Who imagined the world of Blade Runner?

Who designed the Batmobile?

Who was the architect of Superman’s crystal palace?

Concept Designers collaborate with directors, writers, producers

and actors to make us believe that we are experiencing fantasti-

cal journeys to worlds real or imaginary, whether on the big

screen at the Cineplex or on the small screen of our PlayStation.

Concept Designers create the characters, vehicles, environments

and props that visually elaborate whatever time is at hand. Their

imaginations invent worlds that we ourselves would never dream

possible; their art takes us convincingly to lands of make-believe.

At Design Studio Press we strive to inspire and educate by show-

casing the fascinating field of Concept Design. We feature artists

who have worked on the blockbuster films that continue to enter-

tain and influence: Star Wars–Episodes I, II & III, Blade Runner,

X-Men 2 and 3, War of the Worlds, Alien vs. Predator, Men in

Black I and II, The Matrix Revolutions, The Chronicles of

Narnia, Armageddon, Spider-Man, Superman Returns, The

Polar Express, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, the

Harry Potter series, and many more.

These accomplished artists are also committed to educating the

next generation of entertainment designers. Many teach at

acclaimed Art Center College of Design and have instructed on

educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop. With topics that

include perspective drawing, design development, and rendering

in Photoshop, these step-by-step instructional DVDs are a valu-

able source of artistic education.

We welcome you to the many worlds of Design Studio Press—

with the most unique ideas and images from design concepts of

today…and tomorrow!

“You find yourself drifting when you become aware of the arrangement of treesbehind a freeway sound barrier, when you wait for the container ship to disap-pear beyond the horizon, when you sit and listen to the ambient noise of distanttraffic, unconcerned that most people would consider this a waste of time.”

From the moments described above, emerges a captivating sketchbook fromChristian Schellewald. Art Director Schellewald has taken time away fromthe world of entertainment design to create vignettes that capture his every-day observations of living in California, specifically Los Angeles and SanFrancisco. QUANTUM DREAMS:the art of stephan martinière

“When I grow up I want to be an astronaut!” declared a six-year-old Stephanin 1968, a year before man walked on the moon. Not surprisingly, his first doo-dles featured blazing rockets and spaceships. Growing up in France, and notpermitted to watch much TV, Stephan spent a lot of time at the corner cine-ma. There he was introduced to the likes of the Werewolf, the Mummy,Dracula, Frankenstein and King Kong. He traveled on the Voyage to theCenter of the Earth and experienced The Day the Earth Stood Still. The fan-tastic creatures and worlds in all of these classics were overwhelmingly cool.As Stephan’s doodles of astronauts became doodles of monsters and aliens,he found himself enjoying drawing more and more—and the dream of becom-ing an astronaut gradually evolved into becoming a visual artist.

Quantum Dreams: The Art of Stephan Martinière is a collection of his sci-fi book paintings, video game designs and personal art. Stephan takes oth-ers’ descriptions of faraway, imaginary realms—and makes them real.

WORLDS:a mission of discovery

“...a visual masterpiece....”

“Worlds is more than just an absorbing and, ultimately, heart-wrenching workof fiction, it is a visual masterpiece. Not since Wayne Barlowe's Expeditionhas an artist conceived an alien biosphere in such baroque detail, whileremaining true to nature’s fundamental principles of adaptation, selectionand ecological interdependence. These worlds are intricately conceived, their biomes scientifically plausible, while possessing a sufficient sense ofthe quirky and outrageous to mirror nature’s own outlandish inventiveness.

Worlds is a visual depiction of humankind’s first exploration of life-support-ing planets, shown in a dynamic vérité photographic style and told in a first-person narrative. Created by Academy Award-nominated visual effects artistAlec Gillis, Worlds leads the reader on a journey to undiscovered landscapes, populated by unknown life forms. Worlds is a mission of discovery thatbecomes a struggle for survival, and in the process celebrates humanity’sspirit of exploration.”

AVP: alien vs. predator:the creature effects of a.d.i.

Foreword by Lance Henriksen

In 1979, Ridley Scott introduced moviegoers to a new definition of fear and hor-ror with his sci-fi classic, Alien. To coincide with the release of AVP, specialeffects gurus Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr. opened the doors of theirAcademy Award-winning creature shop, Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. (A.D.I.),to invite all to a behind-the-scenes journey, as they once more breathed life intothe characters that have been scaring audiences for over two decades.

Different from many “making of” books, it focuses exclusively on the creatureeffects of AVP; what it takes to create some of sci-fi's baddest baddies. It fol-lows Gillis and Woodruff and their talented crew of over 100 artists and tech-nicians throughout the design, sculpting, fabrication, and finishing processes. The story continues on location in Prague where, as the cameras roll, theircreations truly come to life.
