Background

The overall goal of this relatively small contracturaleffort is to provide technical assistance to Dr. FrankPatten (DARPA) in evaluating data on materials, especiallypolymers, that may be useful in the development of opticallimiters for the protection of eyes and electro-opticsensors from exposure to damaging levels of laserradiation. A major task is to assist in the development ofa predictative capability in assessing the viability ofvarious protective approaches and to determine thetheoretical limitations which may exist in the use oforganic materials as optical switches and limiters.

Progress to Date

A search of the literature has been initiated in an attemptto gather into one table the magnitude of the non-linearoptical properties of various organic materials as afunction of molecular structure. The first quarterlytechnical report (March 1989) included a partial list ofreferences being reviewed in order to document reported NLOproperties of a variety of molecules and systems. Attachedas Appendix A to this, the second quarterly report (June1989) is a table of molecules and sysytems with valuesreported for their NLO properties; namely, values ofchi-3. It is anticipated that this table will representthe starting point for a "living document", continuouslyupdated as new molecules are synthesized and propertiesmeasured.

The Principal Investigator attended the Lockheed-Celeneseprogram review held at DARPA headquaters on 26 April.Written comments and suggestions were sent to Dr. Pattenfollowing the review.

At no travel expense to this contract, the PrincipalInvestigator attended the "7th DOD Conference on DEWVulnerabilioty, Survivability and Effects" held inMonterey, CA 9-12 May. Several presentations and postersessions related to eye and sensor protection orvulnerability to laser radiation. Of special note were thetechniques using highly ordered smectic A films developedby Optical Shield, Ltd. and the superheated droplet powerlimiter reported by Science Applications InternationalCorporation. No new or novel materials with large NLOproperties were reported at the conference.

Initial discussions have been held with Mr. Marshal Sparksof BDM Corp. (Los Angeles, CA) and Scientific ResearchCenter, (Playa Del Rey, CA) regarding a possible jointeffort to initiate a theoretical study to predict theultimate limit that may be obtained from an "ideal" NLOpolymer or system used as an optical power limiter. Thesediscussions were initiated at the request of Dr. FrankPatten, DARPA. Further discussions and a site visit arescheduled in the near future.

During the next quarter, tabulation of the NLO propertiesof material will continue and, if agreed to by Dr. Patten,DARPA, and the monitors of this contract, an effort will beinitiated to identify the theoretical limitation to theoptical switching ability of organic molecules andpolymers. This effort would be joint with Mr. Sparks andperhaps others as noted above.

The Principal Investigator is coordinating his activitieswitn the Cnemisrry Division of the Naval ResearchLaboratory in Washington, D. C., in order to avoidduplication of effort and to maximize research efficiency.
