Tilo Weber is a drummer, but that statement might be misleading because he’s also much more than that! While other drummers manifest themselves through their own physicality, Weber constantly seeks to explore the space in between: the untold that reveals itself between two sounds or beats. Amongst drummers, this is a rare gift, which makes Tilo Weber a much sought-after accompanist for young rising stars such as pianist Clara Haberkamp or vibraphonist Simon Kanzler. However short a time he might have spent as an active musician on the European jazz scene, he has already shown great confidence and ability in choosing his preferred methods of self-expression.

Weber can also be perceived – and this, to a striking degree – when he’s silent, a feat which, in that intensity, has only previously been accomplished by Paul Motian. In his performance, Weber insists on engaging with his band members rather than being preoccupied with himself. That’s why his presence is gargantuan, his individual energy potential making him the gravitational centre of every band he plays in.

Of course, this ability also predestines him to be a band leader himself. Weber is inherently calm: making rash decisions is not in the nature of this young stoic. That’s why he also didn’t rush the release of his project “Animate Repose” until each and every element was in the right place. In saxophonist Otis Sandsjö, pianist Lucas Leidinger, keyboardist Liz Kosack, guitarist Beat Keller and bassist Oliver Potratz as well as guest players Clara Haberkamp (piano) and Andreas Lang (bass) he has found a squad of like- minded musicians to surround himself with.

These musicians, just like him, are solidly grounded in the youngest branch of the Berlin jazz scene, which is partly described by the KIM Collective. Even though “Animate Repose” unmistakably carries Weber’s signature, it also bears testimony to the “State of the Union” heading a future music scene where a new generation of musicians defiantly stand up to the established jazz routine, with Tilo Weber as their epicentre.

“Animate Repose” represents the drive to explore new horizons at the same time as the desire to persist in the present moment. It declares inaction as a counterpoint to acceleration, but also movement as a contrast to mental rigidity. Weber and his peers are constantly at two places at once. Their music covers a wide spectrum of jazz and improvisation styles, but also extends to the borders of rock, pop, ambient and new music. All of this is joined together by a hint of romantic extremism – not in the fashion of a melancholic transfiguration of reality, but rather in the sense of a defiant mystification of everyday life. Apart from that, the compositions are connected by the underlying principle that energy manifests itself through consolidation.

When composing music, Weber quite often works at the piano, although he holds a stronger preference for the bass, an instrument which he feels more comfortable with and which probably better suits his sense of tempo.

However, even as a drummer, he puts a strong emphasis on melody: he went to the studio with compositions that were completely finished, except for the drum parts, which he hadn’t yet started to write, simply because he wanted to mellow out with his friends. This absolute liberty to be spontaneous within a precisely predetermined context leads to a level of structured recklessness which is rarely found with such displays of consistency. Hard to believe that this musical world changer is still at the beginning of his career, because in his creative moment, centuries seem to be culminating.
