Forensic Anthropology: Investigating the Scene
BackgroundBefore investigating the scene, you need to know what the bones are called.
Activity1. Each group has a “shallow grave” to investigate. Send 1-2 investigators from your group (with gloves
on) to investigate the scene. Their job is to uncover the bones and place the crime scene markers next to each of the uncovered bones.
2. Send a photographer to photograph the scene. Send your photograph to Ms. Reed to print out and paste in the space below:
3. Send a different set of investigators to your group’s “shallow grave.” Sketch the placement of the bones, including the crime scene markers next to the bones in the space below:
Remove as much soil as possible from the bones and take the bones to your table. Complete the chart below:Crime Scene # Name of Bone Length of bone Width of bone Other characteristics
Analysis1. What could these bones reveal about the victim?
2. What other evidence could have been collected at the scene besides the bones? What could that evidence reveal?
