VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON Te Whare Wananga o te Upoko o te Ika a Maui School of Design Te Kura Hoahoa DSDN144: Digital Photographics TRIMESTER 1/2010 Project 3 – Merge Digital technology has revolutionised photography. It has given us the capability to radically change the way that the world is represented. Pixels can be warped and repositioned to create not only a simulation of a photograph but also an alternative “reality". In this assignment you will create your own alternative realities through the merging of elements to ask “what if?” Your choice of contexts is immense: cultural, social, political, environmental, historical, scientific, literary, etc. As in the first assignment, you must produce a coherent series, in this instance comprising of at least four images. During this project advanced digital manipulation skills will be introduced along with more sophisticated shooting and exposure techniques. Attention will shift from existing situations to constructing photographic images and meanings completely of your own making. Whilst you may incorporate some appropriated imagery into your work, the most significant amount must be your own. Final presentation format must be considered to relate to your concept and must be confirmed with your tutor well in advance to the in-class review. For example, you may choose to present printed work or show your images as part of a website. By the second studio session of the project you need to submit a proposal outlining your concept and how you are planning on approaching it. The proposal should consist of a referenced paragraph (200 - 300 words) and include some precedent images and either a storyboard or mock up shots. Save the document with the text + images as a word file or a PDF in your R:/drive Pro3 folder. Don’t forget to include your name in the document. KEYWORDS: manipulation, superimposition, simulation, speculation, deception, interpretation, modification, transformation, fabrication, distortion, adaptation, artifice, narrative, fiction(s), intangibility, morph, montage, engineering, digital/virtual space, context, questioning READINGS: Clarke, Graham. TRIMESTER 1/2010

Project 3 – Merge

Digital technology has revolutionised photography.

STUDENT SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In this assignment you will create your own alternative realities through the merging of opposites; the real and unreal, the true and the false, the prosaic and the extraordinary, the hideous and the beautiful, etc. As in the first assignment, you must produce a coherent series, in this instance comprising of at least four images.

During this project advanced digital manipulation skills will be introduced along with more sophisticated shooting and exposure techniques. Attention will shift from existing situations to constructing photographic images and meaning completely of your own making. Whilst you may incorporate some appropriated imagery into your work, the most significant proportion must be your own.
