This master class will be broken up into two sections. Section one will focus on what Mike calls “Groove Freedom.” In this portion of the master class, Mike will be breaking down his personal techniques for developing complete freedom inside any groove. Feeling trapped inside a groove is never a good thing, so Mike will show you how to develop the independence required to explore even the most complicated grooves. In the second portion of the class, Mike will focus on drum soloing. An audience can grow bored of listening to the drums by themselves after a few minutes if there is no journey, but a well-told “story” can keep them riveted for the entire solo. Mike will break down “storytelling” techniques such as peaks and valleys, reverse engineering, building your solo to a climax, and the entrance and exit strategy.

Mike Johnston is an American drummer and educator. He currently runs the world's biggest educational website for drummers, Mikeslessons.com, where he o�ers live and pre-recorded drum lessons. He began studying the drums at the age of 5 and spent the next 15 years studying privately with drumming legends Pete Magadini, Steve Ferrone, and Steve Smith.
