Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates , located within the emirate of the same name. It isone of the seven emirates that make up the country. It has the largest population in the UAE(2,106,177) and the second-largest land territory (4,114 km 2) after the capital, Abu Dhabi .

Today, Dubai has emerged as a cosmopolitan metropolis that has grown steadily to become

a global city and a business and cultural hub of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region. It isalso a major transport hub for passengers and cargo. Although Dubai's economy was historically

built on the oil industry, the emirate's Western-style model of business drives its economy withthe main revenues now coming from tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services. Dubaihas recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects andsports events. The city has become symbolic for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings, such asthe world's tallest Burj Khalifa , in addition to ambitious development projects including man-made islands, hotels, and some of the largest shopping malls in the region and the world. Thisincreased attention has also highlighted labour and human rights issues concerning the city'slargely South Asian workforce. Dubai's property market experienced a major deterioration in2008 2009 following the financial crisis of 2007-2008, but is making a gradual recovery withhelp coming from neighbouring emirates especially Abu Dhabi.

As of 2012, Dubai is the 22nd most expensive city in the world, and the most expensive city inthe Middle East. Dubai has also been rated as one of the best places to live in the Middle East.

What must be known to first-timers in Dubai?

Driving in Dubai and traffic lawsThe rapid development of Dubais roads and transport network can only work with a system

of rules and regulations. Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority play majorroles in ensuring safety and traffic regulations and use smart technology to ensure trafficviolations are kept to a minimum. A system of black points leading to confiscation of yourdriving license is in force to ensure adherence to traffic laws. In case you have broken thetraffic or parking laws, you can conveniently pay your fines online, but this facility isnormally for minor infringements.

The RTA also advises all motorists to avoid using the road shoulder, except in anemergency. The road shoulder should not be used for taking a rest or using the mobile

phone, since it may block an ambulance or police car. The RTA defines an emergency formotorists as exceptional circumstances such as a vehicle breakdown or medical emergency.

Motorists can be fined AED 600 and given six black points on their license for overtakingon the road shoulder, while parking on the road shoulder without just cause can lead to anAED 200 fine.

To avoid traffic jams and get real-time information about traffic congestion and figure outthe fastest route to your destination, you can use the Dalili Navigation System introduced

by the RTA on various navigation devices. Available at most electronic shops and priced between AED 600 to 2000 (depending on brand and features), the devices analyze all trafficdata in real-time and provide advice on the best route to reach your destination in theshortest time.
