs to over 20,000 people in the early days. In 2007 they established themselves as the darlings of Radio 1, being championed by the likes of Zane Lowe and Colin Murray. They’re usually busy rocking happy-go-lucky indie disco kids with their unique high-octane, silly-fun-indie-pop joyous noise.

The Courteeners

Irish Village, Friday, 19:20 www.myspace.com/thecourteeners

The Courteeners took 2007 by the scruff of the neck with their blood and guts rock and roll, resulting in a kind of hype similar to that experienced around bands like the Arctic Monkeys. Lead singer Liam Fray’s lyrics resonate with the fierce honesty and self deprecating humour hinted at on singles, ‘Cavorting’, ‘Acrylic’ and ‘What Took You So Long?’ His knack of conversational and realistic story telling, shot through with an ability for the well timed barbed put down does indeed remind of Morrissey, but also John Cooper Clarke and Jarvis Cocker. In fact, Morrissey himself is cited as a fan of the Manchester bands music.

Irish Village, Thursday, 19:20 www.myspace.com/thefarmlive

Once dubbed “the soul of socialism” this band of streetwise scousers mix alternative rock and soul to form their own unique brand of pop music. In tune with the youth of the time, The Farm used their success

for social good most notably when they backed the anti-football hooligan campaign in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Their classic hits ‘Groovy Train’ and ‘All Together Now’ formed the height of the bands success with the English national football team issuing the latter to be re-made as the anthem to their 2004 World Cup campaign. The Farm share a place in musical history alongside their peers and fellow pioneers of the ‘baggy music’ movement Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses.

Aslan

Alphabeat

Irish Village, Saturday, 19:20 www.myspace.com/thisisalphabeat

These Scandinavian scoundrels hit the big time in 2007 with their distinctive retro 80’s melodic pop. ‘Fascination’, ‘Ten Thousand Nights’, and ‘Fantastic 6’ are all certified pop gold. Each member of the six strong Alphabeat sings their Nordic hearts out, resulting in sugary sweet male/female harmonies a plenty. These quirky, upbeat danes make children’s TV presenters look like depressed wall-flowers. Alphabeat possess in abundance what all pop music producers strive to create. Their intrinsic ability to knock out innovative, polished yet accessible pop records with style, fun and panache is never contrived. It’s just what they do.

Outlandish

Irish Village, Saturday, 17:00 www.myspace.com/outlandsofficial

Outlandish are a genre defining, cultural melting pot of a band consisting of Isam Bachiri (born in Denmark and of Moroccan background), Waqas Ali Qadri (born in Denmark and of Pakistani background), and Lenny Martinez (born in Honduras). Their multi-lingual music smacks of underground Hip Hop bands like ‘People under the Stairs’ and ‘Dilated Peoples’. Religion and politics are common themes to these deep thinking hip hoppers and the meaningful content is backed up with excellent lyricism, seductive melodies and velvet vocals. They prove that quality music and social conscience can exist together in the same piece of music.

Irish Village, Friday, 18:00 www.myspace.com/aslanireland

No it’s not Aslan the Great Lion from C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, it’s Aslan the musicians voted ‘Best Irish Band’ at the Meteor Irish Music Awards in 2008. However, just like Lewis’s fictional Great Lion,

Aslan the band are a powerful beast with tremendous knowledge and experience. From the mid 1980’s Aslan have been making accomplished rock music and putting on rapturously received live shows. Their most recent album ‘Uncased’ was released and the anthemic nature of the cover songs is ideal for festival gigs as it demands audience participation.

Dirty Skirts

Nitin Sawhney

Irish Village, Saturday, 18:00 www.myspace.com/nitinsawhney

Goodness Me…What can’t this man do? It’s a very short list that’s for sure. He’s possibly the single most talented all-round musician and producer to emerge from the UK in the last few years. Skilled in classical and Jazz piano and Flamenco guitar, Sawhney is one of the pioneers of the British Asian Underground scene. His eight studio albums meld jazz, drum and bass, hip hop, flamenco and modern orchestral compositions. Sawhney’s music is intensely political, commonly approaching themes of multiculturalism, empowerment, identity, immigration, poverty, and spirituality.

Gabriella Cilmi

Irish Village, Friday, 18:00 www.myspace.com/gabriellacilmi

Apparently there’s nothing sweet about Gabriella Cimli but we’d like to disagree with this sentiment suggested in her 2008 hit single ‘Sweet About Me’. From where we’re standing the 18 year old Australian songstress is pure saccharine. Her soothing Jazz/Soul vocal has earned her gigs alongside Rufus Wainwright and Nouvelle Vogue. Her voice is phenomenal, sultry at times and occasionally feisty. Comparisons to Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse are testament to the ability of Cilmi.

Irish Village, Thursday, 17:00 www.myspace.com/thedirtyskirts

Hailing from Cape Town, this energetic quartet splice indie rock guitars with electro synths, beats and samples. Their live show is as fuelled up as an angry Saturday night lager boy. Ironically their debut album is

entitled ‘On A Stellar Bender’ and equally as amusing is the title of the first single ‘Homewrecker’. Renowned in their native South Africa for the meanest live show around, they brim with raw animal power and an effervescent love for music and what they do.

Sound of Guns

The Automatic

Irish Village, Friday, 18:00 www.myspace.com/theautomatic

This raucous electro-punk quartet is renowned for the screeching backing vocals on their debut album ‘Not Accepted Anywhere’. A bit like Marmite, the high pitched accompanying squeals had critics divided at first but such divisions were quelled as The Automatic began to build a legion of devotees. Their single ‘monster’ is a terrace shanty like anthem that gained the band instant notoriety.

Skank Sinatra

Irish Village, Friday, 16:40 www.myspace.com/skanksinatras

Skank Sinatra is composed of four delegates of varying home-countries and religions taking musical direction from a gorilla, a London gorilla at that. Draped in mystique before you ever hear a track, they’ve got you hooked by sounding insane, in a good “eclectic” way of course. And so it goes that the Chilean, Arab, Englishman, and Jesus Freak under the guidance of Head Primate concoct some tasty electronic stew with a spectrum of musical elements sampled from electro to breaks, and trip-hop, with acoustic guitars and soulful vocals (no mere sampling here), this five mammalian team is on the warpath. Its time to go apeshit, or bananas, or any other simian cliché worthy of some damn good music!.

Irish Village, Thursday, 16:40Festival City, Friday, 23:00 www.myspace.com/soundofguns

One of the biggest sounds to emerge from Liverpool in the last decade, Sound of Guns make rock music capable of filling vast galaxies. Lead

singer Andy Metcalf’s voice is classic rock with a soulful depth that can pull off massive anthems like ‘Architects’ with a bag full of gusto. Something feels right when you hear Sound of Guns play live, they have a chemistry on stage that can’t be bought, the five members seem almost destined to play together. The sheer power of the live set will blow you away, marauding drums, meaty guitar riffs and lyrics belted out louder than a home crowd goal celebration, all go to making Sound of Guns one of the hottest prospects in music.

Bicycle Thieves

The Parlotones

Irish Village, Saturday, 16:40 www.myspace.com/theparlotones

The biggest selling band in South Africa, The Parlotones are currently on a worldwide tour that culminates with them being the first ever South African band to headline the prestigious Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg. To give you an idea of the sound, they’re influenced by the likes of Muse, Radiohead and The Smiths so they can’t go wrong as far as we’re concerned. Lead singer Kahn Morbee’s unique voice is the focal point of their darkly romantic anthems.

We Have Band

Irish Village, Friday, 15:20Alpha, Friday, 01:00 www.myspace.com/wehaveband

Currently stomping their way through a mammoth world tour, this sprightly London threesome are one of the hottest prospects in British music right now. Combining electro, punk-rock and pop, they make records that result in body popping and gyrating galore. They are currently recording their debut album with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, and These New Puritans). Their musical style draws comparisons to The Human League, Metronomy and !!!(ChkChkChk) and we think they’re destined for big things.

Irish Village, Saturday, 15:20Festival City, Friday, 21:45 www.myspace.com/bicyclethievesuk

When it comes to dark, dramatic, yet soulful music, Liverpool seems to be somewhat of a breeding ground. Cloaked in a heavy overcoat of brooding ambience, Bicycle Thieves sound can move from melancholy to epic in a matter of seconds. It’s only a matter of time before this bands success matches the volume of their tundra of gloom-rock. Their track ‘Eggshells’ jolts along on punchy drums and lyrics slurred out with the rhythm of a drunken druid chant.

Tim Hassall & August Company

Dan Black

Irish Village, Saturday, 15:20 www.myspace.com/danblacksound

Last year Black was the most hyped artist on the net, his name was plastered around the music blogosphere, spreading like wild-fire. His track ‘Hypntz’ mixed Rihanna and Notorious B.I.G samples to a unique sound. On the back of the whirlwind of hype, Black has dropped his debut LP entitled ‘Un’. Innovative drum programming, chopped up synths, filthy basslines and electronic bleeps, bloops and blips. It’s hard to pin Black down, he certainly can’t be stereotyped, his innovative production style and jaunty vocal are the stuff of genius. Black played the John Peel tent at Glastonbury this year, which is testament to the esteem in which he currently held.

