Hello fellow members of the
OACBS. Even though the
season has drawn to a close,
our minds can still go back to
the warm days of summer as
we recall our time on the water.
We hope this issue will remind
you of some of those good
times.
Since our last issue of the
“Dry Dock”, we have had two board meet-
ings, a “Steamfest” event in Penticton in
September and the Mahogany & Merlot
show on Lake Chelan, WA. in October.
Here is a quick summary of some of the
board minutes in the last few months:
We have donated about $1000.00
worth of small punts and a skiff to the
Sicamous Society for them to use in
their boat repair shop.
The winner of the
50/50 draw at our boat
show donated his win-
nings back to the club
and OACBS in turn do-
nated it to the youth pro-
grams at ACBS.
ACBS has announced
a $5.00 increase in mem-
bership dues; the first in
many years. When joining this year, it
will be $75.00 US in total, $50.00 for
ACBS and $25.00 for OACBS.
The Sicamous boat show dates will be
back to August 7-9, 2015. Mark your
diaries!!
Our bank balance is in the mid 4 figure
range.
Our membership is growing and we now
have 42 members

We would love to have more volunteers to serve
as directors. Let us know when you are ready.
Our next meeting is January 29th and all are wel-
come.
The Steamfest event was held in conjunction with
the SS Sicamous Heritage Park Society. Jim Cooper, a
member of our OACBS board, is the President of that
society and he arranged for us to have a full tour of
“Tug #6” that is tied up near the SS Sicamous and is
undergoing restoration work. It will be a wonderful
part of the marine heritage of the Okanagan.

I received a mailing from a fellow ACBS member,
Alan Goodwright, who is a member of the Manotick,
E.Ont chapter. He has produced a calendar of his own
drawings and was asked by his chapter members to
tell other ACBS folks about it. I thought the best way
was to show you a few of the drawings. It was fun to
put an OACBS twist on the ones I selected.

I know we never think of the cost of our hobby but
just to keep it in perspective; how about the following
costs at Porto Montenegro, a marina for the rich &
famous in Montenegro. It was developed by Peter
Munk of Barrick Gold fame.
Daily Mooring cost for 50 Meter Yacht - 697 Eu-
ros (Approx $1,100.00 Cdn)
Daily mooring for 100+ meter yacht - 2,298 Eu-
ros
Cost to fill with diesel for 30 to 100 meters -
25,000 to 50,000 Euros
Cost to fill one of the super big ones - approx
200,000 Euros
They have room for 250 super yachts with plans to
go to 850. The longest they can handle is 180 me-
ters. Darn, we will just have to scale back on our new
plans!!!
I am writing this on November 28th and “Route 66”
was just winterized one week ago. No, we were not on
the water but she ran wonderfully in the driveway,
hooked up to the hose. Just a little behind time in
getting things done. We now look forward to some
skiing and other winter activities.
As you know, we have moved the date of our AGM to
coincide with the boating season. We therefore will
not be seeing you all before Christmas this year. Reta
and I want to wish you all the very best for Christmas
and the coming New Year. May you enjoy peace, good
family times and good health.
With the warmest of thoughts.

I'm a mechanical engineer, currently involved in plas-
tics manufacturing. I also spent about 8 years with
Harbercraft in operations management and product
development - everything from little jet boats to the
first 32 ft offshore model.
I have two daughters, Rachel and Sarah, who live in
Saskatoon. I'm also into old motorcycles and have
restored a few.
I bought my boat “Woody” in
about 2003 from Jim Nixon of
the Eldorado Hotel in Kelowna.
He was one of 3 "sister" ships
purchased for a short lived
rental fleet, and the only one still
seaworthy. It's an Aristocraft
Torpedo 14, with a rebuilt 2001
40 Mercury with speed prop and
trim.
We did a bottom up restoration on the hull, which is mahogany ply-
wood and can be carried by two people. Many hours of epoxy later... I
did everything but the final clear coat, over about a year.
The hull is a variable dead-rise, about 5 degrees at the stern. It will do
about 55 mph flat out, but still turns like a race horse when trimmed
in. It doesn't like wakeboard boat wakes, though we used to jump
them.

