Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)Moulded case circuit breaker is mainly used in AC/DC circuits to provide protection for LV distribution line and motor circuit against overload, short-circuit, under-voltage, over-voltage and current leakage. Under normal operating condition, it can be also used for infrequent transformation of line and infrequent starting of motor. The regular AC products have a rated voltage up to 690V and rated current up to 1600A, which is suitable for large-sized buildings and industrial conditions.
Major standards followed: IEC 60947-2.
DSM: MCCB solution market leader DSM has been the leader to substitute thermosetting materials in MCCB for more than a decade. At present, adoption of thermoplastic material in new MCCB has become a consensus throughout the industry. Major driving force is improving product performance and realizing intelligence & miniaturization of products while reducing cost. DSM’s product profi le includes Stanyl Polyamide 46 series, Akulon Polyamide 6 and 66, as well as ForTii and Arnite. DSM’s solutions are used for various housing as well as internal functional assemblies, off ering 100% security and great cost eff ectiveness.
HousingSubstitution of traditional thermosetting housing of MCCB with DSM’s in engineering plastics can reduce wall thickness (decreasing up to 25% material volume) which helps reduce cost by 15%. Moreover, added internal room can accommodate circuit and mechanism with higher current rating, reduce product size, further decrease cost and realize miniaturization. Enhancement of design freedom will promote fulfi llment of integrated intelligent assembly solution. DSM’s materials also off er better security and longer mechanical/electrical lifetime and improve product performance.
Material for MCCB housing must meet requirements of relevant standards, e.g. glow-wire flame retardant test (GWFI 960°C), ball pressure test (BP 125°C), etc. As short-circuit breaking requirement for products is increasingly higher, the materials are required to have better high-temp mechanical property. For diff erent requirements by MCCBs, DSM’s housing material solutions off er a wide range of choices from high-performance Stanyl Polyamide 46 to cost eff ective Akulon Polyamide 66 as well as halogen-free flame retardant polyester PBT.
Internal MechanismFor mechanical operating parts inside MCCB, such as tripping bar, drve shaft and other mechanically operating units using DSM’s engineering plastics to substitute traditional thermosetting materials helps enhance design freedom. In addition, better abrasion performance improves mechanical/electrical lifetime as well as stability of product.
With respect to selection of materials for mechanism, DSM has a very high requirement on high-temp mechanical property, high-temp creep resistance and dimensionally stabile materials in addition to basic requirements as specifi ed in relevant standard. DSM’s product profi le (Akulon, Arnite, Stanyl and ForTii) off ers solution for internal mechanism of MCCB.
Arc Quenching SystemWith constant enhancement of power grid capacity, MCCB is required to have higher short-circuit breaking performance. To achieve high breaking ability in small-sized product requires not only optimized design, but also optimizing the material used in arc quenching system. Especially in miniaturization design, reduced size will have a negative influence on arc breaking. Moreover, free carbon would be produced during breaking, which could cause safety risk.
DSM is happy to advise you on how to improve your arc quenching performance, based on its portfolio and design recommendations.

Recommended application of DSM products in MCB housing (Curve C)
Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)MCCB is mainly used under a condition with AC 50/60Hz current and up to 690V voltage, for protection of line with rated current up to 160A against overload and short-circuit. It can also be used under normal condition for infrequent transformation of line. The main applications include industrial, commercial, high-rise as well as residential buildings, etc.
Major standards followed are IEC 60898 and IEC 60947-2.
DSM: MCB solution market leader DSM has been the leader to substitute thermosetting materials in MCB in the past decades. Nowadays, most MCBs in the world are manufactured with thermoplastic materials. Major driving force always lies in improving product security and performance while reducing cost.
HousingMaterials for MCB housing must meet some basic testing requirements, e.g. glow-wire flame retardant test (GWFI 960°C), ball pressure test (BP 125°C), etc. With current trend of miniaturization design of product and higher rated voltage of DC products, in order to satisfy required creepage distance in design, relevant requirement has been proposed on comparative tracking index (CTI) for materials. Increasingly stricter short-circuit breaking requirement for circuit breaker also poses requirement on mechanical strength and dielectric strength aft er breaking of materials for housing. Production units’ requirement for higher production effi ciency demands further improvement of machinability and flowing performance of materials. DSM’s Akulon series can off er diff erent material solutions for diff erent MCB products.

Data Description Item Meaning Description
Flame Class Class of flame retardancy Determine flame retardancy class in accordance with UL94.
Flame retardancy class upgrades rises gradually in the sequence of HB < V-2 < V-1 < V-0.
As a higher 5V appraisal. Different from traditional method.
Flame retardancy class upgrades rises gradually in the sequence of V-0 < 5VB < 5VA.
So, for example, “V-0, 5VA” means two tests are conducted.
HWI Hot wire ignition class Wind nickel wire onto test piece to allow specified current to pass.
Classify material flame retardancy as per time required for ignition.
The lower the class number, the higher the flame retardancy.
0: >= 120 s; 1: 60~120 s; 2: 30~60 s;
3: 15~30 s; 4: 7~15 s; 5: <7 s
HAI High current arc ignition class Allow high current arc to fly besides the test piece. Classify material flame
retardancy as per the number of times required until ignition. The lower the
class number, the higher the difficulty of material.
0: >= 120 times; 1: 60~120 times; 2: 30~60 times;
3: 15~30 times; 4: <15 times
RTI Relative temperature index Maximum temperature to guarantee usage of material as specified by UL. Unit: °C.
• Elec stands for RTI for electrical property;
• Imp stands for RTI in the case of impact load;
• Str stands for RTI under static load
Color Color All above 4 indicators (Flame Class, HWI, HAI, RTI) are relevant to color;
different colors of materials will cause different performances
NC means natural color (without coloration); BK means black color; ALL means
any color, etc.
Min. Thick. Min. thickness of test piece All above 4 indicators (Flame Class, HWI, HAI, RTI) are relevant to thickness of
test piece; different thickness will cause different performance. Unit: mm
CTI Comparative Tracking Index Leakage resistance is classified as per voltage resistance value from 0 to 5.
The lower the class number, the higher the leakage resistance.
0: ≥ 600 V; 1: 400~600 V; 2: 250~400 V;
3: 175~250 V; 4: 100~175 V; 5: < 100 V
IPT Inclined plane tracking Another performance to evaluate leakage resistance of material. It is often
used in HV condition.
HVTR High voltage arc tracking rate Distance that the tracking travels within a unit of time. The lower the class
number, the slower the travelling speed.
0: 0~10 mm/min; 1: 10~25.5 mm/min; 2: 25.5~80 mm/min
3: 80~150 mm/min; 4: > 150 mm/min
D495 ASTM-D495 arc resistance Arc resistance standard established by ASTM. The lower the class number,
the higher the arc resistance.
0: >= 420 s; 1: 360~420 s; 2: 300~360 s
3: 240~300 s; 4: 180~240 s; 5: 120~180 s
6: 60~120 s; 7: < 60 s