Wave Machines

Irish Village, Friday, 14:20Festival City, Saturday, 21:45 www.myspace.com/mywavemachine

One of the most exciting bands out of Liverpool right now, the masked

quartet drop an infectious mix of electro-pop, funk and rock. The live show is packed tighter than a fat man in spandex with fun and energy and the musicianship is fantastic. They play so comfortably together – it’s clear to see why they have played big name festivals over the summer and have an extensive tour lined up. To mention a band in the same sentence as Hot Chip and The Beta Band obviously shows that Wave Machines are doing something right; they excel at what they do, employ an eclectic outlook and sound different to their peers.

Irish Village, Thursday, 14:20 www.myspace.com/timhassallmusic

Like the band’s hometown of Dubai, the music of Tim Hassall and The August Company is a glorious clash of styles. With a sound that fuses rock n’ roll, blues, reggae, experimental, folk and dance, they

craft rhythms and melodies that you can’t help but sing-along and move to. Collating these influences they create an incredible live performance and atmosphere through funk guitar, captivating harp solos, honky-tonk keys and inspired vocals. Having developed a strong local following and a secure place in the Dubai music scene, this is definitely one band to say “I was there in 2009…” .

Post War Years

Irish Village, Saturday, 14:20 www.myspace.com/thempostwaryears

Easily the best thing to come out of Royal Lemington Spa in well…forever. Post War Years serve up fresh and tasty electro treats with a twist. Their intelligent, warped approach results in a surreal listening experience and a highly unique sound. Innovation is not a direct substitute for groove, oh no – they butter their tracks with a thick layer of funk to get body’s moving on the dance floor. With three members of the band regularly switching instruments and lead vocal duties, as well as performing intricate harmonies, Post War Years have naturally evolved into something more like a living organism rather than just an outcome of the sum of their parts.

The Meerkats

Irish Village, Saturday, 13:40 www.myspace.com/meerkatsmusic

The Meerkats were conceived on a dance floor of Official Dubai Sound City hotspot Chi, in August last year. If only there was a crystal ball to have seen what was about to happen. One year after their debut on ‘Dubai Open Mic’ Radio Show, The Meerkats have played to sell out crowds at all of the major venues in Dubai. They have supported the Charlatans, Deep Purple and Arrested Development and closed the Rugby World Cup 7’s Tournament. With their new EP due out in December 2009, expect “arms in the air, cheerful Melodies, with thoughtful lyrics on love, loss and heartache” according to TimeOut Dubai.

Evergreen

Irish Village, Thursday, 13:00Festival City, Friday, 19:10 www.myspace.com/evergreenindia

In the early part of the Evergreen’s 10 year history, they were influenced by Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rush, Dream Theater, and were known for their near perfect covers. Evergreen grew from a commercial/ corporate circuit to the rockers they are today. They gave special attention to selecting their own equipment, with the emphasis on creating a sound of their own. Their first album ‘Between and Beyond’ was an important milestone, announcing the arrival of Evergreen into the mainstream,. Many sold out concerts later, Evergreen witnessed a coming of age of the Indian rock audience, culminating in the release of the music video ‘From Here to Clarity’ on VH1.

The Recipe

Irish Village, Saturday, 13:00 www.facebook.com/therecipe

Frustrated by the lack of unity and attention devoted to hip-hop culture here in the Middle East, the MC/Producers, Jabbar and Swerte, decided the form The Recipe in early 2009. Featuring no less than 6 MCs, 1 DJ and 1 human beatboxer at all times, their mission is to push local talent in the U.A.E. and then gradually spread their influence throughout the Middle East. Their first mixtape launch was a success in early October, and more events, tours, community workshops and even a record label launch will be announced in the next 6 months.

There are not many bands or groups that can claim to be Dubai’s best-kept secret, welcome to the world of Jaxxma. Rone Jaxx and Majician are the complete package. Both rappers, MCs and Producers, they are collectively known as Jaxxma. Forming in 2000, these individuals gained enormous respect on the bubbling underground scene in Dubai. Believing in freedom of music but without causing offense, Jaxxma quickly garnered a following of like-minded urban individuals. Their forthcoming EP takes you on a journey from R&B, to hip-hop and even a dose of the contagious single ‘Nach Kuriya’, a Drum & Bass track with a classic sample from a Bhangra tune.

Ladytron are an endless kaleidoscope of styles, they look like a band of Goths from the year 3000 and sound like the mutant love child of Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Blondie and Britney Spears. Not to mention

they are made up of Reuban Wu and Daniel Hunt from Liverpool, Helen Marnie from Glasgow and Mira Aroyo from Sofia, Bulgaria. Effortlessly innovative, they have been breaking musical boundaries since their beginnings in 1998. They recorded their first UK single ‘He Took Her To A Movie’ with a measly budget of 50 quid and chose to play their debut shot at a Paris bowling alley. Since then their popularity has soared and they have released six albums.

Ezra Bang and Hot Machine will smash you in the face with their self-titled ‘Guerrilla Funk’. Sounding like a modern day Public Enemy on steroids, their live show is a spectacle to behold. They mash up samples, drum machines and synthesisers to create a hip hop/punk hybrid. Live shows are likely to result in multiple cases of crowd whiplash from incessant head nodding. Enigmatic lead vocalist Ezra spits venomous yet socially conscious lyrics over synth-charged guttural beats. Aggressive, energy charged and down to rock, they will knock the living daylights out of anything in their path.

Layo & Bushwacka!

Chi, Friday, 01:00 www.myspace.com/olmetorecords

Layo & Bushwacka! are one of electronic music’s most esteemed duos. Comprising of Matthew ‘Bushwacka’ B and Layo Paskin, the duo met through mutual friend Mr.C and by the mid 90s had started writing music together. Over a decade later, three artist albums have proven them remarkably talented producers, capable of mixing styles, tempos and genres to create enduring and engaging electronic music. Their trio of mix albums and international club residencies have shown they are masters of the turntables, sonic connoisseurs who can guide a dance floor on an epic journey through the many facets of their sound. Their label Olmeto meanwhile has become a bastion for quality, a label that, much like its figureheads, has become a rubber stamped seal of class.

Bloc Party

DJ, Chi, Friday, 01:00 www.myspace.com/blocparty

Bloc Party are a band that needs no introduction. But we will. DJing in Chi on Friday, we ask ourselves will we see the bands that inspired them to become musicians in the first place, the likes of Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Gang of Four, and the Cure or a few cheeky tracks from their own 3 massive albums? East London art punkers Bloc Party mix angular sonics with pop structures in their own tracks so their DJset will be nothing, if not an interesting mix. Consisting of singer/guitarist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist/singer Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong, the band definitely know a thing or two about the music.

Knocking out electro indie anthems like ‘Trash’ and killing Glastonbury stages alongside Erol Alkan and Crookers is just what this Mancunian quartet do. They whipped up a near frenzy of hype when their

2007 release ‘Divebomb’ came out on kitsch French record label Kitsune, featuring a b-side remix by indie-rave trendsetters Crystal Castles. Since then they have released their critically acclaimed debut LP ‘X Marks Destination’ that’s floats on their passion for music and pulsates with idiosyncratic energy.

From the sounds of Bambaata to Man Parrish and from Kraftwerk to Captain Rock he was hooked. That early B Boy culture and street music still remain strong in Mach4’s veins to this day and just flicking through his ipod is like a trip down memory lane through Drum n Bass, Jungle, Breakbeat, Rave, Hip Hop and beyond.... Mach4 has been responsible for some other key clubbing moments in the UAE and has DJ’d extensively across the region and in the UK.

360º was voted 58th Best Club in the World by DJ Mag for 2009 – and you can see why it made such a prestigious list. Set out in the middle of the Gulf, this beacon of cool draws the city’s chic set onto its tequila-salted shores with the prospect of eyeing night time Dubai from the stylish rooftop terrace. 360º resident, Mr Mr, says the great thing about the club is that you “combine cutting edge music & DJs, FunKtion One sound, a warm ocean breeze, a starry sky, the Dubai coastline, close up views of the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel, then surround yourself with water and waves- no where else in the world quite like it- It’s my home from home!”

The Apartment

Location: Jumeirah Beach Hotel www.jumeirah.com

Voted for the world’s best bars on the popular website, worldsbestbars.com, the Apartment is an elegant and opulent French restaurant-bar in a basement apartment of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. But like everything else in Dubai, it’s also much more than that. The cavernous space includes a library, a vast wine cellar, a cigar lounge, and a nightclub – which has hosted the likes of DJ Jazzy B, and Grandmaster Flash.

Location: Le Meridien www.alphaclub.ae

With the music loud enough to blow your mind with ‘the best sound system in Dubai’; the mighty Funktion 1, Time Out awarded Alpha favourite nightclub in Dubai gong in 2008. They said : “Hosting

everything from funk nights to acclaimed live indie bands, the boys and girls at Alpha have turned it into the leader of the pack...with one of the best music policies in town” We couldn’t agree more. Artists such as Ms Dynamite, the Automatic and DJs like Roni Size, and Spiritcatcher illustrate that Alpha celebrates its eclectism on a weekly basis.

Chi is one of the oldest establishments in the city – it underwent a massive refurbishment a couple of years ago, and since then has never looked back. It also has a capacity for 3,000 people – making it one ofthe largest clubs in Dubai too. The only place in town with a gargantuan garden area for live events and big-name DJs, devoted hip-hop and indie music rooms, and a large VIP area, this is certainly a club that will suit most people on a musical and social level.

The Warehouse

Location: Le Meridien Garhoud www.lemeridien-dubai.com

One of the newest additions to the Dubai nightlife scene, Warehouse has made its name in Dubai as a stylish and sophisticated venue, showcasing a myriad of elements under one roof - a European-style bistro.