OACBS members helped make the 2014 Mahogany and Merlot Boat Show in Lake Chelan a big success. The Dickson`s, Mid-
dleton`s, Casparis`s, Williamson`s, and Cooper`s joined a total of 39 vintage watercraft, 5 unlimited hydroplanes, 15 limited
hydro`s and 10 concourse cars, on a beautiful first weekend of October in Lake Chelan.
This is a relatively new event on the boat show calendar
and is a lot of fun. It`s also the closest boat show other
than our own for Okanagan members. In fact, it`s actually
closer for me! Lake Chelan is an easy 2 hour drive south of
the border on highway 97. The lake is 50.5 miles long, the
largest natural lake in Washington and the 3rd deepest lake
in the US at 1486 ft deep; although the surface of the lake
is 1098 ft above sea level, at places the bottom of the lake
is below sea level. The moral of this story is that, while you
may forget to turn on your batteries responsible for your
bilge pump whilst at the dock you definitely do not want to
do so when in the middle of the lake! However, if it does
sink at the dock, the clarity of the water is such that you
will have no problem finding it 25 feet down!
The town of Chelan is small, population about 4000 but is a tourist destination only a 3 hour drive from Seattle so the choices
of accommodation, restaurants and shopping are excellent and everything is a short walk away.
On the Friday evening after getting boats in the
water there was an awesome potluck dinner in the
parking area/vendor display area as well a beer
garden. The food was delicious and it was a great
opportunity to meet up with friends and make new
ones.
The show on Saturday was pretty much a static
show other than about an hour where the boats
were able to get out and parade about in front of
the marina. The reason for this was simple….a
plethora of up to 3000 horsepower, 12 cylinder
Rolls Royce Merlin powered MONSTERS ripping
and snorting around the lake at about 150 mph!
Yes, this is what makes the Lake Chelan event
different, the ability to watch, listen and smell
these piston driven vintage hydroplanes from the

glory years of racing. For the most part these rac-
ing boats were extremely well restored (or rebuilt)
and maintained by large crews of motorheads and
they were able to reliably complete multiple runs
on the oval course set up on the lake. Although
they don`t run full out, they don`t lollygag around
the course either and were hitting speeds of 150
mph down the back straight. Wow, way cool!
The launching and docking facilities are top
notch, attendance on the docks was good
(especially considering it`s October, there were
some nice static displays, and hotels, stores, and,
most importantly, Starbucks are convenient
enough that you do not have to get into your vehi-
cle again after you launch your boat.
All in all I would highly recommend the Ma-
hogany and Merlot show at Lake Chelan as
a great wind up to the boating season and
we hope to see a few more OACBS members
there next year.

We would like to take the opportunity to share a few thoughts about the recent international ACBS show in Skaneateles NY.
This is the second international show we have attended and we plan on
making this an annual event. We first of all find the timing of these shows,
in mid to late Sept, to be perfect as our boating and summer season is
coming to an end. The weather in up state New York was excellent. We
came in early and had a chance to visit a fairly large area of up state NY
including taking in the boat museum in Clayton NY. This was a truly wonder-
ful experience with over 200 boats in static as well as on water display.
There are some very rare and special pieces of our hobby in that facility, if
you ever get close its well worth the trip.
We slowly worked our way to the show taking in the
sights and sounds of this very pretty region.
Once at the show we found a very friendly and well
organized group of woody boaters including people
we met last year in Coeur d'Alene. This event was very
well run at a facility that was, as the boys from Woody
Boater called it, boaters heaven. One hundred or so
boats of incredible pedigree were there, including the
likes of Miss America IX. The quality of the boats at
the international shows are exceptional with many
first time showings, you can smell, and in many cases, feel the
fresh varnish.
We attended the Opening reception, the Scholarship Dinner
and Auction as well as the final nights Awards Banquet. The
food and service of all three was top notch.
We would strongly encourage any one who has not experienced an
international show to put it on your to do list, you will not be disap-
pointed .

Hi Guys!
We had our last ride on October 26th and off to storage the
boat went.
To shake off the blues we had a planning meeting for next
year's Sandpoint Boat Show. We outlined what promises to
be a fun agenda and the dates are July 10-11-12, 2015.
Once we let the "Genie out of the bottle" we will get back to
you with the fun details.
All The Best

The Sandpoint Show is a lot of fun!

Want to get back to boating as soon as possible? Consider attending the Sunnyland Boat Festival in Florida in March 2015.
This year they are celebrating the 60 Year Anniversary of the Chris-Craft Cobra, and it is going to be a great event.
Paul and Karen Harrison have attended this show for several years now and are very familiar with the area and the events.
One of the main highlights is the St. Johns River Cruise. You don’t need to have your boat down there to join in on the fun as
you can cruise the waterways with other ACBS members. It is a great way to enjoy the area get to know other people in the
hobby.
If you would like more information please go to the Sunnyland website at http://www.acbs-sunnyland.org/ and click on the
“Boat Festival” section. Or you can also contact Paul Harrison directly at [email protected].
Here are some photos that the Harrison’s took at the events leading up to, during and after the Sunnyland show:
