PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Happy February! I can’t believe that we are half way through
our school year! In February we take time to recognize staff
and their efforts to support students and school community.
They demonstrate daily their commitment to provide the best
experience for your children in their early years of learning. I
continue to be proud of all of the staff at our school and
appreciate all they do every day. They all play a unique and
important role in the day to day learning of your child and
continue to promote a safe and caring learning environment
for all students. Staff Appreciation Week is February 10-14th!
In partnership with The County of Kings, we will be hosting an
Open Gym Night on Thursday evenings from 6-7pm
(except the dates of Feb. 20, Mar 19 and Apr.9). Our school

individuals for donations to our Breakfast/Lunch Club; just to
name a few: Southwest Nova Insurance, MacLeod Lorway,
Franchise Management Inc., Valley Credit Union (Cambridge
Branch), The Kinsmen Club of Kentville, and the Berwick and
District Inter-faith Outreach Society. Your support is greatly
appreciated!
We will be welcoming our new primaries this month. Primary
Registration takes place over two days, Feb. 24th
and 25th
.
There will be no school for the Primary or Pre-Primary
students on these two days. If you know of any families in our
area with school-age children it would be helpful if you would
tell them about registration and suggest they contact the
school.

CAFETERIA NEWS
We are very excited to announce that we have successfully received a grant from the Wolfville Rotary Club to purchase our new Salad Bar. Coldbrook & District School staff and students are making a conscious effort to “Go Green” and provide students with a healthy lunch. We have also purchased serving trays and reusable cutlery. These two new items will help reduce the amount of plastic that is harmful to our environment.
These new items will not be allowed to be removed from the cafeteria. If your child needs a spoon, fork, or knife, please send these in their lunch with them. We are doing our best to show our students how to help the environment as they are our future!
COACH’S CORNER
Coldbrook School would love to have coaches volunteer for badminton (March-April), boys and girls softball (May-June), and track and field (April-May). If you know of someone willing to coach, please pass the name along to the school or to Mr. Spear at [email protected].
The boys and girls basketball seasons are winding down with playoffs on the horizon. Best of luck on the court, Cougars!
Middle-Level hockey is midway through their season, best of luck on the ice the rest of the way!

20K SOCK DAY UPDATE
We are still collecting socks for 20K Sock Day! This is an annual event where socks are collected to donate to homeless shelters. The goal is to donate 50,000 pairs of socks to shelters and similar organizations across Canada!
A donation box for socks is set up in our lobby.
Between Jan 6 and Feb 21, our school has the opportunity to 'give back' by collecting 'some' of the 20k socks they hope to collect.
We’re asking for donations of socks and a tally of the number of pairs of socks donated will be kept by each classroom.
The class with the highest number donated will receive a reward at the end of February!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
A Virtue is a positive trait or quality deemed to be morally good; it is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being. All children
are born with the virtues in potential; when parents and educators awaken and embrace these gifts of character, we can change the world.
(thevirtuesproject.com)
Key aspects of sociability are derived from skills that help children understand and express feelings and behaviors in ways that facilitate
positive relationships. These aspects include: Self-regulation, Active listening, Cooperation, Effective communication. While we know that
some children are more naturally extroverted or introverted than others, all children can learn the social skills for working together to
build relationships necessary for human thriving.
What role does sociability play in your child’s life? According to studies on the social nature of how we acquire knowledge, one answer is
clear: Children engage in learning through their cooperative capacity to interact with others. We often call this sociability and friendliness,
and we recognize it in children when we observe their enjoyment of being together -- chatting, joking, laughing, working, and creating
friendships. It is through these interactions that kids make the invisible visible, cross boundaries into new spheres of learning, and initiate
thoughts and feelings that help them chart pathways through life.
The benefits of sociability and its related social-emotional skills are developed in children through relational experiences both inside and
outside of the classroom. Through Empathy, Curiosity, Sociability, Resilience, Self-Awareness, Integrity, Resourcefulness, and Creativity
children are building their social-emotional skills.
Strategies That Foster Sociability and Social Learning
1. Teach social skills early- One of the most effective strategies to teach social skills in elementary children is to create a common social
language that becomes part of their culture. This language contains familiar, understandable ways to communicate with others, including
how to listen, show gratitude, or apologize.
2. Create shared social norms-Sociability is increased when students learn to cooperate with each other. Students come to own the belief
that cooperation is the right way to behave. The Morning Meeting has shown excellent success as a place for students to reflect on what
kind of classroom would best support their learning.
3. Engage students in cooperative learning- When there is joint ownership of an outcome, children learn to work together in small groups;
they learn better and retain knowledge longer. Cooperative learning, also known as collaborative learning, involves working together with
peers toward a common goal. Students must cooperate to complete the assignment, they are each held accountable for the final outcome;
they help each other learn. When children learn in these kinds of supportive, relational groups, they not only learn better, they develop
sociability and social skills that strengthen their relationships and prepare them for successful careers. (Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD)
“None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonder-
ful." – (Mother Teresa)
Reminder: Counselling services are provided in the following manner: whole class presentations, small group work, and 1/1 individual
support. Whole class presentations continue with the 2ND Step program for grades 3-6. These presentations entail skills for social and
academic success through activities and discussions. These lessons happen once a week. Social groups have been formed and 1/1
counselling continues for students who require individual support.
If you have concerns about your child you can reach me through the school at 902 690 3830 or email [email protected]
